Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Meet Booker, our sweet little Maltese/Shih Tzu mix! This 5-year-old, 15-pound, neutered male is looking for a loving home where he can truly thrive. He is heartworm positive so he’ll need to go through treatment for that but, he's a medium energy guy and ready to enjoy life to the fullest. He's a true lap dog at heart, craving love and snuggles and being with his people, but he needs a bit of guidance and patience to adjust to his new surroundings. He adores chew toys and playing with other dogs, so having a confident companion dog in his new home could be a great benefit. Mostly potty trained, he does need some help working on his separation anxiety. Found as a stray in Texas, he'll be arriving in Minnesota on July 27, eager to find a new family to call his own. If you're looking for a loving, playful, and cuddly companion who just needs a little extra help settling in, this sweet boy might be the perfect addition to your family! Booker is from Texas.  One big thing you should know is they are heartworm positive - but please don’t let that scare you away from adopting them! After they undergo treatment for their condition they will be completely healthy again, and heartworm is not a contagious disease. Because they need treatment, they are available exclusively through Ruff Start’s Foster to Adopt (FTA) program. Click here to learn more about this program. They will get heartworm treatment at one of Ruff Start’s partner veterinary clinics in St. Cloud, so their foster will need to be comfortable getting them to and from the appointments. Treatment will consist of three injections: the first will be roughly 30 days after they enter rescue. Then, the second and third injections will happen 30 days after the first. When they are undergoing treatment, they should be on activity ‘restrictions’ which just means they should relax in their crate or cuddle with you.   Click here to learn more about heartworm disease, which is transmitted by mosquitoes. If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract. To learn more about Ruff Start’s adoption process and the care our foster animals receive, please visit our How to Adopt page. If you are unable to adopt but want to help this animal and others in our care, you can donate to support the medical and veterinary needs of all Ruff Start Rescue animals.   Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.July 26, 2024, 5:57 pm

Story
Hi everyone! I’m Brodie. I’m a Maltese mix that came into rescue two years ago.    My cons: I am slow to warm up, however, once I get to trust you, I love to be on your lap and will sleep with you. I bark at new people, dogs and cats. I let people pet me if they come down to my level. I also have seizures and take daily medication for this. My medication is cheap (you can get a three month supply for $20 with the Good Rx app!)    My pros: I’m a small dog that is housebroken and just love to be around my people. I love to chew on my toys and if you throw a ball or toy, I will run after it. I walk pretty well on my leash with the occasional pull.    I was pulled from a shelter after my owner passed away. I am still learning that new people are okay. Like I said, it takes me a bit to warm up but once I do, I will follow you around forever. If you have the patience and would love to make me a part of your family, please fill out an application!   Adoption fee includes: Full veterinary exam, alter, prepaid microchip, dewormed, Rabies vaccine, DAPP vaccine, Bordetella vaccine, 4DX , flea/tick and heartworm preventative while in rescue. Adoption fee: $475.00 Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.July 26, 2024, 4:02 pm

Story
Miss Melody is a 6 year old Maltese.  I’ve been calling her Miss Melody since the first day Ipicked her up from the shelter. She is dainty, fragile, very shy and skittish.  When she first arrived home with me, she fled to my bathroom and hid in there for a few days.  Then she picked a corner of my dining room that is dark and out of the way of traffic and stayed there for weeks. Miss Melody would physically tremble when I got too close. It was heartbreaking. It has taken her more than a month to come out of the corner and she now spends time in and around her crate.  She loves to play with chew toys and she lets you know she’s excited to eat during feeding times.  She is really good around other dogs and cats. It’s the humans that make her nervous. She is so well behaved and tiny that she steals hearts wherever she goes.  I feed her in her crate as she has guarding tendencies.  She likes small, slower walks.  She is not used to being held; she is quite stiff and not a bit relaxed and cannot make eye contact with you while being held.  She requires a lot of tenderness, love, and patience.  She hasn’t been around kids so I’m not sure how she’ll do around them. She is very afraid of adults and will run and hide when you come near.  So far, any trips in the car stresses her out, and she’ll tremble. I think Miss Melody will do well in a quiet home with not a lot of expectations.  If you give her the space and patience that she needs, she will slowly gravitate towards you.  She can play with other dogs and seems happy and secure with them in that she’ll come out of her crate to play when the adults are asleep.  Miss Melody has a kind and loving heart who will, given the time and space to feel safe, show you her sweet, beautiful self and hopefully learn to trust humans again.  Adoption fee includes: Full veterinary exam, Alter, Prepaid microchip, Dewormed, Rabies vaccine (if age appropriate), Distemper combo vaccine(s) appropriate to age, Bordetella vaccine, 4DX (over 6 months of age), Flea/tick and heartworm preventative while in rescue. Adoption fee:  $550.00Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.July 26, 2024, 4:02 pm

