Meet Daisy, the 4 year old female rottweiler! She was surrendered due to no fault of her own (housing). Her previous guardian reports that she is house trained and would stand by the door to let her family know she had to go out to potty. She has not lived with other animals previously. She used to go to the groomers monthly and was tolerant for bathing and nail trims. Her favorite things to play with are tennis balls and tug-of-war with rope style toys. She has been around children ages 8 years and up and sometimes cannot contain her exuberance and will jump up in the excitement. Sturdy children are recommended in her next home. Daisy knows “sit” , “down” and “shake”! She has been interested in jumping right into vehicles to join people on their adventures. Daisy has played with other dogs since her arrival at the Shelter. A canine companion in the home may be a fit after a meet ‘n greet!The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

HI - I'M PHOENIX! I'm a handsome and healthy 9-1/2-year-old Rottie-Dobie mix in need of a foster or forever home. I lost my previous foster home due to no fault of mine, and I really miss having people around to snuggle and take me for walks and other outings. A little bit about me: I was rescued from a shelter a couple years ago, where I was a shelter favorite, and am currently waiting for someone to adopt me. I weigh about 80 lbs. Despite my age, I am active and I'm a very loving dog. I'll do well with an active person or people who can take me for walks and hikes. I have many positive traits - I am affectionate, I walk well on a leash, and I am a loyal and sweet dog. I will be your best friend for life. I also prefer to have my person or people around, but that can be expected of most dogs! I am not a barker unless it is warranted. I can also be a bit protective of my people and our property, which can be a good thing. While I get along with dogs I know (especially female dogs around my size), I can be reactive on a leash toward dogs I don't know. However, I really do like female dogs - I currently love to hang out and go on walks with my girlfriend Darla, a Doberman. And I love human attention and affection - I am affectionate and caring. Waldo was found as a stray in November 4 and was scheduled to be euthanized on December 2 despite being the friendliest cuddliest little meatball you will ever meet. My wife and I pulled him off the kill list so that he could have another shot at life and he is already becoming a wonderful part of our dog pack. We would keep him but we already have three dogs and don't have space for another. Waldo is about two years old neutered potty trained and absolutely LOVES playing with other dogs–he's as wiggly and happy as they come. He imprints quickly on people and becomes an instant lover–every time my wife and I sit down on our couch or lie down in our bed he comes up to cuddle with us / sleep next to us. He is just starting to learn his name–he comes when called in the house but he hasn't been off leash in the park and we are just beginning recall and obedience training. He is very submissive and responds well to corrections from other dogs and has already learned to walk in our pack. He is very treat motivated and already knows sit as well as paw! Waldo still has the playful friendliness and eager-to-please demeanor of a puppy so having an adopter who will help continue to socialize and train him will be key!
