DESCRIPTION:  Apollo's owner loved him greatly but struggled to keep him safe and in the household. As a result, Apollo spent too much time wandering about the neighborhood and checking in with the neighbors.  Unfortunately, this resulted in too many trips to animal control. Due to his frequent visits, Animal Control decided that Apollo would be safer if he moved forward with a new family.  Apollo is a big, sweet guy. Although it is clear that he has not had a lot of structure prior to his arrival, he is a quick learner and seems to prefer a calm yet confident handler. Apollo has lived with a couple of cats and has done well with them. He seems unaffected by their presence and is calm with them around. Having met a variety of dogs in his travels, Apollo has made it clear that he can live peacefully with another dog. However, he is not a big fan of high-energy dogs who get in his face. We can't blame him for setting his boundaries. Apollo is looking for a forever home that will provide him with the guidance and routine that will help him thrive. He will benefit greatly from training with his new family. This will not only help him bond to his new family but it will also help him develop the skills needed to become a good canine citizen. If your household is looking for a big, laid back guy, ask to meet Apollo today! July 23, 2024, 5:11 pm

Story
DESCRIPTION:  Beautiful Bailey was adored by her family. They knew she was a special girl and ensured that she had endless love, attention, and plenty of toys. However, when an unexpected event took place, they were unable to keep Bailey and provide her with the life they knew she deserved. Recognizing that we would provide Bailey with everything she needed to meet with success, her family made the heartbreaking decision to return her to the MAGSR. Knowing this was a very difficult decision, we promised we would find Bailey the perfect forever family.  Bailey is an active, intelligent, and playful girl. She loves her people fiercely and gives them every ounce of affection she has. With some very strong GSD traits, Bailey is loyal, protective, and on point. She tends to notice everything around her and keeps an eye on her people at all times.  As a girl with a high prey drive, smaller creatures can be a little too enticing for Bailey. She finds joy in chasing small creatures, such as rabbits and squirrels, and will need to be monitored closely if they are out and about with her. Fond of the outdoors, Bailey is always up for a long walk, hike, or adventure. She takes cues well from the handler and knows many commands. Lucky to have lived in a loving household for a few years, Bailey has developed a solid understanding of and appreciation for toys; she is hoping her forever family enjoys them too! She loves to play ball and can't help but enjoy a good squeaky toy. With a few years of experience living in a home, Bailey has also developed an affinity for a soft bed. She loves cuddling up on her dog bed and doesn't mind having a dog bed or two in the house just to change up viewpoints throughout the day. Although Bailey is crate trained and housebroken, once settled, she prefers to be out and about. This seems to keep her more settled throughout the day. As is true of all shepherds Bailey will thrive with structure, routine, and leadership. Providing clear boundaries and expectations will help Bailey meet with success. Bailey has already completed some basic training; however, she is always up for more! Continued training is essential to Bailey's success. Not only will it help her develop her canine citizenship skills, but it will also help her develop a strong and healthy bond with her forever family.  July 23, 2024, 5:11 pm

Story
DESCRIPTION:  Handsome Storm lived in a home. However, due to an issue with the landlord, he was surrendered to a local shelter. Although shepherds typically struggle in shelters, Storm is special as he remained friendly and affectionate with staff. Recognizing that Storm deserved every chance to find a loving forever family, staff began searching for a shepherd rescue that would help this boy on his journey. Working with us to find the right circumstances to welcome Storm, the shelter staff provided this guy with the safety and security needed to move forward.  Storm is a friendly and playful guy. He has handled all of the changes in his life like a champ. However, it is important that Storm's forever family recognize that he has been through a lot and will need time to adjust to his forever home. Having moved into an incredible foster home, Storm has been enjoying the comforts of a soft bed and calm environment. He has quickly charmed his foster family. As Storm continues to move forward, he will thrive with structure, routine, and leadership. This is typical of all GSDs. Training will go a long way with this boy. Not only will training help Storm develop a strong and healthy bond with his forever family, but it will also help him develop into a good canine citizen.  While at the shelter, staff noticed some concerns with Storms hips. They took the important steps of getting him to a vet who began running tests and x-rays. It was discovered that Storm has severe hip dysplasia. At this time his right hip is of greatest concern. However, an injury to his cruciate ligament was also found within Storm's right knee. By the time he was seen, he had already lost a lot of muscle around his hips and legs. Storm has begun to receive the care he needs to move forward. He is being monitored by our incredible vetting team while we rebuild muscle. He will also begin working with an orthopedic specialist in order to determine next steps for an orthopedic repair. Storm's care will be very expensive; however, we know he is more than worth the cost. Please consider donating to his medical needs. Your donation will not only help us continue to move Storm forward, but it will also help us continue to support medical dogs in need. Storm will be taking it slow over the next few months while we help him heal. Please continue to watch for updates on his care.  July 23, 2024, 5:11 pm

