Story
You may have heard of Apple. She became famous when she was found in a DC trash chute, after her prior owner apparently tried to throw her out. Apple was malnourished, anemic, covered with mats, and unable to use her hind legs. But Apple is a fighter, and she has not only survived, but thrived. She greets each new day with joy, excited to sniff around in the grass, lay on soft beds, and enjoy plenty of treats and maybe a pup cup. Although Apple's back legs are of not much help in walking -- seemingly deformed since birth -- Apple can get around suprisingly quickly, mostly using her front legs and sheer determination. She does need to be carried up and down any stairs, but such diva treatment is only appropriate for such a media darling. She is very playful and loves toys. She approaches people eagerly, hoping for plenty of pets, and will let you know if you are shirking your responsibilities. Apple screams when she is happy. She screams when you come home. She screams when dinner is served and, with equal conviction, when it is not. She screams because love, in her small and radiant body, simply does not fit quietly. There is something almost operatic about it ~ this bright, unfiltered sound pouring out of a creature who weighs less than a bag of flour yet feels everything at cathedral volume. Apple can co-exist comfortably, if not quietly, with dogs and cats. She is happy to accept pets from older children but is too fragile to be a good playmate for younglings. She is substantially housetrained, although it's worth having a potty pad available just in case. She's fine going for rides in the car or being left home on her own. She sleeps well through the night and is happy to wear her pajamas at bedtime. Apple's ideal home will have a fenced yard, as she can't quite figure out how leash walks work. She wants plenty of snuggles and treats. She would be happy to be the only pet in the household, to maximize attention, or to have a small dog friend that she can play and nap with. Due to her talkative nature, she is not a good fit for an apartment or condo. Apple is approx 7 years old and 9 lbs. Fostered in Rockville, MD Please apply at mirishaven.org

Story
The phrase “big dog in a small dog body” was apparently invented specifically for him. King is an 11-year-old Yorkie mix with endless personality packed into under 10 pounds. He loves stuffies, treats, chasing tennis balls, chasing people, and making sure everyone in the house knows he’s having a great time. He’s energetic, playful, deeply affectionate, and fully convinced he is much larger than he actually is. One of King’s favorite games is fetch. There’s just one small issue: after having all of his teeth removed, he can no longer pick up the tennis ball to bring it back. So instead, he proudly stands over it and barks until someone helps him continue the game. Honestly, it’s impossible not to love him. King recently had full dental extractions, which means he’ll need a soft food diet going forward. He’s currently recovering beautifully and doesn’t let his toothless smile slow him down for a second. He would thrive in a calm home where he can get plenty of attention, playtime, and snuggles. King can be a little vocal and somewhat anxious when left alone, but his foster describes him as incredibly sweet. He enjoys other dogs, especially his sister Queen. King is looking for someone who will embrace all of his quirks, toss the tennis ball again and again, and love him exactly as he is: loud, joyful, scruffy, and full of heart. We just welcomed bonded yorkies King and Queen. They are possibly brother and sister. King is a neutered male 12 years old 6 lbs. fostered in Alexandria, VA please apply at mirishaven.org

Story
Meet Queen. A proper little lady with the softest heart. Queen is a 10-year-old Yorkie who seems to have mastered the art of quiet companionship. She loves being held, spoken to gently, and tucked safely into your lap while the world goes on around her. Her favorite place is wherever her people are — especially if there’s a sunny spot by the front door and her brother King nearby. While King brings the chaos, Queen brings the calm. She walks beautifully on leash, adores affection, and carries herself with the quiet dignity of a tiny grandmother who would like everyone to settle down and behave. Her foster describes her as incredibly sweet, gentle, and reserved in the very best way. Queen recently had full dental extractions, so she’ll need a soft food diet moving forward. She also has two nodules on her chest that will need follow-up care. Through it all, she remains calm, loving, and endlessly trusting. Most importantly, Queen and King are deeply bonded and must be adopted together. They sleep side by side, keep each other company, and move through life as a pair. If you’re looking for loud and flashy, Queen probably isn’t your girl. But if you’re looking for a quiet soul who wants nothing more than love, comfort, and a safe place to rest her head, Queen is waiting for you. We just welcomed bonded duo King and Queen. Queen is 12 years old spayed female yorkie. fostered in Alexandria, VA please apply at mirishaven.org

