Story
Rye is searching for her forever home as the only animal so that she can soak up all the attention from her humans! RYE'S STORY FROM OUR DIRECTOR: Rye was brought up to the DMV Region from a Texas shelter in 2020. I was working for another rescue at the time, running the transport/foster program, and offloaded her myself when she arrived. She fit into the palm of my hand she was so small and only a few weeks old. She was adopted immediately, incorrectly labeled as a chihuahua mix. Unfortunately, 7 months later, her family returned her due to the combination of the pandemic and how "big" she got (she's only 40 lbs but they were expecting an 8 lb Chi-Mix!). Unfortunately from there, Rye was bounced around from foster to foster and boarding facilities until 2021 when the previous rescue felt it was best to euthanize her. I couldn't let that happen so I adopted her with the intention of finding her a home! I renamed her to Rye (named for the kind of whiskey) and started working on training with her. She was our first intake when I co-founded Laila's Legacy in 2023 and we've been working to find her a home since then. RYE IN THE HOME / HER PERFECT FIT: Rye has the funniest personality. She's got energy, bounciness, and is so inquisitive. She's also insanely smart. The latter is a blessing and a curse because she learns training so quickly, has great recall (although I've never allowed her to be off-leash just long-lines for hikes/walks), and learned leash walking skills very quickly. On the flip side, she needs a lot of mental stimulation to keep that big brain happy! I've found it really can be a mix of things to do that though - sitting outside on the stoop to people watch from my house, sitting in a park with her practicing neutrality (and getting treats of course) while I read, practicing all her tricks, working on recall on a long-line, playing tug/fetch, brain games and puzzle toys, you name it. Anyone that is excited to go on walks and spend time with their dog - have a companion - will love Rye. She just wants to hang with her humans and get some mental stimulation while she does it. In late 2021, Rye started urinating in her crate. An odd behavior because she's very potty trained and crate trained. In early 2022 she had a seizure and it was then we discovered she was having mini-seizures causing her to urinate in her crate. Unfortunately, they do still occasionally happen but she takes a once daily med called Keppra which is easy to get from Chewy and she LOVES peanut butter so she takes it every day without issue. I've seen the crate urination drastically reduce and when I was working from home full-time it was non existent because she was hanging with me outside of the crate so much. Rye's intelligence comes from her breed - likely Catahoula or some sort of herding breed. That's where her prey drive comes from as well so she'd prefer a home without cats! When it comes to her relationship with dogs, she loves to play. She'll play with mine and have a grand ol' time romping around with them. Because of her herding tendencies she's been muzzle trained as well for playing and has a cute bright pink muzzle for when it's needed and she wears it with ~style~. In the home, Rye will guard her items from other dogs. This could include food, toys, bed, etc. so for her sake we recommend she not go to a home with dogs in it. But honestly, that will also be a win-win because she LOVES her humans so fiercely and wants to be your companion that it'll let her have all the one-on-one time she and her future owner will love. Rye has been through a training program and her trainer loves her. Rye's future forever family will be connected with that trainer for a "Rye 101 Course" on her training and are highly encouraged to do more sessions and continue to build her education! While I adore Rye with my whole heart, and have been honored to spend so much time with her, it's time for this sweet gal to find her forever home and get OUT of the rescue world! She deserves to be the spoiled queen she wants to be and I can' t wait to see that for her! Please check out her video at here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3Oz8dKkj64 ------------ Laila's Legacy Animal Rescue does not guarantee that any dog is housebroken nor crate trained. Wherever I go, I stand out in the crowd — and not just because of my looks, but because of my happy, friendly spirit. I was rescued by K-9 Lifesavers from an overcrowded shelter in Alabama along with my two siblings (Thumper and Gurri), and now I’m ready to find my forever family. At my prime age for training and socialization, I’m eager to learn, explore, and show off just how smart a girl I can be. I’m sweet, outgoing, and love making new friends. With other dogs, I can sometimes be a little possessive of my toys and food — but with guidance and consistency, that’s something that can be easily managed. I might do best as an only dog or with slow introductions. All I’m missing is someone to call my own. Could that be you?       Apply today — your best friend might just have four paws and a dazzling pair of eyes!Your new pet will require a refresher in house-training. Thankfully, Poppy’s story didn’t end there — because this sweet girl is now ready to find the forever family she truly deserves.     Poppy is a sweet medium-sized gal who obviously once belonged to someone as she is calm (a little shy right now), well-mannered and very friendly. She also has spent time in a foster home with small children. This lovely lady has a nice medium energy level, and she gets along wonderfully with other dogs, so she would likely enjoy having a canine buddy in her forever home. She also did well with our test cat.     