Story
Barks and Meows Rescue introduces Beatrice. She was one of 12 puppies born in a home to Mommy Princess in North Bay. Mommy and her litter and 19 other hounds were confiscated from their home and surrendered to the Humane Society. Barks and Meows Rescue took Mommy Princess as well as Charlotte and her sister Beatrice. Beatrice is a leader, not a follower. Beatrice is the alpha of the two sisters. She is extremely affectionate and listens quite well for a hound. She is very food-focused and motivated making positive reinforcement training easy. They have other dogs in their foster home to play with and will do so regularly. They are now housebroken but will use pee pads if the door is not available. They both love to be outdoors, playing with toys, chasing each other, and chewing on sticks. Offering them food will have them both coming running in when it's time. Beatrice is learning to climb as per her breed mix so will now sleep on her foster parent's bed at night. She loves to cuddle on the couch and chair with her family members or other dogs. She is fed three times daily, in her crate, Royal Canin Medium Breed Puppy Food. Beatrice is sweet and loving. She is about 4 pounds less than her sister and not as tall. Mommy Princess is 55lbs so we expect these girls to be medium size dogs when fully grown. They have both had all three sets of vaccines and been dewormed. Beatrice is being spayed and has had her small umbilical hernia repaired. The sisters are both on Heartworm/flea/tick prevention during the season. Both girls love to be held and cuddled. The ideal home for them is a family that has or has had hounds in the past. This breed is not for everyone as they can never be off-leash unless in a fully fenced yard with the correct height. They are pure hounds so will follow their nose. Going for hikes and walks each time will be an adventure as they will stop to smell everything. A cat-free home is mandatory as they will have a very high prey drive. A fully fenced yard (wooden, not chain-link), another resident dog, and a Veterinarian History of Compliance is mandatory to apply for darling Beatrice. They will not be adopted out together. We do not adopt to families with children under the age of 6.

She is taller than her sister so has no problem just hopping on a couch or chair with ease. She has learned jumping on and off the bed is lots of fun. Charlotte loves to cuddle on the couch and chair with her family members or other dogs. She is fed three times daily, in her crate, Royal Canin Medium Breed Puppy Food. Charlotte is sweet and loving. She is about 4 pounds heavier than her sister quite a bit taller. Charlotte looks very much like her Mom, sometimes it's hard to tell them apart, other than their current size. Mommy Princess continued to be a wonderful mom to Beatrice and Charlotte once she entered foster care. She protected them until she felt all was safe. Once a day, her babes will come over and lick and cuddle her but then are off to play with others. Princess is a very low-key gal and nice and quiet. She sleeps quite a bit which is typical of her breed mix She is very gentle when taking treats. Princess has a large hound appetite so her food is measured out twice daily so she doesn't get any heavier. Princess is housebroken and does well in the vehicle. She is capable of counter-surfing so a hound-proof home is important. She is not crate trained but her foster home ensures there is nothing on the counters or tables she would want. This breed is not for everyone as they can never be off-leash unless in a fully fenced yard with the correct height. She is a pure hound so will follow her nose. Going for hikes and walks each time will be an adventure as they will stop to smell everything. Princess will require a leash and body harness for her walks. Princess is very gentle with children but a little timid if boisterous. We would recommend children 10 years plus if there are any in the home. A cat-free home is mandatory as they will have a very high prey drive. A fully fenced yard (wooden, not chain-link), another resident dog, and a Veterinarian History of Compliance is mandatory to apply for our Princess as hounds are prone to separation anxiety. We do not adopt to families with children under the age of 6.

Story
Barks and Meows Rescue introduces Amelia. She is a 6-year-old Pointer with a coat as soft as Velour. Amelia weighs about 50lbs and was found as a stray. Amelia is such a nice gal. She is so typical of her breed. She prances when she runs to greet you in the house. She loves her foster family and has learned to trust them through food. This Angel is always happy, tail wagging the entire time anyone talks to her. Amelia loves her food and would eat until she exploded if you let her. Her food is carefully measured out and she eats it all right away. Amelia doesn't have a sensitive stomach so can handle various types of food brands. She arrived at our Rescue and was very timid. She is has learned to trust more so now because of treats but still is a bit nervous. Amelia has a very gentle nature and though sometimes can be timid, she is not fear aggressive. We were so pleased to see her pointing tendencies when we took her to the conservation park for her photos. She was truly in her element. Amelia enjoys the company of other dogs. She is great with both males and females. When she gets really excited she will initiate a bit of play but a Companion Dog would suit her just fine. Amelia is not a high-energy dog but does require one good run a day as well as a walk. A minimum of one hour of exercise each day will suffice. She would only be able to be in a fenced-in area as she would be gone after birds if off-leash. This breed should be enrolled in obedience training and it is helpful that they are so food motivated. We do not know her history and have no idea if she was used as a hunting dog so her training has been minimal. She is housebroken and paper trained. Amelia does not require a crate, though she eats in one due to the other dogs in the home. This breed is a wonderful family dog, loyal and loving. Due to their strength and very hard wagging tails, toddlers are not recommended. She tolerates the warmer weather better than the cold. She will need a coat during the Fall and Winter months. Her hair coat is short. Amelia is great with strangers, again typical of her breed. She does have a prey drive and is very intelligent. She is a quiet dog in her foster home. She is very alert and were notify her family if anything happens out of the ordinary. Pointers also make great running companions for runners and cyclists. They are naturals at dog sports such as field trials, obedience, and agility. She rides well in a vehicle. The ideal home for Amelia is one that has a family willing to participate in training, obedience classes with her. A family that is keen on taking her for a good run each day and hikes would benefit her disposition. A smaller family unit would suit her well. Another resident dog we believe is a necessity for Amelia as we think she may suffer separation anxiety without one. Amelia is spayed, up to date with vaccines, treated for Heartworm in July, and is now heartworm free, and was on Heartworm Flea Prevention throughout the season. A fully fenced yard, another socialized resident dog, and a Veterinarian History of Compliance are mandatory to apply for Amelia.

