ABOUT THIS ANIMAL:
Does your best friend need a best friend? Having a hard time keeping up with
your dog always wanting to play? Tired of going to the dog park, only to arrive
and there aren't any fun dogs? Why not watch your pups bound around your
own backyard, having the time of their lives?
Enter Scout, your dog's new best buddy by day, and the sweetest, softest lap
dog by night. He loves to play, loves every dog he ever met, loves his human
friends, and is a top rated cuddler. He also loves to hike, jog, attend doggie
daycare, chew on bones, and will do anything for a treat.
He's a graduate of two obedience courses and has had a ton of training at
home. He knows many commands, is crate trained, and has fantastic recall
(coming when he is called, even when chasing a deer or rabbit or playing with
a dog). He is very trainable; he loves to learn and to please.
He is on the submissive side and adjusts well to dogs with different play
styles. One of his trainers said his ability to read cues from other dogs and
adapt is exceptional. Although a playful dog friend would keep him busy, he
would do ok as only dog if provided with enough exercise and mental
stimulation. He has lived with another dog and loved it, and has also lived with
cats and done well with them!
He likes to get up first thing in the morning and cuddle. He is happiest when
he's either snuggling with a human buddy on the couch, playing with a dog
friend, out on a walk, or getting treats. He has a ton of love to give, and has a
super sweet and delightful personality.
Occasionally there will be a person that he is nervous around, but for the most
part he does well even in crowded situations. He has had training specifically
to help him stay calm and check in with his owner when something makes
him nervous and is doing great with it. Due to his submissive nature, he feels
most happy and relaxed when there are rules and structure rather than being
allowed to do anything he wants.
Some final nice things about Scout: he is really great walking on leash and not
pulling (even if there's a bunny rabbit), doesn't eat food left on counters or
beg, is not at all picky about food, never has any kind of accidents indoors,
and isn't mischievous.
A few quotes from trainers who have worked with Scout "He's such a good
dog. He really deserves a family. His training is so good! I'm very impressed,
and I think it should transfer well to his new home with some help.
"Scout is suuuuch a well behaved dog, you've done such an incredible job with
his training. Seriously!!! He is SO good with other dogs. He's a master of body
language and how to respond to it, and so amazingly stable and neutral.
ESTIMATE WEIGHT FULL GROWN: 65 lbs
KNOWN WITH DOGS: Scout gets along great with other dogs; he almost
always wants to play with them but is submissive and responsive to their
signals. He likes both wrestling and running and is pretty gentle with smaller
or lower-energy dogs. He has lived with a bossy dog who always took his toys
and bones from him and he rolled with it very well.
KNOWN WITH CATS: Scout has lived in a home with cats and would do great
with a social and playful cat. He loves cats and gets very excited when he
sees them. However, he is responsive when told to "leave it if he wants to
greet a cat who is afraid of him.
KNOWN WITH KIDS: Scout has done well with meeting kids of all ages
(including babies). We recommend older kids because Scout enjoys
destroying and eating stuffed animals and soft plastic toys. He has
sometimes been nervous when young kids have grabbed him from behind or
run around screaming.
KNOWN COMMANDS: Scout is very human-focused, treat motivated, and
responsive to commands. He learns quickly! He responds to his name when
we need his attention, and knows: here /come, heel, sit, down, touch, paw,
drop it, watch me, leave it, place, and stay. He has an exceptional amount of
training; and he comes with two free additional training sessions (one in
Sterling, VA, and one in Alexandria, VA (or your home if in their service area)).
KNOWN HOUSEBREAKING and/OR CRATING: Scout is fully housebroken (no
accidents), and he does fine in a crate. He sleeps in a crate at night, and stays
in a crate when his foster parents are out of the house. He has also been fine
when left alone out of his crate. He does sometimes whine when crated if his
parents are still at home (for example while his foster parent does an exercise
video) but settles eventually.
KNOWN LIKES: Scout loves hiking, going to the dog park (or playing with dogs
anywhere), playing with toys (indestructible ones, or closely supervised with
things like rope bones), having houseguests, and having a chance to run
around and play! He is very smart and loves training, working out puzzles, and
"scent work (finding kibble or treats we've hidden for him). He also loves both
walks in the city and hikes in nature. He does best with at least two good play
sessions and walks per day. He loves cuddling and resting his head on your
lap.
KNOWN DISLIKES: Scout does not like thunder. He doesn't like getting his
nails trimmed, and is working on staying calm during trims.
