Story
Meet Cheeto! One of our dedicated foster moms, Jen, saw Cheeto being given away on social media and offered to foster him. We were delighted to welcome this adorable 1-year-old Yorkie/Shih Tzu Mix (Shorkie) into our rescue. Cheeto is an incredibly sweet pup with a youthful energy. He gets along well with other dogs and loves to play. Cheeto was fostered in South Carolina by Jen, living with her three older dogs and multiple cats. Initially, he was somewhat barky with the other dogs as he had never lived with canine companions before. He needed to learn appropriate play communication, but he picked it up quickly and is now a great pack member. He would pair well with a playful dog that matches his energy, or he'd thrive as an only dog with an active family who engages him in walks and play. He showed too much interest and was barky at the cats, so he is not a natural with kitties This sweet boy's primary focus is on his people. He wants to be near them and is always aware of where they are. He's an active boy, but loves his toys and can entertain himself. He responds well to routine, has learned to take naps, and does well with crate training. He's comfortable in the car and always ready for adventure.  In the home, Cheeto takes a little time to warm up to strangers and may initially bark, but settles down once comfortable. He settles down more quickly if ignored (no talk, touch, or eye contact). He likely hasn't had many interactions with new people or experiences, but as a young dog, he'll continue to develop with more exposure. Cheeto came to the DC metro area and is currently being fostered by Humera and her sidekick Terrier, Ava.  He's quickly acclimated to his new routine and is very respectful of Ava. He is always up for playtime but respects when she's not up for it and will entertain himself with toys...He loves to chew bones and squeaky toys and excels at fetch, reliably returning items.  He follows her lead and is confident but also submissive.  Foster mom, Humera, checked in with an update: "Cheeto is mostly housetrained but needs regular breaks. He is crate-trained and sleeps soundly through the night in a crate next to my bed. Being young, he'll find things to chew if unsupervised, but he's easily redirected with toys and bones. Cheeto is medium energy. He has spikes of adolescent energy and playfulness but is also able to chill while I'm working.  I think he could be solo or with a buddy and be just fine either way. He's already learned not to bark at Ava because it doesn't get her to play, so he'll just go entertain himself. He is very food-motivated so training him should be easy and he does want to make you happy by listening. He isn’t a rebel He’s really cuddly too he was on my lap earlier and giving kisses." ********* This adorable pup will bring joy and love to your home. He needs an active family who is ready to show him the ropes while continuing his training. Apply today! Story
It pains us that this is the last resort for our 10 year old companion. Polo came into our life shortly after we married. He's been a ball of joy and burst of energy. We purchased Polo from a reputable breeder in Houston. Until recently, Polo has never had any major health issues. In July, while housed with our sitter, he was playing and jumped from the bed, dislocating his left hip. Since dislocation, and an attempt to put it back in place - it's been determined surgery would be the next step. Unfortunately, at this time, our family can't afford the surgery expense and believe it would be best to rehome Polo. Polo is fun loving, has loved our girls from infancy to now. Having him confined to a playpen isn't ideal and we would love to have the right family take him in and love him just as much as he'll love you!

Story
We just welcomed lookalike duo Bernie and Cleo! These adorable pups are closely bonded and we plan to keep them together. We believe they are mother and son Yorkie / Beagle mixes around 11 or 12 years old. Bernie and Cleo were devastatingly surrendered when their elderly owner's health declined. They are in good shape but you can tell which one may be the faster eater - Bernie’s one thick boy and his mama Cleo is a little thin! Both pups did wonderfully meeting other dogs and are an incredibly sweet and fully bonded pair. It’s reportedly been awhile since they’ve seen the vet, so we are eager to see how they’re doing medically. At first glance, we know some serious dentals are definitely in store! Mama Cleo is also on anti-seizure meds which apparently have worked well for her. Cleo is approximately 12 years old and 11 lbs; Bernie is approximately 11 years old and 21 lbs. Fostered in Middleburg, VA Please apply at MirisHaven.org
