Please read the bio in full for answers to common questions. If you have a question not covered here, please email info@seniordoghaven.org. If interested in adopting, please complete an adoption application at https://seniordoghaven.org/adoption-process/. Because all of our dogs live in foster homes, meet-and-greets are scheduled only after a completed application is received. Adoptions must be within a reasonable distance of Wilmington, DE so our volunteers can conduct an in-person home visit. Meet Bubbles Bubbles is a 10-year-old, 11-pound Shih Tzu mix who may be a senior, but she certainly doesn’t act like one! She is very mobile, enjoys her daily walks, and has a medium energy level. Bubbles is fully housebroken, crate trained, walks well on a leash, and can comfortably navigate stairs. She can also be happy in a home without a fenced yard. Bubbles came to the shelter after her elderly owner passed away and her family was unable to care for her. Since arriving in foster care, she has taken some time to settle in and learn that she is safe. She is now showing her sweet side and absolutely loves her people. She enjoys cuddling and being a lap dog—but Bubbles is also very clear about needing her personal space. She does best when affection is offered on her terms and when her boundaries are respected. Her foster family has found that consistent rules, structure, and gentle boundaries help her feel comfortable and successful. Bubbles gets along well with other dogs and cats. She is not recommended for a home with children because she can become nippy when she feels that her personal space is being invaded. Her ideal family will understand canine body language, respect her boundaries, and allow her to have quiet time when she wants it. She is minimally vocal, although she will let you know when someone is at the door! At night, Bubbles sleeps peacefully in her crate beside her foster’s bed. Bubbles has received extensive veterinary care since coming into rescue. She had a dental with five teeth removed, was spayed, and had a small mammary mass removed. The mass was cancerous, but it was completely removed with clear margins. Bubbles is looking for an adult home that will continue providing the structure and boundaries she needs while giving her plenty of love, daily walks, and—perhaps most importantly—respect for her personal space. In return, she will happily be your little walking buddy and cuddle companion.

Story
Kenny is being fostered in VA.Kenny is NOT BLIND!Kenny arrived at rescue in June 2026 like a little spark — small, scruffy, and full of hope. Today, hes a joyful, wiggly, toy chewing, rope tugging, people loving pup who lights up his foster home. This 13 pound, one year old shih tzu (maybe with a dash of mystery mix) was found as a stray in Ohio. After the shelter suspected concerns about his vision, he traveled to Virginia to join the Blind Dog Rescue — and surprised everyone by seeing just fine! What he really needed was comfort, care, and a fresh start.Kenny settled in quickly with the resident dogs and is learning the art of polite play. Hes housetrained, crate trained, and sleeps quietly through the night. He trots beautifully on leash unless a squirrel dares to appear, in which case Kenny becomes a tiny, determined explorer. Hes a great car buddy, too.His favorite foods? Purina One with gravy for breakfast and dinner and then, for snacks, he enjoys peanut butter, tiny dog treats, and, his favorite: chicken jerky! Hes a shy eater at mealtime who waits for his humans to step away before he begins.Kenny has been thoroughly vetted: ear infections treated, Giardia resolved, skin improving (still a bit flaky), bloodwork and vision normal, teeth lovely. The vet staff adored him.His front legs are a bit bow-legged and he has congenital hip dysplasia with a left cruciate injury but, after a Librela injection, hes moving much more comfortably and with better stamina. During the first couple of weeks in his foster home, he sometimes favored his left leg but he has not been noted to do that anymore even before the first Librela injection he began to use both hind legs symmetrically. Hell need monthly Librela and an adopter willing to partner with their vet to address any mobility issues if they arise in the future. He can manage a few steps but should be carried on full staircases. And, when carried, his foster mother said he feels like a squishy teddy bear. And usually she gets a kiss from Kenny when he is in her arms.Kennys one big nope: cats. He becomes intensely focused on the foster homes cat and wants to chase, so he must be adopted into a cat free home. He hasnt lived with children and so should join adults or families with older kids.Kenny is still a puppy — bright, sweet, and ready to learn. He needs a home with structure, patience, and lots of love. If youre looking for a joyful little companion with a huge heart, Kenny is waiting for you.BDRA has voted against the use of electrical fencing effective immediately.

Story
Shorty is a spunky sprite that loves being outside and enjoys walks with his nose down and grunting like a little piglet while he sniffs everything. He thinks he can catch squirrels but doesn't understand how they just disappear! He enjoys spending time with my grandchildren and snuggles with them every chance he gets. He is initially fearful of men, until they get down on his level and once, he sniffs them, then he is all wiggles. He is also skittish around other dogs. He doesn't mind being groomed and has a beautiful full tail. He is house trained and will tell you when he has to go out. He is a super sweet dog and would be a great companion for a just about anyone, single, or family.
