Story
Meet Greta: Hello, I’m Greta! I am a playful and VERY inquisitive 8 year old German Shepherd . I am just over 64 pounds (for now) as my foster mom is taking good care of me to get me back on track. I am expected to be about a healthy 75lbs. I was on the euthanasia list in Texas, because I was there “too long” 45 days to be exact , but got a second chance at life thanks to Safe Haven and my foster family! When I arrived to my foster home, I first met my furry foster sister Maya! She’s the best and I am learning a lot from her. I still don’t know my name but I am getting better at it! I know basic commands such as sit and stay. I am working with my Hooman foster siblings on “shake”, “stay” “lay down”. The best part is all the treats I get I am still learning to go down the stairs but I am making progress every day! I am completely housebroken and crate trained. Most nights I snuggle with my furry foster sister on “my” designated couch space but.. I also find comfort in my crate and will sleep soundly in there if needed. I love my foster family’s and get along and play respectfully with them. Fetch is my favorite! I also do great on a leash and love to take walks. I enjoy snuggle time with my foster mom and love playing With my foster siblings. While I have learned to respect my foster family’s resident cats, I would probably do best in a home without them. I would, however, thrive in a home with another playful pup! I have not met any young kids, so I’m not sure how I would do with them. However I met many of my foster siblings friends and do great!! If you are ready for a loyal and playful companion, I just may be your perfect match! Our standard adoption fee is $375 cash or check and $385 credit card ($10 processing fee). . It includes spay/neuter when age appropriate at our participating vets, age appropriate core vaccinations, fecal testing, deworming, flea and tick preventative,1st vet visit at one of our participating vets, and micro-chipping. We must have an application, conduct a phone interview, and meet your entire family to approve an adoption. Applications will not be reviewed unless fully completed. An application does not commit you to adopting and does not guarantee adoption but does allow us to begin the review process. Please email adopt@safehavendogsIL.org for an application or additional details. Please note that the breeds and sizes posted in this biography are educated best guesses and are not guaranteed. Safe Haven Dog Rescue reserves the right to refuse adoption of any dog or puppy to any applicant (adopter) for any reason.

Story
Benji has been our pet for 4 years and we are very attached to him but we found out recently that my wife is allergic to dogs and we tried to work around it but her allergies are getting worse. We are sad to make this decision but we have to let him go and he is the most proper dog ever. Friendly, loves to play, loves kids, he is neutered and is on a wellness plan so he gets all his shots quarterly. We have had zero issues with him even at the vet, he regularly goes to dog boarding and socializes with other dogs. If you are looking for a constant companion, ever curious about what you are doing and wants to help with everything even though he doesn't know how, he is your dog. Would be helpful if you had a fenced yard but if not as long as you are okay doing walks and taking him to dog parks you will be fine. He doesn't need constant exercise but we do have play times with him like fetch which he loves.

Story
Meet Donna! Donna is an approximately 3-5 year old female German Shepherd (mix?) who was brought in as a stray and was never reclaimed by an owner. This girl is SWEET! She loves human attention and is a well mannered girl here at the shelter. She appears to be potty trained and generally keeps her kennel clean. Donna also appears to be dog friendly. We are not sure about cats as she has not yet been cat tested. Donna is a sweetheart but can be more reserved/shy at first so may be best in a home with dog savvy children or older children. Donna weighs approximately 70 lbs. Her adoption fee is $150 and she is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated and heartworm negative. Please call 630-553-9256 or email animalcontrol@Kendallcountyil.gov, or stop by the shelter to meet her!

Story
Meet Schnapps! Schnapps came to our shelter as a stray and was unfortunately never reclaimed by his owner. We do know that his real name is Schnapps as that was the name on his microchip. He is around 6 years old. This poor guy came to us with a ton of hair-loss, sad demeanor and just looked "swollen". We quickly discovered that he was cryptorchid, meaning one of his testicles never descended appropriately. This put him at a pre-disposition for cancer. We decided to move forward with his neuter procedure after he wasn't reclaimed, as there wasn't a clear reason for his hair-loss and he seemed to otherwise be in good shape. The vets discovered a hugely enlarged testicle (larger than a tennis ball) in his abdomen and we sent it out for biopsy, hopeful but concerned for a worst case scenario for this sweet boy. We recently received the biopsy results and we are delighted to know that while it was a cancerous tumor, it was a Sertoli tumor, which actually explained all of his other symptoms including alopecia, bloating, irregular atrophied testicle (the other one, non cancerous one). The great news is that the removal normally results in complete remission of the cancer, and that it only metastasizes in between 2-15% of cases. Given his immediate improvement in his symptoms, including reduced "swollen" appearance, and attitude change, we think he will continue to improve! He is a German Shepherd lovers dream. Schnapps seems to be pretty indifferent to other dogs here, and even might be fine with cats! He seems to be housetrained and crate trained. He thinks that BALL IS LIFE! He has a favorite toy football here that he absolutely adores and brings with him everywhere. All he wants you to do is throw it. Schnapps is a typical, vocal GSD. He will howl a bit when left alone, and all he wants is to be near his person. He is scared of storms, but as long as he has a place to hide with his ball, by his favorite human he does just fine. He is great in the car. Schnapps adoption fee is $150 and it includes his neuter, microchip, vaccination, negative heartworm test, and full send out blood panel and biopsy. Please call 630-553-9256 or email animalcontrol@Kendallcountyil.gov for more information or to start the adoption process.
