He has a bit of an “alpha” attitude and will occasionally have a low soft growl around small children. It is recommended he not be placed with any home that has pre teens or regular pack members that can over do it on attention. He is loyal and loving , he requires a lot of petting and attention. He does drool and will need help keeping his front legs cleaned often. Fill out an Adoption Application Zoey (fka Ruckus) came back to MTM after being adopted several years ago and her adopter recently passed away.    She is doing great in her foster home living with a toddler, 2 young kids and dogs of all sizes.   Zoey did take a bit to adjust. She is shy at first meeting, but once she settles in, she seeks attention and thrives off of routine. So if interested in meeting her, please understand, she does not show well, but given some time and patience, she will come around and show great affection.    She has begun to engage the other dogs in play and loves to spend time outside in the yard. She does well being left alone with the other dogs, with no concern of messes or destructive behavior.     She does pull on the leash and will need some help with that, but that too needs to be made part of her routine. Zoey is a low to medium energy dog and is content to just hang out. She will pick a favorite bed and that becomes her spot.    Zoey does well riding in the car, was well behaved at the vets office and doesn't mind a nail trim as long as shes being scratched at the same time.   She is potty trained and will go to the door or even come wake you if she needs to go out.    Zoey has been fully updated on vaccines and received a dental. HISTORY: One owner who did not provide basic medical care so Izzy lived many year with out of control skin issues, ear infections, UTI’s, etc. PERSONALITY: Izzy is a sweet, friendly girl that loves meeting new people and welcoming them into the house. She loves attention and affection and will lean in hard for pets and ear scratches. She tends to spend her days snoozing away but when she gets the zoomies she takes them seriously and this girl can move despite her age.  She lives peacefully with a 60lb male mixed breed but is reactive when seeing dogs out on a walk. Izzy is a bit fearful of fireworks and thunderstorms and will sometimes get spooked by loud noises. Izzy likes things to happen on her own personal timeline and can be stubborn when they don’t. She will test limits by whining and carrying on (dancing around, stomping her feet, wagging her tail furiously while staring at you) to try to get her way. She’s learning that those things don’t work in our house but it’s hard not to laugh at her antics. She’ll do it to the other dog in the house too when he’s laying in a bed that she wants. This beautiful boy is a sweet and lovable friend who wants nothing more than to love and be loved. He’s come a long way since he first came to us. Initially seriously underweight at only 80 pounds with signs of neglect – he was likely locked in a crate with no padding for much of his life. Today he’s 104 pounds of sweet goofiness. He loves to nap, chew on his toys, go for walks, and thump his tail on the ground whenever you enter the room, or speak in a high voice… or say his name.  Likes: Moose is especially fond of people. He’s never met a person he doesn’t instantly love, and the feeling seems to be mutual. He wants to say hi to every neighbor he sees on his walks, and they’re all eager to oblige. Every vet, vet tech, or crew at the day care he occasionally goes to adore him. Moose also loves to chase and pounce on his big indestructible ball and is especially fond of chewing on his Nylabone. He’s also very fond of small backyard creatures – birds, squirrels, rabbits. Great news if you have a pesky groundhog in your yard, but you do need to be aware and on guard while walking him. Dislikes: Moose does not like to be left alone. His history of neglect and being left in a crate has led to separation anxiety. He is showing signs of growing confidence, however. He frequently seeks out his crate during the day to nap and he sleeps in an open crate every night in the bedroom. He is also comfortable going into another room and lying down by himself – he’s less and less of a Velcro dog all the time. Personality: Moose is a love bug. He has a very sweet personality and wants to please. He can be very playful and make one laugh out loud as he twists his big body into all different shapes for belly rubs. He’s pretty chill in the house – he loves to nap and chew on toys and doesn’t get into things or chew things he shouldn’t. Though he does seem to find the random sock! He’s very excited to welcome visitors – giving everyone a big “hello” and is then content to chew on his bone. Energy level: Moose has a few short bursts of playful energy during the day and is content with three short walks a day. His current foster doesn't have a fenced yard, but if they did, he’d likely only need a morning and evening walk, with a little playtime in the yard. Not good with: Given Moose’s interest in small backyard creatures, he’d likely not do well with cats or small dogs. He once lived with his older sister, but it's unclear if he’s had any other experience with dogs and he has not been tested with other dogs. Housetrained: Moose is completely housetrained. In fact, he seems to have an enormous bladder! Crate trained: Moose is re-learning to not fear a crate. Fence: Moose would do well with a fenced yard so he can freely play with his big indestructible ball and have plenty of safe space for sunbathing. Leash walking: Moose loves going for walks and he's been worked with quite a bit to mitigate his high prey drive. He’s learned a lot! He is walking at a heel, sitting whenever we stop walking, and beginning again with the “OK” command. He still needs work to keep from pulling when he sees a squirrel because he is very strong, but he’s getting better every day at staying more focused when he gets distracted. Hot dogs are a big motivator! Medical issues: Moose had a corneal ulcer resulting from an errant eyelash. It has healed completely. He will be checked again in two months to make sure it hasn’t returned. While initially underweight, Moose is now at a good weight of 104. The best home for Moose: Moose would do best in a home where people are home most of the day. He is an excellent work-from-home companion and really likes to be with people as much as possible. He would be great with older kids to snuggle and play with and with dog parents who can patiently continue to work on training. He is such a good boy and wants so much to have a home with people he can love. Fill out an Adoption Application HEADLINER: Goofy, Loyal, Loving Mastiff Looking for Big Dog People and Lots of Space HISTORY: Adley was adopted in April of 2024 from a no-kill rescue that saved him from Montgomery County Animal Services. He was