When Chicago Animal Care and Control reached out about five severely neglected dogs in desperate need, we had no idea just how heartbreaking their condition would be. Jamaica, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Patra, and Reggae — all under 2 years old — had clearly spent their short lives in unimaginable filth, pain, and neglect.Their coats were so matted, tightly pulling at their skin, that several had to be sedated just to be shaved. The smell of urine and feces was overwhelming — a painful reminder of how forgotten they’d been. Once we could finally see the dogs beneath the tangles, we discovered Reggae had a large growth on his eye that required immediate surgery to remove it.They were rushed to our vets, cleaned up by our patient groomers, and shown compassion — maybe for the very first time.Now, they need something more — a home. A kind, patient family who will give them the safety and affection they’ve always deserved.

I’m looking to find a new home for Gizmo, my 10-year-old Maltese. We’ve had him since he was a puppy, and he’s always been part of our family. Due to significant changes in family circumstances over the years, I took him in when I moved into my apartment. Unfortunately, I’ve learned that he has developed severe separation anxiety, and with my current work schedule and apartment setup, I can’t provide the stable environment he needs. Gizmo is a healthy, well-behaved boy who deserves a loving home where someone can help him work through his anxiety. He would do best in a home where his occasional barking or howling won’t disturb neighbors. He’s a little spoiled but he’s a fast learner and loves attention. I’ll also provide all of his supplies to make the transition easier, including a 6+ month supply of his kibble, his bed, toys, and grooming supplies. We’d love to stay in touch and check in from time to time, if possible as he means a lot to our family.

Hes been around a cat previously for 5 years and they got along well. He hasn’t been around a lot of toddlers. He needs a lot of attention and would do well with someone who is retired or works from home. Both of my kids are grown and moved out and I’m taking care of my mother who has Alzheimer’s by myself now. I don’t have the bandwidth to give him the attention he deserves and that’s why I’m looking for a home for him. He’s only 7 pounds and a lot of fluff so he can run in between your legs so not good for someone who can trip easily. He is a lap dog and is perfectly content just cuddling with someone. He does have a high-pitched bark and loves to talk when he’s excited. He is neutered and up to date with all shots. He did have bladder stones and he’s on a vet px diet and is due for his 4-month checkup to see if he has any left which I’m taking him to in another week. He just had a checkup, and his teeth cleaned end of last year. He’s in good health and very friendly. He doesn’t like to be on his back, so you have to hold him like a football but loves to be in someone’s arms. He is crate trained, and pee pad trained. I keep a pad in the bathroom for him in case, but he will go outside if you take him out regularly and as soon as he’s done eating. For adoption information, please email momi1600@gmail.com.

Crate trained: Squash does best free-roaming in a safeguarded (no access to stairs, trip hazards etc) space when home alone. Leash walking: He has seemed fearful on leash and would likely do best with access to a fenced yard Dog social: He lives with respectful dogs in his foster home and has done well in co-existing peacefully with them Cat social: Unknown Kid friendly: Unknown, but he may be most comfortable with slightly older kids given his limited vision Squash likes: - Napping in a cozy spot - Snacktime - Building trust with his people Squash is a super laid back guy, but is still adjusting to all of the newness around him...and to navigating the world with limited vision. He is very sweet and working hard to open up as he acclimates to his new environment, and would appreciate a patient adopter who can help him along the way! Squash has been diagnosed with Cushing’s Disease, which is a chronic disease that will likely require lifelong medication to manage it. He had his right eye removed while in our care, and is suspected to have little or no vision in his remaining left eye. Clocking in at under ten pounds, Pizzelle is an energetic, playful, and spirited Maltese. He was saved from a puppy mill bust where over 100 dogs and puppies were living in deplorable conditions. Since he has not experienced life outside of the mill, he is very shy when he initially meets new people, but he LOVES other dogs and enjoys playing with his canine friends. Once he accepts you as non-threatening, his skittish side disappears and he shows just how loving of a sweetie he can be. Pizzelle is looking for a forever home with another canine companion (or two) to provide him additional comfort and a buddy to wrestle with.
