Story
All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated, and microchipped.  * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. Our adoption fees vary. Each biography will specifically list the adoption fee. This dog will be at a meet and greet event on Saturday, February 24th unless he/she is adopted prior to the event with a set up home. The event is from 12 pm to 3 pm at Palo Alto's Pet Food Express. Those interested in meeting the dog can come out to our meet and greet event. We no longer do application approval onsite. Anyone adopting has been previously approved and set up to meet prior to the event. Adoption Fee: $500   Pine Cone is a 2 year old Chihuahua mix who was surrendered to DPS after a good citizen saved him from the side of the road. This tiny dude has a fabulous cow print body, a zest for adventure, and a permanent little pout that is just precious. Pine Cone is the perfect size for all the adventures life has in store for him, so bring this pawfect pup home today!   Below is a note from Pine Cone’s foster.  “Pine Cone is a cute little small dude! He has a permanent pouting face, black whisker on one side and white on another, some black nails and some white - but most importantly... an elephant pattern on his butt! He is a curious boy who loves sniffing out all the nooks and crannies our home has to offer. He has been gaining confidence through our resident dog, which is absolutely adorable.  Pine Cone wakes up around 7 AM and is taken outside for a potty break. After breakfast, he gets a short walk before we start our workday. During the day, he spends his time sleeping, playing with our resident dog, seeking us out for cuddles, and exploring the house. He gets a longer walk after we finish our workdays. Dinner is at 7 PM and then he joins us on the couch for TV and snuggles. He goes out for one more bathroom break before heading to his crate for bed.  We have not heard Pine Cone make a peep except a cute little grunt when he jumps on the couch. He also seems to be okay with the crate; he just needs a little nudge and will go inside by himself. He stayed in the crate overnight with no issues and ate his meals inside. Pine Cone hasn't had an accident in the house but didn't seem enthusiastic/willing to go when we took him to our backyard or on the walk - the trick is to ignore him and he'll go looking for a spot the moment you leave the scene.”   Pine Cone is an option for just about any kind of home, as long as they are prepared for an adorable pup! Kids in the home should be over the age of 8.February 24, 2024, 7:48 pm

Adoption Fee: $500   Acorn is a 2 year old Chihuahua mix who was surrendered to DPS after being rescued by a good samaritan who stepped in and saved him from a bad situation. While we may not know everything about this guy before he came to us, we know that everything has been coming up Acorn ever since he joined our rescue! This petite dude has been working on his gains, and can’t wait to find a loving forever home to show off his amazing personality in!    Below is a note from Acorn’s foster. “Acorn is a sweet and sensitive little guy who adores his chosen people more than anything else in the entire world. For such a small guy, it is understandable that the world around him is very big, but watching his confidence grow in the time he has been with me has been amazing to see. He likes to stay as close as possible to me as I go about my day and is the world’s most adorable shadow. Acorn is more of a lounger than a playing dog and is happy to snooze the day away in his doggy bed next to you as you work. This boy is so sweet and gentle and took to my house quickly. He has the cutest way of seeking attention, putting his front paws on the couch or my leg and gazing at me with his puppy dog eyes. He loves it when I scoop him up onto my lap for a cuddle.  Acorn wakes up at 7:30 and heads right outside for a walk and potty followed by breakfast. He trots along next to me as I get ready for work and then snoozes next to me as I start my day, getting up when I do to make sure he doesn’t miss the chance for a treat! He gets another meal around lunchtime before his afternoon walk and dinner. We unwind from the day as we watch TV and snuggle. Acorn turns in for the night around 10 PM and happily heads to his crate to dream of treats and snuggles ahead the next day!  Acorn gets along with dogs and would do well with a confident canine sibling who can continue showing him the ropes, but he would also thrive as a solo pup. He walks well on a leash but is still building his confidence around loud noises and sudden movements outdoors. Acorn is such a chill and loving companion once he warms up to you. I promise this guy will be your faithful buddy for life if you are lucky enough to earn his love!”   Acorn is only an option for those with prior dog experience, with shy dog experience prioritized. Another dog in the home would likely be the best fit for Acorn. Kids in the home should be over the age of 10 and understand the needs of a shy dog.  February 24, 2024, 7:48 pm

Anyone adopting has been previously approved and set up to meet prior to the event. Adoption Fee: $500   Green Bean is a 4 month old Chihuahua mix who will make even the strongest veggie haters fall in love. This little girl came from the shelter with her brother String Bean, and has been living her best life ever since! She is now ready to sow her oats and find her forever home to bloom in.    Below is a note from Green Bean’s foster.  “Green Bean is the happiest puppy around and can’t wait to make her forever home fall in love with her! She loves to play, both with her brother and with their assortment of toys. She has adorable zoomies and makes us all laugh multiple times a day as her body tries to keep up with her legs. Like her brother, she is super friendly and makes any stranger her best friend within minutes of meeting them.  String Bean is Mr. Cuddler and loves nothing more than curling up as you work and snoozing the day away. He is super friendly, absolutely adorable, and loves zooming around showing off his toys with a wag in his tail. String Bean is the chiller of the two Beans, but he can still get down with the best of them!  The Beans wake up at 6:30 AM for a potty session before coming inside for breakfast. After they eat, they play for an hour or so before snoozing in their crate for a morning nap. During the day, they alternate between zooming around the yard, napping together, playing inside with toys, and getting their cuddles in. They have dinner at 5:30 PM before cuddling and playing some more. They go out for one last potty before bed, heading to their crate by 8:30 PM.   The Beans get along with dogs of all sizes and are respectful to kitties they meet. They adore humans and seek out cuddles and affection from anyone they meet. The puppies are progressing very well in their house training and usually let us know when they need to go outside.”   Green Bean is an option for homes with prior dog experience, even if it is not personal dog ownership. Kids in the home should be over the age of 7.February 24, 2024, 7:48 pm

