Hello there! My name is Aton, and I’m a 4-year-old, 34-pound cocker spaniel with a story to tell. I was found wandering as a stray in rural Georgia and ended up in the county shelter, but the wonderful people there worked with Florida Coastal Cocker Rescue to give me a second chance at a great life. I arrived terribly matted, but after a fabulous spa day at Green Dog Spa in Jacksonville, I feel and look pawtastic! Let me tell you about my personality: I’m super sweet, incredibly smart, and I LOVE people. I’m a certified velcro cocker, which means I will follow you absolutely everywhere—and I mean it! After being abandoned once, I just don’t like being left alone (I cry and bark), and I need someone who understands that and can be home with me most of the time (no condos or apartments for me). I adore being petted and I’m happiest when I’m snuggled up in a cozy dog bed, nesting in blankets on the couch, or yes, sneaking into your bed for some quality human time. I’m mostly housebroken and will even go to the door to let you know when I need to go out, but I do need a refresher and a regular potty schedule to keep me on track. I’m good on the leash, great on walks, and I love car rides. I get along wonderfully with other dogs, and I might be ok with older, dog-savvy kids who know how to interact respectfully with pups like me. I also have a fun quirky side—I love to play fetch with a tennis ball (though I might hold onto it for a bit before giving it back), and I get VERY excited when I see delivery trucks and love to follow (chase) them. Now, a few things my forever family should know: I’m a treasure hunter and will get into trash cans if they’re not secured, and I can be a bit protective of my “finds,” so I need someone who can redirect me gently and keep temptation out of reach. I’m currently being treated for ear infections, and this is important—I need a cocker-savvy adopter who understands the breed and will commit to regular ear cleaning and grooming. I don’t like my ears being touched and will let you know it (I can get grumbly), so I need someone patient and experienced who knows how to handle me with care and understanding. My story is pretty wild – I was found as a stray in an overcrowded California shelter the week before Christmas, and I was pretty sick. But a Good Samaritan couldn’t leave me behind, rescued me, and brought me all the way to Florida where I was nursed me back to health! Now FCCR is helping find me my forever home. I LOVE people (including older dog-savvy kids) and would do best in a calm household where someone’s around most of the day. I’m a total lovebug who adores being with my humans! I will roll over for belly rubs whenever anyone talks to me…even in an elevator and that’s how I greet my foster mom when she comes home. It’s my signature move…i roll over to collect my tummy tax! That said, I do fine when left home alone too. I’m fully housebroken, polite (no barking or chewing!), and I have excellent house manners. I wait to be invited onto furniture and take treats so gently. I love to explore, love to run, and love to cuddle. I get along with other calm dogs but don’t know about cats. I walk great on a leash even near busy streets, and I’m super chill – loud noises don’t faze me one bit! Here’s what you need to know about me: I have great hearing but have limited vision (blind in one eye, limited in the other). I am a pretty confident guy and I can map out my surroundings quickly but I’m not comfortable with staircases (a few steps are fine). I take daily eye drops like an absolute champ! I Because of my eyesight, I would do best with a calm doggie sibling who doesn’t mind me getting really close to them. Conversely if a dog startles me by getting too close (even just to be friendly) I may bark and retreat — it can be a little scary when someone is in your face. You know, personal space and all.
