Story
Meet Fudge. Fudge's owner moved and could not take him with her. He originally came to us with his "brother" and have been in foster care, living with several other small dogs. While we were told the brothers are bonded, his foster believes that was not necessarily true as they do not always stay together or look for each other and each have made friends with the other dogs in the foster home. They have become more outgoing and social as well. So the decision was made for Fudge to find his own forever home as long as there is at least 1 other small dog in the home to keep him company. He is a very friendly boy who is about 5-6 years old and 16 pounds. Please help Fudge find the loving home he deserves. We do NOT ship our animals. All adoptive families must travel to us to meet their adoptive dog/cat. Applicants must live within a 2 hour radius from Sparta/Andover (07871/07821). Please understand that we are an animal shelter and thus unable to say whether the dogs are housebroken as they are not in homes. If you are interested in adopting, we encourage you to please submit an application on our website today so that we can try and process and pre-approve any potential adopters prior to our next adoption event. PLEASE USE THIS LINK TO SUBMIT AN ADOPTION APPLICATION. WE ONLY ACCEPT ADOPTION APPLICATIONS THROUGH OUR WEBSITE. ANY OTHERS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED. Story
The volume of discarded seniors entering NJ’s shelter system is sad and alarming. Pippy is one of our newest arrival. She was curled up in a sad scared cranky ball in the back of her kennel at our local Animal Control facility surrounded by large barking dogs. She’s severely overweight at 18lbs when she should be more like 12, and she gets out of breath easily with even short walks. She was blind in one eye which was painful and uncomfortable due to severe untreated, chronic dry eye as well as glaucoma, so we made the decision with our vet that removal would be the best option to help her feel better. She’s healing nicely and warming up, she’s a chihuahua so can be snarky with strangers and doesn’t like to be bothered when she’s comfy in her bed, but getting a bit happier each day. And she only has bottom teeth remaining after her dental so isn’t particularly scary. Getting gummed to death by an obese one-eyed pirate 🏴‍☠️ Chihuahua isn’t much of a threat. She’s fine with other mellow little dogs and definitely knows her own chihuahua kind, a funny but lovable little personality if you understand chi culture and customs. She’s at least 10 years old and overall in pretty good health now that her untreated eye and dental situation have been taken care of and she’s already lost 2lbs on her diet! Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Pippy in Northern NJ. Pippy is just the latest in a long line of local seniors we have taken in suffering from chronic painful medical issues that need immediate medical attention to give them a better quality of life. Please consider a donation so we can continue to step up week after week for these little ones in need in our local shelters. Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.

Story
Meet Lady Dolly 👑 of the County of Morris, New Jersey Descended from ancient Chihuahua royalty, Lady Dolly is looking for a home to respect- no, worship- her and listen to her edicts and demands. She is smarter and better than you and other dogs and her wishes need to be carried out without argument. She does readily accept bribes - squeaky toys will get you somewhere but you are going to want to arm yourself with the yummiest of treats if you really want her to seriously consider your request to cooperate. Otherwise she does what she wants and you better not challenge or interrupt that, or prepare to feel the wrath of thousands of years of chihuahua rage channeled through her 10lbs body. She likes hanging out with her subjects, but you are going to have to submit a formal request in writing before petting her especially if she’s on her throne/couch/bed and expect to wait 2-5 business days for an answer. Better yet, just wait for her to request your attention when she feels like it. She is quite confident in her natural beauty and isn’t going to let you give her a manicure 💅 or dress her in clothes. And she is a mature adult who can walk perfectly well on her own 4 feet so isn’t going to submit to being carried around like a baby just because she’s the size of one. She keeps her palace clean as long as you open the doors for her upon demand, and she can handle her own security loudly if the villagers make it past the moat around her home without needing to wait for a doorbell. She doesn’t mind other dogs as long as they too bow down 🙇 to her and don’t try to steal her throne or disrespect her. She rose to power at a young age, and at 5 years old she still has many years to run her run her new kingdom. If you would like Lady Dolly to consider your request to rule your castle, please email njwoof@cs.com to see if she will accept your offer. Story
We accidentally ended up with a very sweet little puppy man! Meet Ziggy! He was too terrified to be touched in the pound and terrified of the leash, but once we got him out he warmed up really fast and turned out to just be a scared little baby. Probably about 8-9 months one and 15lbs full grown, he’s definitely part chihuahua with maybe some pug or something else with a big squishy wrinkly head 🤷‍♀️. He loves other dogs, jumps on you to ask to be picked up, and is playful and sweet once he feels safe. He definitely was never on a leash before and probably never went outside so will need work on housebreaking and socializing to the outside world. He would definitely like another doggie role model to help boost his confidence. Ziggy has been neutered, updated on shots, and is ready for a home… email njwoof@cs.com to meet him in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. Story
Meet Linda! She’s a complicated little big dog with a complicated history with us. We have known her for a while and assisted her owners with getting her spayed when she almost died from a uterine infection, but now it became clear they weren’t able to care for her longterm. She came to us sick with some gi issues and morbidly obese at a whopping 33lbs! The photos don’t do justice to just how wide she was 🐳. She would turn blue and struggle to breathe just getting to the yard to go to the bathroom and back in. She was discovered to be hypothyroid which was a big part of the issue, and with a strict diet and her magic daily thyroid pills the pounds are melting off now and she’s feeling much better already. She’s just as complicated personality wise- definitely a chihuahua attitude and doesn’t like strangers, being picked up, or anyone sticking their hands in her face. She has to come to you for attention on her terms though she’s warmed up and follows us around wagging her tail now. But she’s not a touchy-feely cuddly, overly affectionate dog. She’s fine with other dogs and chill hanging with a pack of little ones, definitely better dog skills than people skills just like us. She’s 9 years old and pretty healthy overall now besides the weight and the thyroid, and she should have a long life ahead of her as long as she continues to keep the weight off. She’s looking for an adult home that will just let her be herself and doesn’t mind some snark and being told off sometimes. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Linda in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ.
