Meet Newton — a 1-year-old, 11 lb Chihuahua mix with stunning green eyes and a heart that’s learning to trust and love again. Quick Facts: Name: Newton Breed: Chihuahua Mix Age: 1 year old Weight: 11 lbs House-Trained: About 70% there! Crate-Trained: Yes Good with Dogs: Yes, would prefer a home with another dog companion Good with Cats: A little scared of cats Good with Kids: Yes, with older kids Energy Level: Medium Fence Required: Yes - he can be an "escape artist" About Newton’s Breed: Chihuahuas are bold, confident and loyal. They are affectionate with their people but can be wary of strangers but warm up quickly. They are intelligent and trainable, though they may be a little stubborn at times, but they keep it interesting! They are also known to be vocal and love to “chit chat”! Newton is a gentle soul with a playful streak and a head tilt that’ll melt your heart. When his foster mom talks to him, he tilts his head side to side like he’s hanging on every word! He’s about 70% potty trained, fully crate trained, and working hard to adjust to the comforts of a loving home. He is very attached to his people and would do best with someone or a family who is home more often. He would also love a doggie sibling to find comfort in and build his confidence! Newton’s Noteworthy Highlights: • Beautiful green eyes and an expressive little face • Crate trained, and progressing well with potty training • Loves toys, treats, and outdoor playtime • Medium energy—active in the yard, mellow on the couch • Dog-friendly, and loves to play with canine pals and would do best in a home with other dogs • Nervous around new people, but warms up with patience • Best with older, respectful kids—quick movements scare him • Scared of cats, but open to learning • Still learning leash confidence, but loves to explore (needs a fenced yard for safety) • A little food guarding behavior, likely from a tough past • Affectionate and cuddly, loves being near his people • Will crawl up your leg for love and snacks Newton is still a puppy at heart—curious, sensitive, and full of potential. He’s looking for a patient, loving family who will let him blossom at his own pace. With time, tenderness, and a cozy couch to snuggle on, Newton will become the most loyal little companion you could ask for. Story
Meet BLT — born October 17, 2025, this cheerful little pup is full of love, energy, and charm! Quick Facts: Name: BLT Breed: Chihuahua Mix Age: 2 months old Weight: 6 lbs. House-Trained: Working on it! Crate-Trained: No Good with Dogs: Yes (but with proper and slow introductions) Good with Cats: Not tested Good with Kids: Yes (older, respectful kids since he’s a puppy) Energy Level: Medium to High Fence Required: Unknown About BLT’s Breed: Our best guess is that BLT is a Chihuahua mix. Chihuahuas are tiny dogs with bold personalities, known for their loyalty, confidence, and affectionate nature. Despite their small size, they often act like big dogs, making them spirited companions who bond closely with their families. An ideal home for a Chihuahua is one that provides gentle handling, consistent routines, and lots of companionship. They thrive in apartments or houses alike, as long as they are kept safe, warm, and not left alone for long periods. Because of their delicate size, they do best in households where interactions—especially with children or other pets—are calm and respectful. With love and patience, Chihuahuas make devoted little companions who bring big personality to any home. All About BLT: BLT is super friendly and outgoing, always ready to play hard and then nap just as hard. He adores everyone he meets and has the best time romping around with his mom, Goldie, and his sister. His name has a sweet story—his foster mom shared her grilled cheese sandwich with BLT's mom, Goldie to help her feel safe and loved, and from that moment, BLT was named in honor of that special bond. BLT’s Highlights: • Playful and energetic, loves hard play sessions followed by cozy naps • Social butterfly, loves people and enjoys playing with his mom and sister • Adorable antics, always happy-go-lucky and full of puppy charm • Special name story, inspired by a moment of trust and love with his mom BLT is a joyful, affectionate pup who’s ready to bring laughter, cuddles, and endless fun to his forever family. Story