Story
Doesn’t this sweet little face make you want to pick him up and give him a hug? Alfie is a 4 yr old, 9# male Maltese that was surrendered by a breeder that was “downsizing”. He is playful and outgoing, microchipped, vaccinated, and neutered. Walks are the highlight of his day, and when his foster mom picks up his leash he will start to happily bark (but is easily quieted). Alfie is an active dog that will need some regular form of exercise daily – walks are a great way to tire this lively little dog out, so his person should be physically able to keep up with him. Living inside a home with a family is a new experience for him. Initially he had an issue with being picked up, and would become fearful and rigid – a person’s hands seemed to frighten him. Now he is fine with being picked up and cuddled by a gentle adult. Alfie wouldn’t do well with fast moving, vocal children. Having previously lived in the kennel with dogs, he does great with them, and his ideal home would include another same size canine for companionship. Alfie does not do well alone, so his adopter should be home much of the time – perhaps someone that works from home. Coming from a breeder, he wasn’t housebroken coming into our program but his foster has a routine for him that seems to be working well – he goes out on leash at least every 4 hours (goes potty fairly quickly then), and wears a belly band when loose in the house. He has a 6x6 pen in the house, and he rarely potties in there. He has a great start on the house training, and his adopter will just need to continue until he is reliably housebroken. He sleeps quietly all night long in his indoor pen. No cat experience. Fine meeting and interacting with visitors. No problem going up and down the stairs. To give him every advantage to being successful in transitioning to a new home, we are looking for a quiet adult home, with someone that has previous dog experience. Because of the frequency he needs to go out, he would do much better in a home than he would in an apartment (a fenced yard would be great). There should be another small-medium dog in the home. Alfie will need to be groomed 4-5 times a year – be sure you can afford this ongoing expense. He just had a bath and got his nails clipped before these pictures were taken, and he was a perfect little gentleman. If you have questions, or would like to meet Alfie, please call 651-771-5662. His adoption fee is $400.

Story
Hey! My name is Stray Charles. I am incredibly sweet and affectionate, especially with the ladies. I like to show off my silky, soft hair and I don’t shed very much, so I know how much they will love me! I am more selective about men. Some are fine, while others might see my protective side.  Currently I have a few things I’m working on. I’m starting to figure out house training and I go stand at the door when I need to go potty. It takes me a while to warm up to new people so I need a family that is willing to be patient with me and I would probably do better in a quiet home without children or with older teens. I am an incredibly talented jumper so I need a home with a tall fence or to be on a tie out. This is also one of my strengths because I would do great on an outdoor adventute and obstacles won't slow me down (future agility champion?)! I’m very good in my kennel when my foster mom is out but at night I need to sleep in bed with you and I promise I will lie peacefully through the night next to you or at the end of the bed. I haven’t met any cats yet but I absolutely love every dog I meet. I’m very playful and I share my treats and bones nicely. If you are looking for a loyal side kick then I’m the little guy you are looking for. *** Because I am slow to warm up, Foster to Adopt (FTA) may be available for the right fit.  ##2002461##