Story
DESCRIPTION: The Fall puppies - Autumn, Cider, Ember, Maple, Pumpkin, and Sweet Potato (Tator) - were an accidental litter. Raised together with their parents, these dogs have had the chance to learn many doggy social skills. Although their human family enjoyed the puppies, it can be difficult to care for a large litter and challenging to find safe and loving homes. Recognizing that the Fall puppies would be most successful if placed within a breed specific rescue, their family contacted MAGSR. We promised that we would find each pup a safe and loving forever family that would cherish these babies for a lifetime.  The Fall puppies are very large babies for their age. They are clearly big fans of food. Having spent time outside, these babies love the sights, sounds, and smells of the outdoors. So, they are hoping their forever families love adventures. Although these babies have been socialized well with their doggy family, they have not been exposed to many new people or situations. Socialization is critical to their success. Recognizing that social skills are essential as the Fall puppies move forward, our amazing volunteers are already beginning this process. Learning the ins and outs of living in a household, these babies are learning the joys of endless toys, comfortable beds, and loads of love. As they continue to move forward, all six babies will strive in households that will provide the structure, routine, and leadership that all shepherds crave.  Although these babies are absolutely adorable, please remember that puppies are a lot of work. Puppies will whine, chew, have accidents, and fill your home with endless antics. With time, training, and patience, all 6 babies - Autumn, Cider, Ember, Maple, Pumpkin, and Sweet Potato - will develop into good canine citizens. If one of the Fall puppies sounds like the right match for your household, ask to meet these fluffy bundles of joy today! July 23, 2024, 5:11 pm

Story
DESCRIPTION: Obie was picked up as a stray in the south and brought to a shelter where he waited patiently for his family to come and claim him. Unfortunately, no one stepped forward for this handsome guy. So, he waited patiently for a new family of his very own. As he waited, shelter staff fell in love with this boy. His happy-go-lucky personality and unending tail wags bring smiles to everyone he meets. Although shelters everywhere are struggling with overwhelming numbers of animals in need, Obie was incredibly lucky when shelter staff endlessly advocated for him to keep him alive and wait for the right placement. Unlike so many others, Obie was protected and waited for 6 months at the shelter for placement. When we learned that Obie needed a chance with a rescue that would make his wish come true, we knew this boy would find success with MAGSR. Obie's incredible team came together for him and made sure that he had the vetting needed and volunteers in place to make his journey to the mid-Atlantic and join MAGSR. We promised all of his fans that we would find him a forever home that would adore him forever.  Obie is a joyful guy. He is active, energetic, friendly, and ready for an adventure. Having done well with other dogs at the shelter, Obie was a good doggy tester and read situations well. We do not know anything about Obie's past prior to his arrival at the shelter, but we do know that this boy was well-socialized with people and in many environments. Obie seems to go with the flow remarkably well for a dog that has been through so many changes. At this time Obie is settling in with one of our amazing foster families. They are giving him opportunities to interact with new people, play with toys, and experience the joy and comfort of a loving home. Obie, like all of our dogs, will benefit from structure, routine, and leadership. Set expectations and guidance will help him thrive. Although Obie has an endless list of positive attributes, he will need to work on his leash manners. He is so excited about the world that he can forget to walk with his people and tries to pull ahead. Training will be critical to Obie's success. Not only will training help Obie develop a special bond with his family, but it will also help Obie develop into a good canine citizen. If your family is looking for a happy-go-lucky, adventurous guy, ask to meet outstanding Obie today! July 23, 2024, 5:11 pm

Story
DESCRIPTION: Sweet Marmaduke is a little fighter. Having wandered up to a home with his brother the puppies were sick, filled with worms, underfed, dirty, and in need of help. Luckily the boys wandered up to the right home as the owners immediately contacted their local animal services so they could work together to get the boys everything they needed. Although appointments were put into place and rescuers were contacted for help, Marmaduke's brother passed away during the night on their second night. Recognizing that the boys were sicker than anyone realized, Marmaduke was rushed to the vet. Although everyone was hoping their worst fears were not true, unfortunately, Marmaduke popped positive for parvovirus. This disease is preventable with proper vaccinations. However, once it sets in it can take many lives. Having lost his brother and weak from everything the two had endured, we were not sure if Marmaduke would have the strength to fight. However, we also knew this little guy deserved every chance make a full recovery. So, MAGSR began working with the local shelter, a local foster, and an incredible veterinary team to ensure that Marmaduke was provided with everything he needed. As is true of many dogs suffering from parvo, Marmaduke did need to be admitted for round-the-clock care.  Fortunately, our little fighter clearly wants to survive and has done well with the support provided. He has been released from the hospital and one of our amazing foster families has welcomed him into their home. Although this is a huge step, Marmaduke is still being monitored very closely and is receiving daily medical support. We are hoping that he continues to rest and recover so that when he is ready, this sweet and affectionate guy will find a forever family that will cherish him for a lifetime. As is true of all parvo puppies, Marmaduke's care is expensive. However, MAGSR knows that he is worth every penny. Please consider donating to Marmaduke's medical needs. Not only will this help us continue to meet his needs, but it will also help us continue to welcome dogs who would not have survived without extensive medical intervention.  Marmaduke is a special guy who has already survived more than he should have at such a young age. Our entire team is hoping he keeps fighting so that, when he is ready, he can live out his life with an incredible forever family. July 23, 2024, 5:11 pm