We have learned that Poppy has heartworm, but no worries, with treatment provided by K-9 Lifesavers, she'll be feeling fine in no time. What Poppy wants most is simple: a safe place to land, a family who won’t leave her behind, and a lifetime of love to make up for the one she lost. Lady Bird landed in the shelter through no fault of her own and she's eager to once again have her own humans. For sniffy walks (that hound nose - IYKYK!) and world exploration and quality kibble and a cushy dog bed, yes. But as an experienced dog, she knows what's most important in life: Knowing where she belongs, being safe and loved. What do you say? Are you her fresh start? Is she the one you see by your side?   What My Foster Says About Me:     I’ve had the pleasure of fostering Lady Bird for just a few days, and even in this short time, she has quietly started to show who she really is, and it is very special. When she first arrived, Lady Bird kept to herself, finding comfort in her crate and watching the world from a safe distance. Everything was new and a bit overwhelming, but even then, you could see her gentle, sweet nature just beneath the surface. She is still decompressing and building confidence, but each day she’s taking small, meaningful steps forward.   Lady Bird is very much a hound at heart. She loves to take her time outside, following her nose and exploring the world at her own pace. She has a particular interest in sniffing cars (minivans especially) and while she’s still building confidence in new environments, she becomes more curious and engaged once she’s outside. Inside the home, Lady Bird currently prefers her crate as her safe space and does best when it is partially covered, which helps her feel secure. She is also a big napper (and snorer) and spends a lot of her day resting and recharging, which seems to help her process everything around her. That said, she is beginning to branch out!   Today she went up and down the stairs on her own and, for the first time, chose to settle on the couch after I showed her that she was allowed. After a while, she quietly shifted closer, rested against me, and fell asleep. It was a small but incredibly meaningful moment of trust. Lady Bird is the kind of dog who doesn’t rush into things. She may not always ask for attention, but when she feels safe and you show her that she is allowed to want things, she truly melts into her surroundings. She is very gentle and has shown polite interest in other dogs, as she enjoys a quick sniff and then moves on. As a former mom, she seems to have a soft spot for younger dogs and calmly notices children on walks, standing still so they can pet her. She is also still working on eating consistently and can sometimes eat or drink too quickly when she does, so smaller, more frequent meals have been helpful.   Heartworm information: Lady Bird is a truly Lucky Dog. She tested positive for heartworms, but has been treated! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment. She has completed this activity restriction period.    Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken.  All of our dogs are working on their crate training.  TO ADOPT:    The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment.  If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog   Lucky Dog Animal Rescue does our best to provide accurate information about the dogs we have for adoption. To learn more about Barney, please get in touch with dogs@lostdogrescue.org. Meet Barney, a handsome hound with soulful eyes, a heart as big as his ears, and a nose for fun! This 3-year-old charmer is sweet and full of love for his people and canine friends. True to his hound heritage, Barney is curious about the world and always ready to follow an exciting scent or go on a new adventure with his favorite humans. Barney is a playful, puppy-at-heart guy who brings the party wherever he goes. He enjoys the company of other dogs, loves engaging with his people, and is crate trained—his cozy retreat after a day of fun. He’s currently living in a home with other dogs he loves to romp around with. With his signature hound voice and expressive personality, Barney is sure to keep life entertaining and full of smiles. This fun-loving boy would thrive in a home with a fenced yard to explore, lots of enrichment, and a family excited to continue his training journey. He’d be a fantastic match for an active household with adults and older kids, as well as another playful dog, where he can burn off energy, learn new tricks, and soak up affection. If you’re looking for a loyal, lovable, and energetic hound companion, Barney is ready to follow you home!

Story
To learn more about Pennick, please get in touch with dogs@lostdogrescue.org Pennick will be at one of our adoption events this weekend! Visit our event page (https://www.lostdogrescue.org/events/) to see which one—event listings are usually updated on Fridays with attending dogs. If you’re looking for a happy-go-lucky, sweet, and radiant girl, you’ve found her! Meet Pennick, the hound mix described by all who meet her as a sweet and friendly gal that is just so happy and so much fun to be around. She carries herself with a smile and love for life that is infectious. She is most excited to go outside; she loves walking, sniffing, and just being in the great outdoors. While she has done well inside and outside, she prefers to be outside, only needing a little time to adjust to being inside. New experiences can be a bit overwhelming for Pennick, as she is a fan of the investigate slowly method, rather than jumping right in. Once she’s comfortable, she continues being herself, bringing all the joy with her! This pretty girl isn’t just the best dog; she is also a looker! Her outstanding white coat with tan spots distinguishes her from the rest of the pack. Speaking of, Pennick has been just as friendly to other dogs as to all her human buddies. Ready to add some joy to your life? Adopt Pennick today!
