Story
PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE BIO ON THIS DOG BEFORE REQUESTING AN APPLICATION. MANY OF OUR DOGS HAVE STRICT REQUIREMENTS FOR THEIR ADOPTION.
2-year-old male purebred Dachshund, about 17 pounds. Morty is a handsome little piebald dachshund who came to Smidget with his mom (Smidget Emma), after his owner passed away. He has an outgoing personality, a lot of energy, and his favorite place to be is on your lap. Despite all of the changes he's faced in his short life, this resilient pup is living his best life! He has been incredibly well behaved in his foster home, including two cats and two other small dogs. He walked in like he's lived here his whole life! Mortimer has a basic foundation for obedience and house training. He already knows sit and is learning better manners on leash. We are working on new skills almost daily, since he is so eager to please. Like every dog, he had a few potty accidents when he was learning the layout of the home, but he is getting better every day. He's sleeping a full night in his kennel but struggles a little when kenneling in daytime hours. He would do best in an active home with a fenced yard, that offers him outlets for his energy. Mortimer loves to play - his favorites have been frisbees and tennis balls. He is already trying to snatch frisbees out of the air! Do not let his semi-short stature fool you - he is extremely athletic and capable of jumping onto beds, couches, into cars, and onto laps. He is VERY fast and will need ongoing work on his recall. He hasn't shown any food aggression during playtime or dinner time with two other small dogs. He is very cuddly and cozy; I've panicked several times when I couldn't find him because he was completely wrapped himself up in a blanket. The only behavior that is being actively addressed is his protective streak. He seems to be moderately reactive to new people and will guard his human. Morty has had some issues with jumping up and being mouthy and nipping when he meets new people. BUT, once he knows you, he LOVES you. His protective Doxie streak requires proper introductions and correction. That said, Mortimer is eager to please/meet new people and is getting better at recognizing social cues from his foster mom and other dogs. He is extremely trainable and very food motivated. We know he will chase a cat and he is not the best candidate for homes with children. To request an adoption application, email smidgetrescue@hotmail.com
