Story
Avaric was pulled from a local shelter after being red-listed due to severe emaciation. He was in urgent need of rescue placement so he could safely begin gaining weight and receive proper care, and we’re so glad he’s now with us at Pug Nation. When Avaric arrived, he was dangerously underweight and had clearly gone a long time without consistent food. To keep him safe while starting to gain weight he started on multiple small meals a day to avoid refeeding syndrome, and he’s been doing great! He’s already gained some weight and continues to improve, though he still has more to gain. After thorough vet exams and lab work, there’s no underlying medical cause for his condition. He was simply starved. Now that he’s feeling a bit better, Avaric’s personality is coming through. He’s extremely food motivated (understandably), energetic, and full of life. He loves people, enjoys playing with other dogs, and has a big voice when food is involved. He’s also wonderfully unique looking, with one floppy ear, one upright ear, a big underbite, and long, deer-like legs. We think he may be a Chihuahua–Pug mix, and he’s as silly as he is adorable!Avaric would do best in a home with an active owner who isn’t gone long hours and can continue helping him gain weight and confidence. He’s ready for a life filled with regular meals, adventure, and the love he missed out on for far too long. Interested in giving this incredibly resilient dog the home he truly deserves? Story
This little lady, estimated to be about 8 years old and weighing just 13 pounds, has had a journey most dogs couldn’t imagine. She was found as a stray in rough shape. Her skin was inflamed, most of her fur missing, and covered in a severe flea infestation that had left her raw and incredibly itchy. On top of that, she was terrified of everything, often freezing or shaking when approached. It was heartbreaking, but also the start of an amazing transformation.Over the weeks at our rescue, Persephone has blossomed. With gentle care, patience, and lots of love from our staff and volunteers, she’s come out of her shell. Her skin has improved dramatically, her fur has grown back beautifully, and her personality now shines just as brightly. When she sees a familiar face, her tail wags like a little metronome, she squeals with joy, and runs up to deliver smooches with her adorably long tongue. Watching her gain confidence and happiness has been nothing short of magical!Persephone’s unique look is just as charming as her personality. She has a long body that hints at dachshund, a big overbite that makes you think Chihuahua, and a sweet little pug-like face that is impossible not to love. No matter the mix, she’s utterly perfect and impossible to resist. This little lady thrives on gentle, steady care. She does well with other dogs, is highly treat-motivated, and loves attention in the right, calm environment. Her ideal home would be with someone who understands she needs time to feel safe, isn’t gone long hours, and can continue helping her thrive into her golden years. Senior dog experience is a plus, but patience, love, and treats will get you far with Persephone. She doesn’t ask for much - just quiet stability, cuddles, and the chance to be loved the way she deserves. Persephone is one of those rare dogs who gives her whole heart to the people she trusts. She’s already stolen the hearts of everyone at our rescue, and we know she’s ready to steal yours too. Interested in giving this sweet little lady her happily-ever-after? Please inquire today!

Story
Meet Pete – Your Calm and Loyal Friend! Hi there, I’m Pete, a 3-year-old, 18-pound, long-haired golden Chihuahua/Dachshund mix with a gentle soul and a calm demeanor. About Me: • Neutered, fully vaccinated, and micro-chipped—I’m ready to join your family. • Calm Personality: I have a laid-back attitude and enjoy relaxing by your side. • Affectionate: I form strong bonds with my human companions and, with a slow introduction, I can get along with other dogs. However, I would do better as an only dog. My Favorites: • Sunbathing: I love finding a sunny spot to relax and unwind. • Leisurely Walks: I enjoy calm strolls and am a well-behaved walking partner. • Crate Trained: I’m comfortable in my crate and have maintained a clean space. A Little About My Past: Having lived outdoors most of my life, a compassionate rescue brought me into a home environment. I’m eager to learn and would benefit from your guidance with potty training, especially in understanding how to signal when I need to go outside. Ideal Home: While I share a close bond with my brother Lou, we’ve found that we might be happier in separate homes. I’m seeking a loving family who appreciates a calm and loyal companion and can provide patience as I adapt to indoor living.
