Ronda is adjusting wonderfully to life outside the shelter. She’s mostly potty trained and will let you know when she needs to go out, but if she can’t hold it, she’ll use potty pads. She gets so excited to play outside that she sometimes needs a gentle reminder that it’s also potty time. Walks are still a little intimidating for her, but with patience and encouragement, she’s learning that they can be fun. Ronda is a Kelpie mix, though on the smaller side—she may even have some Chihuahua in her. No matter her mix, she’s a lovable, playful companion who is eager to bond with her forever family. She would do best in a home without young children. Slow introductions to other dogs are best, and while she’s still figuring out cats, she knows to leave them alone when told. "Four years ago, there was a little pup that fought for her life all alone on the side of the road while humans all around her evacuated due to Hurricane Ida. A passerby saw her and scooped her up, which surely saved her life. Having been a long time volunteer in animal rescue, her rescuer brought her home to CO and then reached out to MHCR for help. It didn’t take long for sweet, little, Roo’s dreams to come true. A wonderful family adopted her. Unfortunately, during the last couple of years, Roo, now known as Mara, began to not enjoy living with the other dog in the home. Right before the holidays, she found herself without her family, and without her home. Mara is now around 4.5-5 years old. She’s in need of an adoptive home as the only dog. Until then, she awaits her forever in a loving foster home. Mara is overweight, but once she sheds a few lbs she will fit into the medium/large category size. She’s house trained, crate trained, and trustworthy free roam. Here’s what her family said about her, and undoubtedly what she misses the most: “Mara loves cuddling more than anything. She mostly enjoys cuddling on the couch in your “pocket” (in between your legs). She will bury her head underneath pillows and blankets, and if she is able to sleep in the bed, then she will bury herself under the covers and snuggle up next to you in the cold months. I have been with one family for most of my life, but almost 2 years ago one of my humans passed away and my other one couldn't take care of me anymore. I have since been with my new family, but they have little children who make me really anxious and scared. I do best in a calm environment where I am the center of attention. Please no children, unless they are older (12 years +) and know how to be calm around me. I grew up with other pets, and can do well with other dogs, I just need to be slowly introduced. I do love cats and do great with them in the home. I am overall a really sweet girl, and will stick to you like glue once I get to know you! I take anxiety medication currently, and am on a special diet because I am overweight. I am up-to-date on all vaccines and will have a copy of my medical records upon adoption with me.