Meet Hammy — a 1-year-old, 11 lb Chiweenie with a heart full of love and a nose for adventure!   Quick Facts: Name: Hammy Breed: Chihuahua/Dachshund Mix Age: 1 year old Weight: 11 lbs. House-Trained: Yes, but may mark in a new place Crate-Trained: Yes Good with Dogs: Yes Good with Cats: Yes Good with Kids: Hasn’t been tested, but likely good with them Energy Level: Low to medium Fence Required: No   About Hammy’s Breed: Our best guess is that Hammy is a Chihuahua/Dachshund mix. The Chiweenie is a small, lively crossbreed between a Chihuahua and a Dachshund, known for its affectionate and playful personality. These pups typically weigh between 5–15 pounds and live 12–16 years, making them compact companions with a long lifespan. Chiweenies thrive on human companionship, often bonding closely with their favorite person, and are sometimes described as “Velcro dogs” because of their loyalty. They can be energetic and spunky, yet also love to cuddle, making them a great fit for families, singles, or seniors who want a devoted lap dog with a dash of sass.   Hammy is a sweet, loyal little guy who’s 99% potty trained (he may mark at first in a new place) and can be crated, though he’d much rather snuggle up with blankets and toys when left alone. He’s happiest when he’s with his people and doesn’t love being left for long, making him the perfect companion for someone who wants a devoted “Velcro” pup!   Hammy’s Highlights: Potty trained, may mark initially in new environments Crate trained, but prefers cozy blankets and toys when alone Dog- and cat-friendly, takes good direction when meeting new friends Great with people, likely to do well with gentle, respectful kids Chill personality, with bursts of cuteness, quirkiness, and humor Leash ready, loves walks and exploring with his nose Bed snuggler, happiest under the covers at night Food-motivated, warms up quickly when treats are involved Super loyal, thrives on companionship and cuddles   Hammy is a sweet soul who will bring endless joy, laughter, and love to his forever family. Whether he’s curled up under the covers, trotting beside you on a walk, or making you laugh with his funny antics, Hammy is ready to be your loyal little shadow and best friend!     Comprehensive details are provided in the dog's description. to ensure a smooth process, please submit a completed application through our website at: http://crisisdogsnc.org/dog-adoption/. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. PLEASE NOTE: If you are on PetFinder or other search site, you do NOT need to introduce yourself.  All dogs on our website ARE available and require an approved Best Friend Pet Adoption application before you can be considered or meet any of our dogs.  The link to our application is in the dogs bio below.         Bear – Sweet, Sleepy, and Searching for a Forever Home to Heal His Heart Bear is the kind of dog who makes you slow down, smile, and appreciate the quiet moments. This senior gentleman is soft, gentle, and incredibly affectionate — a dog who has weathered loss but still leans into love with his whole heart. He spends much of his time curled up in his small playpen, dozing on soft blankets, happy to watch the world from the safety of his cozy space. He uses wee-wee pads in his pen and will bark when he needs to go outside. Bear’s world was turned upside down when his devoted owner passed away. It’s obvious he was treasured — he loves being touched, being spoken to softly, and soaking up every bit of attention he can get. What he wants now is a calm, patient human who will help him feel safe again. He’s learning how to walk on a leash with a harness, but it’s still new and a little scary, so a fenced yard would help him feel calmer and more secure. Bear gets along with small female dogs but can be standoffish with males. He hasn’t been around kids or cats, but his gentle nature suggests he’d prefer a peaceful home with routines and reassurance. Bear is mostly quiet, giving a small bark only when he needs something important. He’s low-energy, happy to nap, stroll around a yard, and curl up at your feet. He could be an only dog if someone is home much of the day — a retiree or a work-from-home adopter would be perfect. &#226&#156&#168 Bear needs someone willing to give an overlooked senior a real chance. He is sweet. He is snuggly. He is heartbreakingly grateful for even the smallest kindness. If you give Bear a home, he will fill your days with warmth, loyalty, and quiet companionship. He just needs someone who will say, “Your story isn’t over yet.” EVERY DOG HAS A STORY:   Bears owner passed away and BFPA is helping him find his forever home.  Some of the information contained in this biography includes approximations based on our expertise and is not guaranteed.  Applicants must live no further than one hour from Cary NC as our dogs must be seen by a BFPA veterinarian for all medical care prior to adoptions being finalized.  Our foster guardians deliver dogs to their new homes for adoption trials and we do home visits to finalize all adoptions.  We therefore require applicants to live within an hours drive of Cary NC.
