Adopted as a young pup, Maxxy spent the last six years deeply loved and exceptionally well cared for. He grew up alongside three canine siblings and countless foster dogs—his mom was a dedicated RDR volunteer, and Maxxy played a special role in helping foster pups feel safe and welcome in their temporary home. Mr. Maxxy is a fun-loving, spunky boy with a playful spirit. He enjoys going for walks, soaking up affection, and cuddling up with his doggy siblings. He has a big heart and so much love to give to his future family. Mr. Maxxy is truly a special boy who is ready to find a loving forever home where he can continue to thrive. Abandoned with a Broken Heart:(Literally, this sweet but confused senior was brought to animal control and never claimed. He doesn't hear or see too well but bonds quickly and is a sweet sensitive boy who loves short walks and attention. His medical work-up revealed a heart murmur and significant heart disease- he's not in heart failure just yet but getting there. He's on 3 medications longterm to hopefully keep that from happening for as long as possible, but we don't know how long that will be. We are hoping to find him a quiet home in which to retire and enjoy whatever quality time he has. He's not too fond of other dogs and would probably prefer to be an only pet or have his own separate area away from others. Most of the time his kennel looks empty, since he loves to nap burrowed completely under his fleecy blankets. So if you ever can't find him in your house, check the laundry pile;)He was passed through family members who couldn't care for him, and sadly it sounds as though he's spent most of his time crated and not had a lot of attention. He will need some work on housebreaking and probably belly bands initially, but he's been neutered now so hopefully his marking behavior will improve. The volume of discarded seniors entering NJ’s shelter system is sad and alarming. Pippy is one of our newest arrival. She was curled up in a sad scared cranky ball in the back of her kennel at our local Animal Control facility surrounded by large barking dogs. She’s severely overweight at 18lbs when she should be more like 12, and she gets out of breath easily with even short walks. She was blind in one eye which was painful and uncomfortable due to severe untreated, chronic dry eye as well as glaucoma, so we made the decision with our vet that removal would be the best option to help her feel better. She’s healing nicely and warming up, she’s a chihuahua so can be snarky with strangers and doesn’t like to be bothered when she’s comfy in her bed, but getting a bit happier each day. And she only has bottom teeth remaining after her dental so isn’t particularly scary. Getting gummed to death by an obese one-eyed pirate 🏴‍☠️ Chihuahua isn’t much of a threat. She’s fine with other mellow little dogs and definitely knows her own chihuahua kind, a funny but lovable little personality if you understand chi culture and customs. She’s at least 10 years old and overall in pretty good health now that her untreated eye and dental situation have been taken care of and she’s already lost 2lbs on her diet! Pippy is just the latest in a long line of local seniors we have taken in suffering from chronic painful medical issues that need immediate medical attention to give them a better quality of life. Please consider a donation so we can continue to step up week after week for these little ones in need in our local shelters. Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ.
