Story
Meet Chestnut! This mighty and strong bulldog mix came to us as a stray on 07/15, after being abandoned by his owners. When this handsome boy came to us he was very sad because he was wondering when his owners would come get him but they never did. Fortunately for Chestnut, he is ready for a new lease on life. He would love to be the best friend you never knew you needed and is ready to become the best version of himself.
Medically Chestnut came to us as a fifty pound short and stocky boy. During his time with staff on 07/15, they noted that "Chestnut is a possible senior approximately 7 years old, he has a loose tooth and is underweight. Intact male. Dirty ears did not allow me to clean them but is very friendly. Vaccines were given with no muzzle. After this he was assessed again on 07/17 in regards to his teeth. During this exam it was observed that he needed to get his canine extracted. Staff stated "The left canine will need to be removed, but the issue is not emergent. Otherwise, the dog is in overall good condition for a middle aged bulldog! No treatments necessary at this time."
Due to this tooth condition and his reactivity, we believe Chestnut will do best with a rescue partner that can rehabilitate him and help him become a happy, healthy dog. Additionally
Chestnut has also had positive dog interactions and negative dog interactions since being in our care so, we recommend going to a single dog home due to his selectiveness but, if you are considering adding to your pack we would recommend a very slow introduction. We also think Chestnut could use some time learning socialization and working on manners. If you have any interest in helping Chestnut turn his life around, please come see him at ACCT Philly today.
On 7/19 staff noted: "Chestnut, 7 year old bully. I saw him when I first arrived with staff, he was barking at another dog passing in the kennels. They noted him to be a typical bully (mouthy, jumpy, humpy yanno). I didn't experience any of that, but he does try to mount other pups. He would do best with a dog savvy foster due to the mounting of other dogs and potential for humans. He could be removed without issue but I anticipate it will take some time to settle in past the humping lol. He took corrections from other dogs without issue. When he wasn't trying to mount other dogs he was a fine coexister. Low energy, mellow and sweet. He comes off stiff and dumb but just him. Boy needs a neuter.Chestnut walked well on leash (some pulling but he's all muscle), house trained and decent kennel presence. He took correction by the husky as well when he tried to hump her.
On 7/16 staff noted: "He would chase tennis balls but not grab them.
On 7/16 staff noted: "I ran around the run and Chestnut would chase me. When he was close to me he would jump up and mount my leg. He also would put my forearm in his mouth. He doesn't have many teeth so it wasn't painful, but he was definitely getting nippy
On 7/16 staff noted: "Chestnut came to me unprompted soliciting attention by sitting between my legs. He allowed all over handling including his ears and tail. However when I stopped petting him, he would get very jumpy. This would stop when I pet him again and start back up whenever I ignored him.
On 7/16 staff noted: "Chestnut barks and growls at other dogs.
On 7/16 staff noted: "Chestnut was standing at the front of his kennel with soft eyes, a wagging tail, and a loose body. He allowed me to leash him easily. He will get back into the kennel on his own.
On 7/16 staff noted: "Chestnut was very friendly with the reporting party as well as the Philly PD officer. He was very friendly and loving with all the staff members.
Due to his strength and lack of manners we would recommend an adult - only household for Chestnut. On 7/15 staff noted: "No kids and general behavior waiver added due to jumping, mounting, and mouthing.
