Story
Age/Birthdate: 02/05/2022 • Current Weight: 76 lbs • Breed Guess: German Shepherd • Fully Vetted: Yes • Adoption fee: $0 fee has been sponsored by a generous donor! Any Medical or Special Needs: None Temperament with: •Dogs: Yes, he LOVES other dogs •Cats: Yes, he LOVES cats •Children: No •Strangers: Good but will need slow introductions. Reactive towards men. Training Needs: Crate Trained: Yes Potty Trained: Yes Reese is a HANDSOME Shepherd mix weighing in at a solid 76 pounds at just under 4 years old! Sadly, the first two years of Reese’s life were filled with abuse and disappointment. As a result, he was profoundly affected — constantly being in harm’s way was all he knew during his puppy years. Despite his rough start, Reese has shown incredible resilience and heart. He’s ready to leave his past behind and continue learning that not all people mean harm. Reese will need a patient and understanding family that will allow him the time he needs to decompress and warm up. His ideal home would be with a single woman or with a small family — Shepherd experience would help tremendously, as an adopter will have to be willing to play the long game to earn his trust as he has had aggression issues towards people in the past Because of his past, Reese can be fearful and defensive toward unfamiliar people, especially during first introductions. This is not him being “mean” — it’s simply the only way he learned to protect himself. With proper management, slow introductions, and structure, he does well, and he has been thriving in his foster home. His foster mom has built a wonderful bond with him, showing that once Reese feels safe, he is loyal, loving, and deeply connected! Reese has come leaps and bounds from where he started, but he’ll need continued support during his transition to ensure he builds equally strong relationships with his new family. While he’s made amazing progress, Reese still needs a family who understands his past trauma and is dedicated to helping him continue to heal. In typical Shepherd fashion, earning his trust can take time — but once you have it, he’ll trust you with his life 1000%. Once you get past Reese’s tough-guy armor, you’ll discover what a true softie he is! Reese is the perfect mix of energy and couch potato. He LOVES playing with his fur friends in the backyard but also enjoys long snooze sessions on the couch. When relaxing, he’s happy to chew on a bone and watch TV — especially Hallmark movies! (He’ll even tolerate a football game or two for the guys, if he must!) While Reese’s trust issues stem from humans, no animals have ever done this boy wrong — he absolutely LOVES other animals! Whether it’s puppies, adult dogs, cats, or kittens, Reese has never met an animal he doesn’t adore! He’s been a foster brother to animals of all shapes, sizes, ages, temperaments, and energy levels, and has always been the gentle, dependable “big brother” they can look up to! True to his Shepherd nature, Reese is a caregiver — he can often be seen lovingly grooming his elderly foster sibling or keeping a watchful eye on his rambunctious foster kittens! If you already have other furbabies, Reese would be a wonderful addition! He has no food, toy, or water aggression and would integrates easily into a multi-pet home! Reese is also potty and crate trained! He knows the words “crate” and “place” as cues to go to his crate! Since he’s naturally curious, his foster mom crates him when she’s away — which he doesn’t mind at all, as he’ll happily nap until you return! If you’d rather take him along, that’s no problem either — Reese loves car rides and will gladly hop in the vehicle himself! He’s also great about keeping all four paws on the ground (which is great given his size)! Speaking of paws, he’s not the biggest fan of having his toes touched (but who is?), and he’s currently working on perfecting “heel” while walking! Reese is looking for a patient, German Shepherd–savvy adopter who will see past his initial walls and give him the time, structure, and love he needs to fully open up! With understanding and commitment, his future family will be rewarded with one of the most loyal, loving, and devoted companions imaginable! If you're interested in meeting handsome Reese, please fill out the application below! https://www.rubywhiskers.org/adopt Please only apply if you are ready to meet and welcome a new companion into your home within five days of approval. This dog is currently located in Chicago's southwest suburbs and can be seen by appointment once an adoption application is completed and approved by the rescue. Please note that we cannot hold dogs for any reason. Breed and Age Information: Unless the puppy was born in our care, we cannot guarantee the breed or age. Breed and age estimates are based on veterinary advice, shelter records, physical appearance, and information provided by previous owners. The adoption fee includes: Spay/neuter (performed at one of our partner veterinarians as scheduled by the rescue) Microchip Rabies vaccine DHPP vaccine Bordetella vaccine 4DX test (Heartworm, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichia, Lyme Disease) General wellness care, including deworming, heartworm prevention, and flea/tick prevention Your adoption fee also helps support medical care for other rescue animals, including heartworm treatments, surgeries, and emergency care. Story
Every team needs a heart player—and Maggie is ready to be yours. Meet Maggie Maggie’s story started with a rough opening quarter. She was found dumped in a neighborhood in March, estimated to be just 6 months old at the time, which puts her birthday around mid-August. Far too young to be out on her own, Maggie was left to fend for herself—but she’s proven she’s got the heart of a true comeback kid. Believed to be a shepherd mix, Maggie has all the qualities you want in a number-one draft pick. She’s smart, loving, eager to please, and always ready to stick close to her people. This girl is the ultimate teammate—she wants to be part of the huddle, part of the action, and right by your side through it all. Maggie thrives on attention and affection and clearly understands that being part of a family is the real championship goal. She’s the kind of dog who is happiest when she’s with her humans, soaking up love and giving it right back. Loyal, connected, and full of promise, Maggie is ready to trade her uncertain past for a permanent home field advantage. Now all she needs is a team to call her own. Breed & Size Disclaimer: We are not entirely sure what Maggie is mixed with. Based on her appearance, she is likely a shepherd-type mix, but this is our best guess. We cannot guarantee breed or adult size. We are always open to friendly input if you think you see something we don’t!

