Story
Meet Nacho, a handsome 3-year-old Lab/German Shepherd with a heart of gold. Nacho's future forever family will hit the jackpot with this loyal boy who is currently working on his manners at a board & train program. It's not often you find a rescue pup with the training that Nacho has! Nacho holds a special place in our hearts. Nacho was adopted as a puppy by a family with young children, another dog, and a cat. Nacho grew up with this family and loved them dearly, but after three years, they abruptly surrendered Nacho to the shelter, citing that he had developed resource guarding and anxiety-based behaviors. After discussions with the family, it became clear to us that Nacho was not receiving the attention, exercise, or structure to allow him to flourish. Facing euthanasia at the overcrowded shelter, Justice for Paws arranged for Nacho to attend a three week intensive board & train program to get him back on the right track. We're so happy to report that Nacho has been thriving in his program, and his trainer says he's a loving boy who enjoys playing with the other dogs and listens so, so well. In his trainer's words, "This dog is awesome! He does everything I ask of him. He does still get nervous around new people, but once you are in his circle of trust, you are good." Nacho's lucky adopters will receive a free training session with his current trainer to help him adapt to his new home. While Nacho is still weary of strangers, he is your most loyal companion once he trusts you. He is house-trained, neutered, and up to date on vaccinations and preventatives. Nacho currently weighs 90 lbs but could stand to lose 10-15 (couldn't we all, Nacho). The ideal home for Nacho would be with a loving family who can commit to giving him the exercise and mental stimulation he needs. He's the perfect mix of energetic and cuddly - he loves to go for walks then snuggle up on the couch with his people. His new family should be patient and understanding as he adjusts and works through his anxiety issues. While not required, experience with shepherd breeds would be beneficial in understanding his smart, loyal nature. Nacho can go to a home either as an only dog or with other siblings (cats, dogs, or even chickens!), though he'll need proper, supervised introductions to ensure everyone gets along well. He can be afraid of dogs at first but then loves to play. His play style may be too much for small or senior dogs. Young children may be too unpredictable for Nacho, but we think he'd be great with older kids. Please help give Nacho the second chance he deserves. Story
Winkle has a lot of energy and needs a fair amount of exercise. He is playful and enjoys active play. He loves to retrieve balls in the yard as well as chase squirrels. He is very sweet and loving. Winkle knows sit, stay, down, off and come. He also will sit patiently and give you each paw while you clean or dry his feat. He is housebroken and crate trained and does very well in his crate overnight. Winkle is apprehensive when new people first enter the home and needs a patient person who will work with him. He adjusts quickly after his initial barking reaction. He walks well on the leash but needs coaxing to get in the car and is making good progress. He needs to be in a quieter home without children or teens running around and a fenced yard to run around and play in. He is very patient with other dogs, and would do very well in a home with another active dog. He was in a home with cats and did very well. Questions About this Animal? Come meet me during our events Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM - 4 PM at the Homeward Trails Manny Law Adoption Center, 11116 Fairfax Station Rd, Fairfax Station, VA. If you are interested in adopting this dog, please fill out our dog adoption questionnaire and e-mail any questions to: adoptioncenter@homewardtrails.org PLEASE VISIT THIS WEBSITE TO FIND THE ADOPTION QUESTIONNAIRE: http://www.homewardtrails.org/adopt-a-pet/adoption-forms/ LOCATION: Adoption Center ADOPTION COORDINATOR: Adoption Center ADOPTION FEE: Thanks to a generous donation, Rosie's adoption fee has been waived! ROSIE IS ALSO PART OF THE REWARDS PROGRAM AND HER ADOPTION FEE IS WAIVED. WE WILL ALSO PAY MY FOSTER OR ADOPTER $500. HT has a number of dogs that need very special homes. These dogs have been failed by humans along the way, leaving them homeless and with issues from their treatment. We'll be honest. Some of them are real jerks. But not always. And not to everyone. Not everyone can be charming ALL the time, right? Others are just fearful and don't like other animals because they have had a bad interaction at some point. Some of them love other dogs but are just plain scared of everything. But all of them are good on the inside. And we believe that ALL of them deserve a chance at life and love. And we're looking to find the right human out there to make that happen. But competition is tough. And they're up against small, well-behaved doggies...so we are offering incentives for special humans willing to give these pooches a chance. WE WANT YOU! ***We are paying $500 to any approved foster or adopter of our REWARDS dogs.*** The human will also get ongoing training support, all supplies covered and a $25 Amazon gift card each month for 6 months. You will learn and grow. You will be doing a world of good for a dog who has really had it rough in life. ESTIMATE WEIGHT FULL GROWN: 45 lbs.