Adoption Fee: $600   Pumpkin is a 4 year old Chihuahua mix who came into our rescue five weeks ago with her six babies (we have taken to calling them her Pumpkin Patch). This petite gal only weighs 11 pounds, which makes her the perfect companion for anyone seeking a small companion to complete their pack. Pumpkin also has goofy Dumbo ears which pop up from time to time (see attached photos) which have made her a favorite in the rescue. Bring Pumpkin home just in time for the holidays!   Pumpkin has the sweetest temperament and will be a wonderful family pet. She is loving and loyal, sweet and funny, but isn’t the kind of velcro dog who needs to have eyes on you 24/7. She is perfectly fine to hang out on her own when she needs to. She has been a wonderful and patient mom to her puppies and the other dogs in the foster home. She is very intelligent and in-tune with her foster family. We know she will be learning new tricks in no time! Pumpkin wakes up at 8 AM and (after a big stretch) heads out for a potty break. She then eats breakfast and spends the morning romping in the yard with the resident dogs and her puppies. In the afternoon, she splits her time basking in the sun, cuddling up in a cozy blanket, or checking out the garden with us. She spends the evening cozying up on the couch with us soaking up endless belly rubs.  Pumpkin has been the ultimate tiny bundle of love who will make any family lucky enough to adopt her so happy. She is just the best kind of rescue dog, one who will give you back the love you have for her tenfold. Pumpkin has gotten along fabulously with all the people she has met and has fared well in the hustle and bustle of a busy house. We will miss Pumpkin tremendously but we can’t wait to see her bloom in her forever home.    Pumpkin is an option for just about any kind of home. She would be a fantastic option for a first time dog owning household. Pumpkin is an option for a home where kids are over the age of 7. February 24, 2024, 7:48 pm

Story
FOSTER CARE! Hi, my name is Carla! I am a 3 year old, 12lbs., spayed female chihuahua. I’m a curious little girl that takes a while to warm up to new surroundings, and I’m looking for a patient family that will give me the time I need to warm up to new people. Once I’m comfortable though, I squeak for belly rubs and will roll around in my dog bed! I love to explore once I’m ready, and I love to lie in sunny spots. I even know how to use a doggie door when I want to! I sure do love meal time and treats. I have lived with other dogs before and get along fine if they give me my space, but I also wouldn’t mind being the only dog in the house. I am crate trained, and my foster family says I'm pretty potty trained!    Carla AID# A928346 Since I’m not at the adoption center, you can make arrangements to meet me by emailing behavior@phs-spca.org You may also submit your fully completed Adoption Profile Form to behavior@phs-spca.org and a staff member will call you to conduct a phone interview before making an appointment to meet me in person. Hey there, I'm Fawn! I am a 1 year old, 7lbs., spayed female Chihuahua. I'm a gentle and cautions little gal that likes to take my time getting to know new people, but watch out when I become friends, I give all the kisses! I'm a great couch buddy but also enjoy frolicking in the yard as well. I would love a quieter home with older dog savvy kids, ready for the typical Chihuahua that I am. This gorgeous, fluffy boy was surrendered to the local shelter when his former home was no longer able to care for him. We scooped him out of his kennel and promised him a bright life ahead. After a good bath and groom, Playboy’s floofy body was looking fabulous and now he is ready for his new home! Playboy will require regular grooming in his new home.    Below is a note from Playboy’s foster.  “Playboy is a gorgeous and loyal boy who loves dancing the day away! He loves to greet us by springing up onto his hind legs and wiggling around in excitement. He adores his people and is happiest when everyone is giving him all the love he deserves. Playboy has reformed his ways and once he chooses his people, he is devoted to them forever. At the same time, Playboy has a great, laid-back personality and he is happy to hang out when his dancing feet need a break. Toys? He’s into it. Cuddles? He’s all in! Playboy also mastered the art of potty training! What a charmer.  Playboy starts his day at 7 AM with a morning walk and breakfast. During the day, he alternates between snuggling with us, napping on his bed, and trotting around the house keeping himself aware of what’s happening. He gets another walk and feeding between 7-9 PM. He is flexible and goes with our daily routine. He walks very well on a leash.  Playboy adores people and soaks up the attention he gets when he struts by on walks. He gets along well with other dogs especially when he has the chance for a slower introduction. He could do well as a solo dog or as a new canine family member. We can’t wait for this playboy to find his forever family!”    Playboy is an option for just about any home, as long as they are prepared for the grooming requirements of the breed. Kids in the home should be over the age of 10.February 24, 2024, 7:48 pm