Story
Meet Sage! Sage is a gentle German Shepherd boy born at the end of April who is looking for a very special kind of home. He’s a sensitive soul who can be shy with new people and new situations, and he needs a patient, understanding family who will give him the time and space he needs to feel safe. Sage does best in a calm, predictable environment where he isn’t rushed to “be brave.” Trust is something he builds slowly, but it is incredibly meaningful once earned. Having a confident, friendly resident dog in the home is required for Sage. Another dog helps him feel secure, shows him the ropes, and gives him the reassurance he needs to come out of his shell. When Sage does trust you, he truly shines. He becomes loving, loyal, and deeply connected to his people, making him a wonderful companion for someone who understands that the best relationships are worth waiting for. His ideal family will celebrate small victories, move at his pace, and find joy in watching a shy puppy grow into a confident dog. Sage is looking for a home filled with patience, kindness, and another canine friend to guide him. In return, he’ll offer quiet devotion, gentle affection, and a bond that’s built on trust and understanding.   If you are interested in adopting/meeting this pup , please complete our online adoption application that you can find here: https://www.starfishanimalrescue.com/adopt/dog-adoption-application  . Your application will be reviewed by our team and if it is a good fit, we will send to the foster family to set up a meet! Story
Meet Barrett, a handsome 5-year-old German Shepherd weighing in at 82 lbs. This loyal boy is fully housebroken and ready to find his forever family. Barrett is the perfect mix of energetic and affectionate—he loves going for walks and spending time outdoors, especially in a securely fenced yard where he can explore and play to his heart’s content. He gets along well with cats and has done fine with other dogs. Because he can sometimes be a little mouthy when excited, Barrett would do best in a home without small children. He’ll thrive with an experienced owner who enjoys staying active and can provide structure, companionship, and lots of love. If you’re looking for a loyal adventure buddy who will also be your best friend, Barrett is your guy! The adoption fee of $150 will include spay/neuter, microchip, age appropriate/required vaccinations, treatment for heartworm and any other necessary medical treatment to assure a healthy new pup for your family. Story
Meet Luffy — a 31-lb, 1-year-old, neutered German Shepherd mix with a heart as big as his ears. Luffy didn’t always know what it meant to be a carefree pup. After spending much of his early life in a kennel, he’s now discovering just how wonderful the world can be — and watching him experience “firsts” has been pure magic. The first time he found a toy? Pure joy. The first time he mastered stairs? So proud. Now that he’s tasted freedom, Luffy is blossoming into the happiest little shadow you could ask for. He loves carrying his toys around the house, following his people wherever they go, and handing out the sweetest kisses. He’s house-trained and enjoys being outside — especially if you’re out there with him. More than anything, Luffy just wants to be near his family. Because of his past, he’s still learning that his people aren’t going anywhere. He may cry briefly when settling into his crate at night, but it doesn’t last long — soon he’s sleeping peacefully until morning. And when he hears the household waking up? That tail starts wagging like crazy, especially when he sees his favorite little human. He is incredibly gentle and loving with kids and has shown such a sweet, patient nature. Luffy also adores other dogs. When he met a pup his size, he was in absolute heaven having a playmate! With his youthful energy and playful spirit, he would thrive in an active home with older kids (8+) and maybe even a canine sibling to romp around with. Luffy is ready to leave to start his forever adventure with a family who will love him as much as he loves them. If you’re looking for a loyal, playful, affectionate best friend, Luffy is waiting to meet you.
