Please read the bio in full for answers to your questions. In the event you have a question that is not covered in the bio, please email info@seniordoghaven.org. If interested in adopting, please complete an adoption application which can be found at https://seniordoghaven.org/adoption-process/. Please note that because all our dogs live in foster homes, we are unable to set up meetings with a dog unless we have a completed adoption application on file. Adoptions must be about within an hour of Wilmington, DE for our volunteers to be able to conduct an in-person home visit. Meet Coco Bean! Coco Bean is a 10 year old shih tzu mix who found herself in a local shelter, where she was left by her owners when they had to move to a place that didn’t allow dogs. “Great with dogs, cats, and kids” was written on her owner surrender form. Unfortunately, shelter workers didn’t see that side of her. They saw a terrified little dog who hid in the corner of her cage and screamed when anyone tried to touch her. They managed to get her out of the cage and off for a walk, and she started to open up. She loved being outside on leash, and even allowed them to pet her. However, this was not enough of an improvement, and she was time stamped due to her behavior. We were heartbroken at the thought of her not getting a chance, so we brought her to a foster home where we learned who Coco Bean really is. She is a silly, playful, happy girl who LOVES her humans. She really enjoys walks, as well as napping on the couch with her family. She rides nicely in the car, always ready for an adventure. She will nibble your shoes, while you’re wearing them, if she wants attention. She will then flop over, and show you her belly. And if you dare ignore this plea for attention, she’ll wave her front legs at you, clearly saying PET ME HUMAN! She does great with other dogs and has lived with dog savvy cats. She has met humans young and old and loves them all, especially if they are willing to give her some attention. She is housebroken but will likely have some accidents when she first goes to her new home as she figures out how to let you know she has to potty. As much as she loves people, and belly rubs, she will need some time to adjust to a new home. She may spend some time by herself, learning that she is in a safe place. Her adopters will need to be patient with her and let her come to them. We promise she’s worth the wait! It doesn’t take her long to want to be with her people. She may do better in a home with other animals (dog or cat) but she may be fine without them with patient people. While Coco was in rescue, she was spayed, and had 2 cherry eye surgeries (the first one didn’t fully take). She also had a benign cyst removed from the side of her face. She needs some eyedrops daily, and she is also on medications for anxiety we had started when she first came to rescue. We think they should continue when she’s adopted, but once she’s settled her new family can discuss weaning them with their vet. Each eye drop is $60 a bottle, but they last a while. One is once a day, one is twice a day. Her medications are around $60 a month, but as we said she can likely be weaned off once she settles into her forever home. Coco Bean is a sweet, sweet little girl. She has had some rough times, and just needs a safe place where she can continue to thrive and grow. Could that be with you?

Story
Sully is being fostered in PA. Due to his age, he will not be placed in a home with young children, however he is great with people. This little man is Sully and he will need a very special adopter. Sully is at least 15 years old and has some health issues but is so go-with-the-flow and is trusting and finds comfort in any gentle person that it was decided he deserved to have the chance at finding his perfect home for whatever time he has left so he can have 1:1 cuddles for the rest of his time. Sully is gentle, quiet, loves to sleep and enjoys meal time and cuddles. He needs to be carried outside to go potty because he just doesn't look for the door, and is fairly predictable with his schedule and gives his foster mom plenty of signs to get him outside after standing up from a nap. He also wears a belly band very well, if needed. Sully has kidney disease and, therefore, cannot be put under anesthesia to have a dental or his eyes removed but, fortunately, although his teeth are not the best, they are not the worst the vet has seen by any means. If Sully didn't have kidney issues he could have his eyes removed but his issues are managed well with long-term antibiotic drops 2-3 times per day. He is currently on the eye drops and a very inexpensive medicine to help take the stress of his kidneys. The best family for Sully will consist of someone who is home a lot to give him tons of attention and who can carry him outside to potty (he weighs about 15 pounds and is very good when being carried). They will also be comfortable giving him his eye drops that he takes very well and will understand that he will need more vet checks than a younger dog. Sully is very excited to find a forever home and he hopes your home is the one for him! Transport is available to his new home but a home that can be reached from central PA in one day would be best for this senior boy. Please ask if you are unsure about the distance. BDRA has voted against the use of electrical fencing effective immediately.

Story
MEET PEPPER! This sweet, low-key girl is named Pepper! Pepper joined City of Elderly Love after being surrendered to Philly's animal control shelter along with 8 other small dogs. Their owner was no longer equipped to care for so many dogs but fortunately, all of them found placement with rescues; two of which joined ours! Pepper is somewhere around 12 years old and appears to be a Shih Tzu mix; around 14 lbs. Despite not wanting to play much, Pepper is an A+ snuggler and loves attention. She'll happily nap in your lap if you let her. She is blind but once she knows you're there, she'll ask for pets and give you tiny kisses whenever possible. Pepper loves to go for (slow) walks, is a great eater, loves to explore her foster family's backyard, and to lay in the sun. She'll even do a little dance when she's able to go outside during nice weather! So while she's a low-key gal, she has her own sweet and quirky personality once she's comfortable in her surroundings. She's currently living with other dogs and cats and gets along with them well! Pepper is blind due to age-related cataracts and lifelong chronic dry eye (KCS) so receives daily over the counter lubricating eye drops. She also doesn't hear well (or at all) but has no problem letting you know what she'd like. Pepper is housebroken and great about letting you know that she needs to go out. Because little dogs have little bladders, she does need to go out every few hours. She's great about using pee pads in her crate or pen while you're at work or if you need to be away from the house for a while. Pepper prefers to sleep in the same room as her people so she knows they're nearby. She has been diagnosed with mild chronic kidney disease, not uncommon for aging dogs which doesn't require further treatment at this time but should be . Overall, this sweet, easy going girl would be great for any family looking to spoil a special little senior dog in her sunset years. She'll happily repay you with cheek kisses! Pepper is available for adoption through City of Elderly Love! She is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. Interested in adopting her? Meet Cora, the delightful 7-year-old Shih Tzu on the hunt for her forever home—and she comes with a condition: she requires a furry companion! With her friendly demeanor, she's already formed a strong bond with her foster parent, and she's eager to extend that love to her new family. While she's still mastering leash manners and potty training, Cora's enthusiasm for learning knows no bounds, and she'll flourish with a patient owner by her side. A fenced yard would be a bonus for her spirited adventures. If you're ready to welcome Cora and her furry friend into your home, submit your application today!