Story
Meet Bebe! If you appreciate honesty, independence, and a dog who knows exactly who she is, Bebe might be your girl. Bebe is a strong, independent woman. She doesn’t enjoy a lot of doting, but she will occasionally offer gentle kisses when she feels like it. She can’t see a lick, yet confidently toddles through her spaces, rotating between strategically placed donut beds (one per room is her recommendation; she does not believe in crating and has issued a formal policy against it). She navigates her foster home without any trouble, but would do best in a blind-savvy household without small children. Otherwise she’s a very chill little bug ~ cozy, well-fed, and content. The vet suspects the bald strip along her spine came from long periods in the same clothing or harnesses. She has discovered that at Miri’s your skin gets to breathe, and you get a nice clean outfit every morning! Sometimes a lovely outfit is medically necessary for moral. And she prefers to sleep in a bed right next to yours so you can reach down and pet her at bedtime. (Best if she doesn't sleep in bed with you, as she could fall off the edge.) Bebe came to Miri's with a plethora of medical issues, and we've been helping her fight them one by one. She had anemia, elevated kidney values, a high white blood cell count, an enlarged heart indicating heart disease, a collapsing trachea, dry eyes, mature cataracts that left her blind, limited hearing, and severe dental disease. She's now doing fabulously on a renal diet with supplements, multiple medications to address infections and coughing, and twice daily eye drops. Bebe does her business outside just fine, though it’s best to keep a diaper on her overnight and first thing in the morning - she’s small and simply can’t hold it that long. She’s also a “sometimes poo happens” kind of girl, so if that’s a dealbreaker, she may not be the right fit. Around here we expect that sort of thing, so she’s in very good company. If you are someone who enjoys cooking, this is a bonus, as she enjoys hanging around the kitchen and soaking in the smells. This is one of her greatest pleasures! Just be sure not to step on her as she tries her best to get underfoot. Bebe enjoys walks and exploring back yards. She will need to be carried up/down any stairs, and gates may be needed to keep her from wandering too much around the house. She would do best in a calm home with another dog, people that are home a fair amount to supervise her and give her regular potty breaks. Bebe is finally ready to start her next chapter and believes fully that it will be her best yet. Could it be with you? Bebe is approximately 12 years old and 6 lbs. Story
Meet Ashton and his sister Lacey! These two little souls have been through so much, but never once let it dim their spirits. Ashton and Lacey had a loving home until their owner's health declined. Suddenly the rug was pulled out from under them and they found themselves in an overwhelming shelter with no idea what happened to the life they'd always known. Fortunately, Miri's pulled them and they have settled right in to their foster home. Ashton and Lacey may be the most laid back, loving, and cuddliest dogs you'll ever meet. Ashton is your loyal sidekick - always ready to tag along for errands, work days, and helping with chores (moral support included). Lacey is your cozy companion - naps, snuggles, and Netflix marathons are her love language. They adore going on stroller safaris where they can take in all the exciting sights, sounds, and smells without even lifting a paw. They are also leash trained and enjoy exploring the yard at their own (leisurely) pace. When they're not cruising the neighborhood in their wheels, these two LOVE snoozing. Naps during the day, deep slumbers at night - and their favorite way to sleep is snuggled up with their human(s). Lacey especially loves to sleep in, so if you're not an early riser either, she's your girl. She also loves being tucked in under a blanket while snoozing on the couch, and smiles the cutest little smile when she's feeling content. Ashton and Lacey both get along well with other dogs, ride well in the car, and are happy staying home alone while their humans are out. They are looking for a family who will be home with them most of the time, loves snuggling and stroller walks, and has a fenced in yard. They can navigate steps but sometimes need help, so they hope their forever home won't have too many. Ashton has chronic dry eye which is easy to manage with eye ointment. He's been drinking lots of water and peeing often since he arrived, so we're working with our vets to determine the cause. In the meantime, he's taking thyroid medication and is happy to rock belly bands given how often he needs to go. Lacey is fully housetrained and a huge foodie who loves mealtime and snacktime and treat time. A huge Swiftie, she’s tracking the countdown to Taylor’s next album and has claimed her favorite bed as her listening throne until October 3rd arrives. Cozy, sweet, and completely unbothered. Ashton and Lacey never miss a meal, never miss a cuddle, and never miss a chance to remind us how resilient dogs truly are. Until their forever family finds them, we’ll keep soaking up their company…walks, naps, conversations, and all. Ashton and Lacey are totally chill go-with-the-flow types. They just want to be near you (and each other), get lots of snuggles, and have a steady stream of delicious snacks. These two are gems, and they deserve the kind of love that shines right back at them. Ashton and Lacey are both approximately 10 years old and 10 lbs.
