Story
Oversized teddy bear seeks snuggle partner. Cuddly, smart, and eager to please, swipe right if you can handle this high energy heart with a soft side. Hatchi’s story is heartbreaking — he came into the shelter with his brother, but when their owner returned, they only took his brother… leaving Hatchi behind in a high-kill shelter. He soon found himself on the euthanasia list. Hatchi is now in a loving foster home and is looking for his forever home where he can feel safe, loved, and supported again. Hatchi does require eye drops daily for the remainder of his life. In our dream world, Hatchi would find a human that would help him feel confident and secure in a FINALLY stable environnment.

Story
Meet Aries, the akita! Aries came into the Shelter by no fault of her own – her previous guardian was having financial instability and were unable to give Aries the care they know she deserves. Aries is an adolescent who is still working on her life skills and manners. Sometimes her exuberance gets the best of her and results in some chewing of things that aren’t exactly meant for pups. Adopters should puppy-proof their house to prepare for taking home Aries as well as have lots of appropriate options for Aries to chew on and play with. She has met other dogs and enjoyed playing with them in her previous home, but has not lived with a pup. She does not have any history with felines. Aries was described as house trained in the previous home and would bark when she needed to go out. Staff have observed that Aries has a bubbly outgoing energy. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!Now through February 15th, all adoption fees are reduced to $33 - come to the Shelter today to adopt your very own Valentine! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Meet Nike, the Akita Siberian Husky mix. Nike arrived at the Shelter by no fault of her own – her previous guardian was unable to continue caring for her. Nike has been described as energetic and friendly with people. She enjoys going for walks and runs. She’s lived with children ages 5, 8, and 9 years of age as well as teenagers and did well. She was crated when left alone for a few hours and was eager to reconnect with her family when they came home. Nike is a smart cookie and comes with a whole vocabulary of things she knows including: “sit”, “lay down”, “high five”, “shake”, “wait”, “slow down”, and “come here”. She would love to work her brain with her new family (and bond through positive reinforcement based training. Nike enjoys riding int eh car on her way to adventures. She can be selective in her dog friends (liking some but not others) so if there are any resident dogs in the home, it would be recommended they meet prior to adoption. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. Story
Meet Emi Emi’s sleek, brindle coat is a thing of beauty and so magnificent to behold. Engaging, charismatic, gregarious, and spirited are the first things you sense about her from the moment she enters a room. Emi exudes a brand of joy that makes her impossible to resist! Not until you witness her graceful elegance and see a bit of frost around her muzzle, do you realize she is a senior beauty with an abundance of life experiences to share. She’s 8 yrs old and has found herself homeless, but she’s seen enough in life to know there’s still a wonderous journey ahead. She is a lover of people and she’d much rather be enjoying a fun adventure with you by her side on interesting walks or trips to the beach, than be left at home alone. She needs to be an only dog and is not suitable with cats. She is approximately 60 lbs. and seems unaware she has some arthritis and hip dysplasia. But as you can see, she enjoys playing with her toys and doing tricks for treats. Her healthy curiosity keeps her engaged in life’s adventures, though she also loves her beauty naps. Please don’t let her age deter you from considering giving her a home. Her heart is overflowing with love. If you are interested in Emi, please complete our adoption application in the link below. Story
Jabulani, lovingly nicknamed Jabu for short, is a sweet girl looking to affectionately nuzzle her way into your heart! This precious girl absolutely adores being in the company of her human companions. She greets everyone she meets with a curly tailed tail wag and lots of slobbery kisses. She also makes sure to show off her agile spins and funny vocalizations to wow her new friends. She is an energetic and active pup that would love to go for long walks, spend some time playing fetch in the yard, training using positive reinforcement methods, and enjoying a nice food puzzle. Jabu is also a gold medalist at tug-of-war and an expert in squeeky toys. You can see Jabu in action in this youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/j9ZpmzAYeRg Petite and beautiful at 62 pounds and 11 years, Jabu prefers to be the apple of her person's eye, for this reason she would be perfectly happy as a solo dog. This elegant and refined young lady would prefer a home without tiny little hands as she enjoys her space after meals and that can be hard for kiddos to understand. Jabu really loves her people and can be heard whining and complaining when left at home alone. With some support from our behavior team you should be able to work through her very mild separation anxiety.Overall, Jabu is a smart and bouncy girl, spinning around when she gets excited and even loves exploring the beach and dipping her paws in the ocean with her humans. This sweet girl joined us after her guardian sadly passed away unexpectedly. Are you interested in learning more about Jabulani? Story
Kya was born on October 12, 2020. We need to rehome her due to us relocating. Kya is the sweetest husky you’ll ever meet. She doesn’t bark, she doesn’t really need much exercise (she’ll often walk US back home when she’s done), and she is just very chill. All she needs is a window and something to lay on, and she’ll be sunbathing all day. She loves kisses, hugs (she’ll put her head in your chest), and getting her paws rubbed. She can tell if you’re sad before you even know it. She loves ice cubes, she loves sleeping on a pillow and being tucked into the blanket. She truly is the most non husky, husky you’ll ever meet. She is a small husky, only about 32 lbs. She is house trained and potty trained. We will miss Kya so much, but hope that she will be with a loving family.

Story
Meet Theia and Apollo, a bonded pair of purebred Siberian Huskies, 3.5 years old, raised together since six weeks old. Calm, loyal, and emotionally balanced in sync, crate-trained, house-trained, and know many commands: no, sit, stay, heal, cross, and more. They rarely bark—only when truly alerted—and are friendly with people, dogs, and even delivery drivers. Theia is alpha but gentle. Apollo is curious and playful. They enjoy walks, hikes, and quiet time at home. Their favorite games include hide-and-seek with treats, ball fetch and backyard play. Apollo often sits like a person on the porch, while Theia peeks through curtains to watch the world. They are healthy, well-mannered, and thrive in a home with a yard or cozy space. Ideal for families with older kids or couples who enjoy both adventure and calm. They must be adopted together. If you’re looking for peaceful, loving companions who bring joy and loyalty every day, Thea & Apollo are ready to meet you and bring love to your home.