kenneled and having trouble finding a foster or adopters because he is very big and has a lot of energy - at the time he had just turned 2 years old. He went to a home with 3 other dogs and immediately acclimated into the pack. He was lucky enough to have another jumbo in the house to play rough with, but he also demonstrated his ability to be gentle and friendly with all sorts of dogs due to the other 2 dogs being a super senior staffy (currently 14.5 years old) and a young Chihuahua mix. He is similarly adaptive with people - when people enter the home he gets very excited and is prone to jumping but does respond well to correction and doesn’t do this with his owners. He is very gentle with children and older folks, and when introduced to new people outside the home is extremely gentle and tends to melt hearts with his innocent eyes and tendency to lean on people to tell them he likes them (he likes everyone). While out walking he does occasionally get stimulated and wants to wrestle which, again, is easily corrected especially with an experienced Mastiff handler. He responds best to a combination of verbal and touch commands. He does not need a crate and has not been crated since being adopted, is fully house trained and does not mark whatsoever. Occasionally he has been mildly destructive with things like a welcome mat and picture frames when left alone, but it has been very infrequent and he politely leaves the photos intact and prefers to just chew up the wood frames. Loves chew toys and sticks, and is always ready for a treat. Eats his food when it’s served and doesn’t steal from his pack mates. Is happy to sleep anywhere you let him - floor, dog bed, couch, or your bed. He’s just happy to be loved and have a home. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond his current owner’s control, Adley needs a new home ASAP for both his and his owner’s best interests moving forward. It is breaking his owner’s heart to have to rehome him, but finding the perfect new home is his top priority. PERSONALITY: Adley is everything you want in a dog. He’s happy, goofy, extremely loving, and sensitive to his people’s feelings. He is dog friendly with every dog he has ever met and loves children and older people just as much as grown men he can rough house with. He is VERY strong, especially on a leash, so it’s important that any prospective adopters understand how to handle a dog of his size and power. He is stimulated by other dogs and animals while leashed, so knowing various redirection strategies is imperative. When off leash, he has good recall (assuming he isn’t fixating on something like a deer). He has no instinct to run off. He is about as close as it gets to a turnkey pet Mastiff given his age and the fact he’s still working out of his puppy stage. FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: Getting attention is his favorite activity by far, but he also loves chewing on toys and sticks and he loves the opportunity to run in open space. He gets 2-3 miles a day of leashed walking, and currently lives adjacent to woods where he gets a few opportunities everyday to do some sniffing and exploring. MEDICAL ISSUES: None. Very healthy and happy. WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST KIND OF HOME: A home with another dog would be great for him. He is very social and another dog would certainly be helpful for when he is left home. A yard (or even more outdoor space) would be absolutely perfect for him and would decrease his need for the long walks he has been getting everyday, but the walks are also extremely beneficial for reinforcing training and bonding with his people. He has lived with a child for the last nearly 2 years and loves it, and he would be an amazing pet for a kid to grow up with. Because of his remarkable power and strength, it would be highly recommended that two able-bodied adults be in the home, especially adults with previous experience and knowledge of handling this type of animal. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Adley is an amazing dog and deserves the opportunity to be in the right situation. Application Fees, Adoption Donations and Rescue Policy: Please know that 100% of our fees and donations pay for the costs of rescuing dogs. These include but are not limited to pull fees from shelters, veterinary examinations, vaccinations, medications and care, microchips, neuter/spay surgeries, heartworm treatments, behavior evaluations, and foster care, as needed. Important notes before applying. Approved adopters must have their primary residence in one of the following states: Delaware, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, and parts of North Carolina and Kentucky. You must be at least 21 years of age to apply and legally sign our contract for adoption. Applications must be completed by the homeowner.  We do not adopt giant breed dogs to renters. If you are renting, and you are applying to adopt a dog that is not a giant breed, permission to adopt an animal must be obtained from the landlord or property owner. We do not adopt giant breed dogs to homes with children under 6 years of age. Homes with children should have a fenced yard. Applications will be denied if anyone residing in the household has a record indicating drug/alcohol abuse, theft, or violence. Pets currently in the applicant's home must have a history of appropriate veterinary care. Homes with intact dogs will not be approved for adoption.  Proof of any of the following exceptions is required: The intact dog is a working member of a law enforcement, or search and rescue/recovery team. The intact dog is registered under the auspices of the American Kennel Club and is actively being shown. A veterinarian has determined the sterilization procedure would harm the intact dog.  We believe in Force Free Training Methods and do not approve of methods or devices using pain or force to control the dog, or to deter undesirable behavior.  Homes with highly varnished steps must have carpeting, securely fixed stair treads, or a non-skid surface. **We encourage you to remediate potential safety issues while your application is under review, prior to the home visit. &#226&#128&#139Any inside steps to which the dog(s) have access, must have carpeting, securely fixed stair treads, or a non-skid surface. Homes with highly varnished floors must have non-slip area rugs or mats wherever your animal walks or rests frequently.  **Puppy Adoption Policy** To ensure proper house training and socialization, puppies will only be adopted to homes where an adult will not be away more than an hour per day, per month of age of the puppy, up to 6 months. Certain large-breed dogs should not be sterilized prior to 12 - 18 months of age.  If you adopt an intact puppy, you will sign an adoption contract agreeing to have the dog sterilized at your expense at the time your veterinarian recommends.
