Story
Meet Toby, a spirited 2-year-old large Chihuahua mix with a heart full of love. Toby came to us because his previous owner's child had allergies, but this little guy has proven to be a great family dog. He's super cuddly and did great living with kids of all ages. Toby has also lived with other small dogs and got along well, but we don't know how he'd do with cats. Toby is used to a very active home and thrives on lots of attention and playtime. He does have some quirks - he's a marker and isn't fully house trained, so he'll need some patience and consistency to help him learn. Toby can also get easily excited and sometimes struggles to calm down. He's a fierce barker at strangers, but it's all out of eagerness to make new friends. Once someone pets him, he turns into their best buddy. If you're considering adopting Toby, keep in mind that he's quite vocal and might not be the best fit for an apartment. But if you have an active lifestyle and the time to give him the training and affection he needs, Toby could be the perfect addition to your family. Come meet this energetic, lovable pup and see if he's the one you've been looking for! If you're ready to adopt within the next 24-48 hours and want to learn more about, meet, or adopt this pet, you can start the process in one of two ways: Come in during open adoption hours Tuesday - Saturday 12:30p-3:00p. For in-shelter pets (not in foster care) coming in ASAP is the fastest way to adopt! **OR** Click on the pink "Adopt me" button to submit an adoption inquiry. Watch your email for a response from us! Adopting through this process will take several days and highly desirable pets are likely to no longer be available. PLEASE NOTE: Adoption inquiries are not holds or reservations. Pets are adopted by the first person we talk with who is a good match for the pet's needs. Multiple inquiries are accepted for each pet. All adult dog adoption fees include; -spay/neuter -rabies and kennel cough vaccinations -current parvo/distemper vaccines (may need additional boosters with your veterinarian) -microchip implanted & registered to adopter -treatment of fleas & ticks -veterinary exam and health certificate at Dakin -free vet exam within 30 days of adoption with participating veterinarians Most pets have also received other medical care while with us. Your veterinarian may recommend additional health care for your pet.

Story
Parker is a friendly yet independent dog who enjoys chasing after squeaky toys much more than bringing them back to humans. He can be a vocal dog and we do not believe he would be a good fit for apartment living because he can be rather loud.OTHER PETS: Parker is a dog who pulls toward other dogs without barking but attempts to lunge at them once he is close enough. He is working on feeling better about the world around him, and is getting more relaxed on walks. He should be the only animal at his home. [Should Be Only Pet]OWNER EXPERIENCE: An owner with experience working with reactive dogs would be the best fit for Parker. [Some Experience] KIDS: Parker enjoys chasing squeaky toys but does not seem too interested in fetch and has not demonstrated any guarding behaviors. He is moderately social, uncomfortable with some handling, and would do best with humans who will respect his space. [13+ (Must Meet First)]ACTIVITY LEVEL: Parker is working on his leash walking, he does amazing when there are no distractions and has been improving. Daily walks, and slowly introducing longer walks around the neighborhood to his routine, will ensure Parker gets steps in. Be sure to keep walks short and pleasant as he gets to know his new home. [Good Walking Buddy] VETERINARY CARE: [Routine] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement training will help Parker bond with his owner, while learning basic cues and skills. Parker will need dedication and patience from his new owner on his journey to be the best dog he can be. [Moderate] GROOMING: [Minimal]July 26, 2024, 5:58 pm

Story
Some dogs are naturally timid or shy, while others may not have learned to trust people while they were young. These dogs need to feel safe before they will interact with people; the work to build a relationship of trust could be a long and hard one but the experience can be one of the most rewarding of dog ownership. Chicken Little Dogs: are fearful of new people and places, take time to trust, shut down here at the shelter, and will bite if people push or try to interact too quickly. However, once they trust a person, the often become very bonded.Petunia, as a chicken little dog, would do best in a quiet house with adults only. She's a dog that should be allowed to approach and adjust in her own time, so a patient owner who has experience with nervous dogs would be ideal.OTHER PETS:Petunia is a very nervous little girl, even with other dogs. She had some interest in sniffing, but preferred to keep to herself rather than play. She could possibly do well with a calm dog who will let her do her own thing and simply co-exist. [Case-By-Case (Must Meet First)]OWNER EXPERIENCE:Petunia would do best with someone who has previous experience with nervous dogs and knows how to help them adjust while allowing them to have their own safe space. Petunia is slow to warm up with new people, and is often more interested in investigating her environment than the people around her at first. [Some Experience]KIDS:Petunia is uncomfortable with some types of handling, especially around her tail. Because she is so nervous, it's likely that she'll be even more uncomfortable with people she doesn't trust yet. She needs time to adjust before being handled and would do best in a home with only adults, who will respect her boundaries & allow her time to decompress. [Adults Only]ACTIVITY LEVEL:When Petunia is comfortable with someone, she'll eagerly jump into their lap to cuddle up. While she hasn't been very energetic or shown much interest in play here at TJO, it's likely that she could become more playful once settled into her own home. [Couch Potato]VETERINARY CARE: [Routine]LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED:Petunia is a nervous dog, and so positive reinforcement training will help her to not only learn new skills, but also help her forge a stronger bond with her new owner. She's quite head shy as well, meaning that she doesn't like things going over her head-- including collars and leashes. With positive reinforcement training, this could be worked on over time, but it's never something that should be forced. [Minimal]GROOMING: [Minimal]July 26, 2024, 5:58 pm

Story
Anndalina 10 YEARS OLD. Chi mix. black with white, no kids, no cats, okay with some dogs, basics of potty training. Needs fenced in yard and no apartments. Anndalina came to us as an emergency surrender. This poor girl was trying to chew her tail off and needed emergency treatment. We rushed her into our vet and it was determined her tail would need to be amputated to prevent any infection from spreading. We whisked her into surgery and brought her back to one of our foster homes. Anndalina has had a rough beginning to her life and she will need a patient and understanding home to help her become the dog we know she can be. We would recommend she go to a child free home and a home where her Chihuahua bark will not be a problem. A nice quiet couple or single person would be the ideal place for her as she can become overwhelmed with too many visitors. Once she bonds to her people she is very affectionate but it will take a while for this nervous girl to settle into any new home and she will need to be given time to calm and adjust. Please note we do not have a central kennel facility, all of our pets are located in foster homes. The first step in meeting one of our furry friends is to fill out an application on our website at www.rainbowrescues.org. A volunteer will be in contact with you in 1-2 business days to review your application and speak with you about the adoption process. **Please be aware that we are not responsible for inaccurate information on some cross-posted sites such as inaccurate adoption fees and inaccurate pet info.**July 25, 2024, 6:38 am
