Story
Meet Benny Benny is a stunning, approximately 2-year-old male Shepherd mix who quite literally showed up one morning in our police kennels, scared, confused, and with no note, no explanation, and no clue how he got there. What we do know is that Benny didn’t deserve to be left behind.Benny is a very big boy, weighing around 85 pounds, tall, lanky, and all legs. He is one of the tallest “Shepherds” we’ve ever seen. Sadly, Benny does show signs consistent with poor breeding and hip dysplasia, but that hasn’t stopped his spirit one bit. We’re seeing more dogs with genetic issues like hip dysplasia, often linked to poor breeding practices. Responsible breeding matters. Dogs pay the price when it doesn’t. Due to his size and hip issues, Benny will have to stay on the leaner side, the rest of his life. If he becomes overweight, it’s only going to hurt him in the long run. He can’t hold up that much weight with his hips and legs. He can still live a long life and be very happy. He will probably be on joint supplement pills the rest of his life however they are not very expensive.Because Benny is such a large, powerful, high-energy dog who came to us with no manners or structure, we knew the best thing we could do for him was set him up for long-term success. Benny is currently enrolled in professional training at Mason Dixon K9, where he is learning his commands, boundaries, and proper manners, and we’re told he is doing remarkably well. He is incredibly smart, eager to learn, and thriving with consistency.Benny is not quite ready for adoption yet, as he still has a few weeks of training to complete. However, applications are now open. His future adopter will also participate in a training session to ensure they fully understand the commands and structure Benny has been taught.Despite his size, Benny is a total love. He bonds quickly, loves playing fetch, adores belly rubs, and is happiest curling up beside his person. He is loyal, affectionate, and deeply connected, the kind of dog who will choose his person and give them his whole heart. We may never know how Benny ended up here, but we do know this:He is going to leave better than he arrived, confident, trained, and ready for the right home.

Story
Seasons greetings from the adorable Mr Nimbus! This sweet boy who seeks to steal your heart & lap is a 7 month old, 37lb shepherd mix, precently neutered & up to date on all shots/vaccines as well! He is moderately playful & proper lover boy who loves to wrap up a short play session with a long couch snuggle. He loves all humans/children & gets along well with most cats & dogs. He is a puppy & his manners are still something he is learning when it comes to respecting some of his grumpier elders. With cats, he may want to chase them to play. For his age training is going very well. He is attentive & very food motivated. He has most major commands down, does well in his crate (though he can get stressed if alone too long and may have an accident), has learned to communicate when he needs to go outside. This cutie gets an upset tummy when traveling in a car, but we are hoping we will grow out of it. This cutie is being temporarily fostered in Mechanicsburg Pa. If you are interested, apply at  www.pack9rescue.org New Oxford PA 17350; LIC # 9736   We are PA Caring for K-9's, an all-breed dog rescue that is solely run by volunteers. Most of our dogs are rescued from high kill shelters in the South. If the dog is posted, they are still available! Once arriving, these dogs enter foster homes, as we do not have a shelter. We cannot adopt out dogs to a home with dogs that are not fixed or up to date on shots. If interested in adopting, please submit an application online at www.pack9rescue.org. Our adoption fee for altered dogs is $350 and goes directly to saving the lives of more dogs.  Our adoption fee for unaltered puppies will be $400 which includes a refundable $50 deposit upon receipt of spay/neuter certificate. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. All of the animals posted on our site have been temperament tested. While not all are in the immediate area, once we have processed and approved your application, we will move the dog to our adoptive area for you to meet, greet and hopefully adopt. Sometimes we will have more than one application on a dog. That does not mean it automatically goes to another family but you should be aware of the fact that until you are approved and set up for the meet/greet.. the dog could get adopted by another applicant.NOTE- BIRDIE IS LISTED AS A COURTESY FOR ANOTHER RESCUE ORGANIZATION.  PLEASE SEE CONTACT INFO BELOW.Birdie is a young adult female shepherd/boxer–type mix with a sweet, people-oriented temperament and a lot of potential in the right home. She is affectionate once comfortable, bonds quickly to calm and consistent adults, and clearly wants to engage and please her handler.Birdie is a high-energy dog who requires regular, purposeful exercise and mental engagement. She plays enthusiastically and can be a bit rough in her play style, which is appropriate for her energy level and breed mix. With continued training and structure, this should improve as she gains impulse control. She has shown no signs of aggression toward people, including children, but she is still developing body control and spatial awareness. Because of this, she would likely do best in a home with older, dog-savvy children who understand boundaries, rather than very young children who are at floor level. With supervision and training, she could do well in a family environment that understands active dogs.Birdie has made excellent progress with crate training and uses the crate well as a place to settle and relax. She is beginning to learn place work and basic obedience, and she has shown that she is a fast learner once she is comfortable and understands expectations. She responds best to calm, patient guidance and benefits from structure and consistency. She does not appear to be destructive or an anxious chewer; however, she enjoys appropriate chew toys and bones and settles well with them. Once the environment is calm, she is able to relax indoors near her people.Birdie’s response to cats is currently unknown. She has had limited exposure to other dogs; one brief introduction suggested she may be somewhat reactive, but not overtly aggressive. Slow, structured introductions would be recommended to assess compatibility with other dogs.Overall, Birdie is a kind, energetic dog who is trying hard and making progress. She would likely thrive in an active home with an experienced, patient handler who enjoys training, can provide consistent structure, and understands the needs of a young, high-energy dogBirdie is 2y old and 62 lbs. She is spayed, and her adoption includes a microchip with lifetime registration, 4dx SNAP heartworm test, DHLPP, Bordetella, and rabies and parasite control. Also included in the adoption are 30 days of Pet First Pet Insurance, a new lead and collar, and an adoption kit.Apply online:https://www.highlandcountyhumanesociety.org/available-animals/To contact us, please send an email or FB message to:Email: info@highlandcountyhumanesociety.orgFacebook: www.facebook.com/HighlandHumaneWebsite: www.highlandcountyhumanesociety.orgVisit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.January 14, 2026, 11:32 pm

Story
Meet Knox. Our best friend, our protector, our own personal nut case. Knox is a good dog who has a colorful past. He was locked in a cage throughout the majority of his puppy years by previous owners. Thus, he knew no manners when we took him in. We got him trained by state-line canine and he got better. He is a very high-drive, treat loving boy. He needs lots of attention and exercise. This is NOT a city dog nor an apartment dog. He needs an owner who is prepared to be consistent with him and give him the love and attention he needs. He does okay with other dogs, but would be better in an only dog situation. I will need to screen the adopter before they take him, as this dog deserves more than another mediocre owner. He needs a loving family who will designate him as part of the family as we did. Unfortunately, he is just not the right dog for our family and our situation. Come meet him and see what this boy could mean for you and your family.
