Story
Gus is a 4.5 year old mastiff/rotweiler mix. He a wonderful companion animal and has given our family loyalty, cuddles, and goofiness. He is a low-energy dog who loves to snooze, but also enjoys moderate walks and hikes. Gus needs a new home because he can aggressively resource guard random objects (e.g. a child's toy or a kleenex). We cannot keep him in our house with three very small children who may be inclined to follow him if he takes a forbidden toy. Gus would be great in an adult-only home or a family with older children who can understand and manage this behavior. Gus is great with kids, adults, and other dogs. He is trained on the basics and walks well on a leash. He is neutered and up to date on all vaccinations. It is with an extremely heavy heart that we have to find a new home for this loving dog. But he will be a fantastic addition to any home without small children who wants a loving companion and can manage his occasional resource guarding.

Story
Update Ruger is now at the Santa Cruz Animal Shelter. Ruger is 7 years old, ~100lbs neutered Rottweiler-mix. He is a sweet, mature dog who is doing extremely well with the foster home's younger dog and is remarkably tolerant of his puppy energy. He has been living as a companion dog and is accustomed to having a person of his own.Ruger does chase cats. He has not injured one, but because of his size and interest in chasing them, he needs a cat-free home. His current foster has three cats, so she cannot safely keep him long-term. Ruger is neutered. Vaccination and veterinary records are being located/confirmed. His foster can provide additional information about his temperament and behavior as she gets to know him.Ruger came into foster care through no fault of his own. His owner was unexpectedly hospitalized and subsequently moved into assisted living and is no longer able to care for him.

:sparkles:Adopt Diva :sparkles: Diva is an approximately 9/10 year old Rottweiler with a heart every bit as big as she is. With her gentle nature and laid back personality, Diva is happiest enjoying life’s simple pleasures. A tasty snack, a leisurely stroll, time spent exploring all the neighborhood scents, and a cozy spot next to her favorite people are all she needs to make her tail wag. She’s the kind of dog who brings a sense of calm wherever she goes. At 109 pounds, Diva is working toward a healthier weight to help keep her senior joints comfortable, but don’t let her size fool you! she’s easy on leash, easy to love, and incredibly easy to have around. She prefers a slower pace and would thrive in a home that appreciates quiet companionship and relaxed adventures. While Diva can be neutral with other dogs, she would thrive as the only pet in the home. She does best with males and calm/neutral females after proper introductions over time. No small dogs or kitties for Diva! After years of giving her love to others, it’s Diva’s turn to be cherished. She’s ready to spend her golden years with a family who will adore her as much as she deserves. If you’re looking for a gentle, loving companion to share your couch, your walks, and your heart, Diva is waiting to meet you. Story
Meet Phillip, the mixed breed boy. We suspect he has some Doberman pinscher in him but he is only 20lbs, so likely mixed with something smaller. A good Samaritan found in as a stray on the side of the road. Understandably, Phillip was a little scared from the whole situation and needed time to acclimate to the Shelter environment and staff. After a few days, he showed his soft sweet side with staff and volunteers. He is not confident about walking on leash and will need a patient, dog savvy adopter to help him acclimate to that skill. To help with potty training in the meantime, a home with a securely fenced backyard is recommended. Phillip met a dog around his side and was unsure but interested in her. A home with a mellow dog may be a fit after a meet and greet at the Shelter. A home with cats may be a fit with a slow, thoughtful introduction.Phillip is available for pre-adoption. Come meet him, fall in love and take him home after his neuter surgery. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Lovey Dovey lives up to her name and is looking for a forever home with a cozy lap to snuggle. She has been living happily in a foster home with a resident senior dog and two adult humans:“Dovey brings lots of joy and laughter into our home with her sweet nature and goofy personality. She starts each day giving our dog kisses and greets us with beautiful songs, hugs and more kisses. We work full time and shes fine being left alone to roam free in the house. At the end of the day she welcomes us back with more jubilance and at night becomes the dog equivalent of a weighted blanket cuddling on the couch. She does great on car rides and is potty trained via walks and yard breaks. She gets excited for walks and is very strong on leash with a drive towards squirrels. She gets amped about fetch and destroying stuffies so sometimes we need to help her set limits. Though she’s a lively 11, she does enjoy her senior moments too like an afternoon snooze in a dog bed or sun bathing in the yard. Dovey was restless in the shelter kennel and does not like to be contained in kennels, behind baby gates, or behind closed bedroom doors. If you’re ready for endless love and affection this big lap dog is the girl for you.”Dovey is selective with her dog friends (liking some but not others). This is common as dogs age. Adopters should be mindful that she may not enjoy high traffic dog areas like dog parks or dog beaches. Any resident dogs should meet prior to adoption to see how the two get along. Dovey would do best in a home free of felines. Dovey is looking for a retirement home to thrive in. Could that be with you? Her adoption fee is sponsored thanks to the Silver Whisker’s Society, a fund aiming to get often overlooked seniors out of the Shelter! The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption.
