Story
Alfredo is a high energy terrier mix. He's very friendly and loves to play. He has a kitty friend (Fettucini) and they really enjoy playing together and running around so it would be nice if they could find a home together. Alfie would be best in an experienced dog home to help him with a routine. You can check out Fettucini on our kitty page.

Story
We have a wide range of sizes, breeds, and personalities who have been waiting for a long time to find homes in which to live out their lives. All have been vet-checked, spayed/neutered and updated on shots. Some are in great health and hopefully will have many years to enjoy with their new owners... others are being treated for some medical issues and need some extra care to keep them happy and comfortable for whatever time they have left. We do not have a shelter- all our pets are in foster homes and can be seen by appointment only during the week, or at our weekly pet adoptions every Sunday at the Animal Clinic of Morris Plains from 12:30 to 3PM at 3009 Route 10 East next to 5 Star Car Wash (formerly Boulder Car Wash) in Morris Plains (Denville on GPS). To help us better match a pet to your household, we request you fill out an application on our homepage www.secondchance.petfinder.com and copy and paste it into an email, or print it and bring it to our adoption day when you come. Local inquiries only please- we do not do long distance adoptions. Can't adopt but still want to help this dog? Click on the "Sponsor Me" button at the top of this page to donate toward his/her care! All donations are tax-deductible and go directly toward the care of our rescue dogs. Thank you for your support!

Story
Meet our teeniest adoptable Nayla, an 6lb, 2 year old combo of yorkie, chi, and Shih tzu (we think), and was the most scared and defensive of the 5 dogs recently rescued from one home that no longer wanted them. She loves to sleep next to you and cuddle in bed, but still has her panicked moments about handling or being picked up at times and turns into a ferocious little porcupine with teeth everywhere, then transforms back into a soft squishy little stuffed animal when she feels safe. There’s no in between with her- she’s either cuddly and lovable or untouchable and needs time to reset herself. She tolerates other calm dogs but there seemed to be a lot of arguing and competition for food and attention among the 5 little dogs so she might prefer to be an only at this point, or dogs that give her space, as she’s pretty snarky with others. Adults only for sure. She’s not completely non-shedding due to the chihuahua in her mix so likely wouldn’t be a good match for allergy sufferers. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet our adorable Nayla in northern NJ Due to COVID-19, we will not be holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we can schedule socially distant appointments with a specific dog outdoors at our vet’s office: VCA Morris Plains Animal Hospital 3009 Rt 10 East Morris Plains (Denville on GPS) NJ 07950 Now is the perfect time to open your home to a needy dog! Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.

Story
Meet Reeses, as in Reese’s Pieces 🍬 When we first met her she was terrified and wanted to rip us to pieces, but give her a few days and she will love you to pieces instead! Nothing is more rewarding than earning the trust of these scared little ones whose instinct is to lash out when scared, and watching their entire personality change once they realize they can trust you. This under 2 year old scruffy yorkie/Shih tzu mix has plenty of reason to be so distrustful. Her owner never socialized her with other people and would go on vacations and leave her alone in her apartment for days at a time. One day she got evicted and just left this scared little girl behind. Luckily authorities found her before it was too late and healthwise she’s just fine. Her emotional trauma from being left alone so much and getting proper socialization as a puppy are much harder to overcome. Once she loves you, there is no better snuggler. If she could somehow melt into you or fuse herself to your lap like some kind of siamese twin she would do it in a heartbeat. Velcro dog isn’t a strong enough term, she’s more like a magnet 🧲 who will do whatever it takes to get to her person. No gate can hold her, she climbs out of any expen, leaps or squeezes through extra tall baby gates (we haven’t witnessed all of her magical escapes, just know she’s always somehow popping up places she’s not supposed to be 😆). Luckily she’s (grudgingly) cratable though not quietly and will need some practice being left alone- it takes her some time screaming out her protests but she does eventually settle and go to sleep. Unless you want to come home and find her walking around on top of your kitchen counter or refrigerator like a cat we definitely recommend sticking with the crate training. Reeses is looking for a patient adult home that will love this crazy little monkey 🙉 flying squirrel 🐿️ cat 🐈 hybrid, for better or worse, and have a sense of humor about her antics and adventurous spirit. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Reeses in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.

Story
Meet Butterball! We are hoping to be able to change his name soon, maybe Butterfly? Or Buttered Noodle? Lite Butter Popcorn? But right now he’s definitely a Big Ball of Butter! This guy somehow ended up as a “stray”, though he couldn’t have waddled very far from home as he gets winded just from a stroll in the yard. He weighed in at a whopping 15.5lbs when we got him, and should be more like 10lbs. Happily, his bloodwork revealed a low thyroid, so he’s been started on inexpensive magic weight loss pills aka thyroid pills which should make it even easier for him to shed the excess pounds and enjoy a longer healthier life. Butterball is super sweet and mellow, ok with other calm small dogs, and has been an easy polite houseguest so far who doesn’t make any waves. We think he’s about 10 year old and while he looks like a Yorkie, his coat is not non-shedding Yorkie hair, and he has a thick puffy soft undercoat like a pom or papillon maybe. His face and feet had some matted dreadlocks but the rest of him wasn’t matted and we couldn’t bring ourselves to shave his plush coat. Plus now he can say he only looks fat because of his awful haircut 🤷‍♀️ Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Butterball in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ.
