Story
Meet Emmy, a 22-lb, 5-year-old doxie mix!  Background: Emmy is a resilient little lowrider with a heart of gold. She was rescued from a rural Arizona property where more than 30 dogs lived without running water or electricity. Despite her tough beginnings, Emmy carries herself like a dog who has only ever known kindness. Her gentle spirit and eagerness to love make her feel like a dog who’s been cherished her whole life.  Personality: Emmy is sweetness personified. She’s friendly with every person she meets and comfortable around dogs of all sizes. Her nature is soft, calm, and deeply affectionate—there isn’t a single hint of meanness in her. She adores curling up on cozy blankets, happily leans in for pets and head scritches, and has an adorable little pep in her step when she’s excited. Her little tail wags every time you say her name. Emmy is wonderfully expressive and will gently let you know when she’s ready for attention. Health: While Emmy has a few broken teeth from her past living conditions, she’s in remarkably good health, especially considering she spent most of her life outdoors. Emmy is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines.   Training: Emmy has excellent manners. She is fully housebroken, crate‑trained, and settling into leash walking beautifully for a dog who’s brand new to it. She’s eager to please and responds well to gentle guidance.  Ideal Home: Emmy is an easygoing girl who would thrive in almost any loving environment. She’d be just as content in an apartment as she would be in a larger home. The one non‑negotiable is a secure, fenced‑in yard where she can safely explore and enjoy the outdoors at her own pace. Because she’s a small dog living in the Phoenix area, her family should also be mindful of local wildlife, ensuring she’s supervised outside and protected from potential encounters with coyotes and other desert critters. Beyond that, Emmy simply wants a family who will give her the comfort, safety, and affection she’s always deserved.  Adoption Requirements: Emmy's adoption fee is $350. If you live in the Phoenix metro area and think she could be the right fit for you, please complete an adoption application*: helpadogsmile.org/adoption-application  *Please note that the application is not a commitment to adopt–it is a tool used to help determine if a dog and applicant would make a good match. Applications are forwarded to the foster family for review and follow-up.  April 19, 2026, 7:24 pm

Story
Jensen is an adorable little 1-1/2 year old, 14 pound Dachshund / Terrier blend who joined us recently and is now looking for his forever home.To get started in the process of meeting this dog, please visit https://azfriends.org/testing/adopt.html to complete an adoption consultation form, and then come by the Adoption Center to meet with one of our adoption counselors. No appointments are necessary and you can come and see us any time we are open. Please go to our website (www.azfriends.org) to fill out a consultation form then come and see us! We do require any family interested in meeting our dogs or cats to fill out a consultation form – this form helps us determine if the dog/cat and the home are a good match, since it is so easy to fall in love with a photo, without knowing the personality of the animal. Once you have filled out the online Adoption Consultation Form, just come in and see us (or come and see us and fill out the consultation form upon arrival)! Please note that ALL dogs and cats are available to the first home that meets the dog or cat that we feel is a good match. In order to help make the best match, we do want all family members (dogs and humans) to meet any potential new family member. Our adoption center hours are: Closed Sunday/Monday; Tuesday 10a-2p, Wednesday 3p-7p, Thursday 3p-7p, Friday 10a-2p, Saturday 10a-4p. We are located at 952 W Melody Avenue in Gilbert (zip code 85233).All animals are altered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, licensed (dogs). Cats tested for FELV/FIV. Dogs tested for Heartworm. All animals are available to the first family that is a good match, and if we have more than one animal who is a good match, there will be a lottery for all matches. Note that families must have come in to our adoption center and spoken with an adoption counselor prior to any lottery (when we have lotteries, they usually occur on Saturday mornings).

Story
Dexter is a deeply loved 8-year-old Chihuahua, Dachshund, and German Shepherd mix. I brought him home as a tiny puppy, and he has been part of my family ever since. He is intelligent, affectionate, loyal, and emotionally aware. Dexter loves cuddling, movie nights, sleeping under a blanket, twice-daily walks, and treats like blueberries, green beans, and carrots. He enjoys chasing birds and may be open to more adventures. This is a heartbreaking decision, but my life changed unexpectedly when I took in my 10-month-old grandchild. I am hoping to find Dexter a calm, stable, loving home where he will be safe, happy, and truly cherished. Dexter is not adjusting well to having a mobile baby in the home and would do best in a calm home without small children.

Spayed or Neutered,
Story
Mindy and Peanut are two darling dogs with lovely personalities. They are friendly with EVERYONE and very loving. The director of this rescue came upon these beautiful girls just minutes before they were going to be euthanized. Their owner was in hospice and had requested the dogs be euthanized because she did not know what else to do with them, and she herself was dying. Our rescue Director, while picking up Rescue dogs at the veterinarian, intervened upon hearing that these two lively, beautiful girls were going to die well before their time. The girls are thankful to be alive and seem so happy even after having lost the only home they had ever known. We would love to find them a home together where they can live out their remaining years. Other than being overweight, they are both very healthy, spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. Adoption Fee: total for both dogs- $300 This fee includes at least one health exam with our veterinarian while in our care, spay/neuter, all vaccinations (including rabies, as age-appropriate), a pre-adoption professional grooming, and a microchip with lifetime registration at no additional cost. Dogs also leave with a new collar and/or harness, leash, and a gift bag that includes, among other things, a starter bag of the quality kibble currently fed at the rescue. Adoption fees also help us rescue the next homeless or unwanted dog in need. If you would like to be considered for Mindy and Peanut or any of our wonderful dogs, please complete an application here. https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/AZST/Dog We review each application carefully. Please understand that we often receive multiple applications for specific dogs, and as a volunteer-run rescue, we may not be able to respond to everyone. All applications remain in our database, so please feel free to reach out if another dog catches your interest. We truly appreciate every applicant and strive to match each dog and family for a happy, successful life together.
