My name is Ellie and I'm a very good girl. I'm a 4 year old German Shepherd & King Shepherd mix and fully grown at 60 pounds so I'm on the smaller side for a Shepherd. I had a home but my family came upon some financial issues and I need to find a new family who will always be able to take care of me. I'm very well behaved and obedient and super smart - true to my German Shepherd breed. I'm also on the mellow side - not too much energy so I'm easy to live with. My ideal family will have past experience with Shepherds and a fully fenced in yard. I get along great with other dogs so can happily live with one or be a solo pup...I just want to be safe and part of a happy family. She's a young German Shepherd who is under-socialized and feeling overwhelmed in the shelter, but with familiar handlers she can soften and show her affectionate side-seeking closeness, allowing gentle petting, and hopping up to sit beside her person. Her former family described her as very loving once she warms up, and she enjoys toys and active play.My Ideal HomeBenji needs an experienced, adult-only home that understands fearful and defensive behavior and can move at her pace. A calm, quiet household with predictable routines, patient decompression time, and force-free, reward-based training will be essential. Benji should always have the choice to approach and interact-no pressure or surprises. Because she can be sensitive when startled and around valuable items, her adopter should be comfortable managing space, using trade-ups, and building trust gradually. Structured enrichment (food puzzles, safe chews, toy play) and confidence-building activities will help her thrive.Good with Kids?No. Benji is recommended for a home with no children under 13 due to fearful/defensive behavior and sensitivity when startled.Good with Other Pets?Benji should be the only pet in the home. There is a reported bite incident with a familiar dog related to a resource, and she has shown resource guarding with food/treats. Zani's al fresco Summer Adoptions follow us on FB to find us this summer as we will try new locations to meet the needs of NYC and support the little stores:) We are delighted to announce the upcoming arrival of tripod Vicki, a charming and energetic 8M old 40lbs puppy from Egypt, who will be joining our community of handicapped dogs in October. Vicki's history is marked by a traumatic experience, having been rescued from a dire situation involving a severely injured leg infested with maggots and pus, which required amputation to ensure her survival. Happily, Vicki has grown into a sweet and engaging companion, exhibiting strong attachment to her human family and displaying excellent compatibility with both people and dogs. All dogs are located in NY/NJ area All our puppies need puppy play dates/doggy facetime so we recommend homes with other pups or daily interactions to keep them tired out, happy and social.