Story
Barks and Meows Rescue introduces Lola. She is a 1-year-old Hound mix with a cropped tail. She has short-medium length fur and weighs 22kg. Lola was transferred to our Rescue from another Ontario Rescue. Lola is a very loving and playful gal. She loves to play with other dogs but plays very hard for a dog her size. Another Rescue pulled her from the OSPCA but found her quite mouthy and at the time they did not have a suitable foster for her. We took her knowing her mouthing issues were age-related and her way of playing as she would with another dog. We immediately place her in a foster home with other dogs where she could play amongst the pack and use her energy levels up playing chase with the other dogs. It has worked perfectly and she is not mouthy at all in the foster home. She runs very fast and really looks like a deer from the back. Lola has a sensitive stomach so is on a Chicken and Rice Diet with grains. She is a high-energy dog, so she is fed 1 1/2 cups twice daily and she metabolizes it quickly. She is good with both dogs and cats according to the previous Rescue. She loves to run with toys in her mouth and she is very fast. She has no fear of any other dogs and will let other dogs know if they get out of line with her. She is a hound mix and we are unsure if her cropped tail is natural or not but we do not believe it is. Lola sleeps on the furniture at night time or a doggie bed, whichever is available at the time. She will counter surf, typical of her breed so one must be mindful of this trait. She will follow her nose so a minimum of a 6-foot high wooden fully fenced yard is mandatory. She requires to be tethered in the vehicle otherwise she wants to be a backseat front-seat passenger. Lola loves people and is very affectionate. She does not have any trust issues. She loves to lay on your lap or beside you on a couch when she is done playing and will give kisses. She is game for any kind of toy she can carry in her mouth. Due to her breed mix, she will neve be allowed off leash in an unfenced area as she will follow her nose. The ideal home for Lola will be another dog, preferably a male that is able to play hard with her. Older children would be fine, 10 years plus. She will require a steady diet and a family where someone is home part of the day. She is a high-energy dog so will need stimulus if the other dog does not wish to play. Eventually, she will calm down but currently, she is an adolescent so ways of dealing with her stimuli is vital. She would be great in agility classes. Lola will make a very loyal member to her family. Lola is spayed, up to date with vaccines, 4dx tested negative and was on heartworm prevention from August to November. She is also microchipped. A fully fenced backyard, made of wood, minimum of 6 feet, another resident male dog who likes to play hard and a Veterinarian History of Compliance are mandatory to apply for our Lola.

Story
Barks and Meows Rescue introduces Leia. Leia is a Catahoula Leopard Dog mix weighing 28 kgs. She has a medium hair coat and is 2 years old. Leia was an owner surrender. Leia is a very sweet girl. She came from a family with 3 very young children and no other dog in the home. The family spent thousands of dollars on her trying to determine the cause of her diarrhea. She definitely has a protein allergy and what we discovered once she entered our Rescue is that she loves other dogs, and enjoys not having children around. Her previous home was just not the right fit for her. They loved her so much but were very worried that her diarrhea was not giving her the quality of life she should have. She has been kept on the Purina Veterinarian HP Vegetarian Food with other proteins allowed in her diet. She is no longer on the anxiety meds she was on previously and her stools are always solid. She now is able to retain all the nutrients in her food and has gained 5lbs.   Her previous family did a wonderful job taking her to training and she knows all her basic commands. She takes vegetarian treats gently from your hands and eats 5 cups of food a day. Leia was very good with the children in the home but we believe the dynamic was just too busy for her. She is housebroken and sleeps either on a doggy bed or the couch at night time. She does very well with all dogs and enjoys playing with them and their companionship. Typical of the Catahoula breed, Leia has one eye that is half blue and half brown. She is now at her ideal weight and is quite tall as she has long legs. She is a gentle gal who loves hugs and giving gentle kisses. Leia has a very high prey drive. She could never be off-leash in an unfenced area due to her prey drive. She does pull on a lead due to her prey drive so she will require more work on walking with a lead and body harness. She rides in the car not badly but wants to be close to the family in the front if no one is in the back with her. The ideal home for Leia is a quiet one with another dog. The dog could be a companion or a playmate. If there are children in the home, it would be best if they were older so as not to stress her. Leia is spayed, up to date with vaccines, dewormed, 4dx tested negative. She requires to be kept on for life the Purina Veterinarian HP Vegetarian Diet with no other types of food allowed. A cat free home and another socialized resident canine, a fully fenced backyard, made of wood being a minimum of 6 feet high and a Veterinarian History of Compliance are mandatory to apply for our Leia.
