Meet Courage, the dog who discovered his inner superstar! When he first arrived, Courage was a bit shy, but those days are long gone. Now he’s a confident, happy guy who thinks everyone is his friend—because, well, they are! He loves playgroup time with other dogs, struts proudly on his walks, and makes it his personal mission to say hello to every person in the lobby. Volunteers love how fun and easy he is to walk, and when it’s playtime, you’ll find Courage happily rummaging through the toy bin to choose his favorites. Looking for a cheerful, social companion? Story
Oversized teddy bear seeks snuggle partner. Cuddly, smart, and eager to please, swipe right if you can handle this high energy heart with a soft side. Hatchi’s story is heartbreaking — he came into the shelter with his brother, but when their owner returned, they only took his brother… leaving Hatchi behind in a high-kill shelter. He soon found himself on the euthanasia list. Hatchi is now in a loving foster home and is looking for his forever home where he can feel safe, loved, and supported again. Hatchi does require eye drops daily for the remainder of his life. In our dream world, Hatchi would find a human that would help him feel confident and secure in a FINALLY stable environnment.

Story
Meet Nike, the Akita Siberian Husky mix. Nike arrived at the Shelter by no fault of her own – her previous guardian was unable to continue caring for her. Nike has been described as energetic and friendly with people. She enjoys going for walks and runs. She’s lived with children ages 5, 8, and 9 years of age as well as teenagers and did well. She was crated when left alone for a few hours and was eager to reconnect with her family when they came home. Nike is a smart cookie and comes with a whole vocabulary of things she knows including: “sit”, “lay down”, “high five”, “shake”, “wait”, “slow down”, and “come here”. She would love to work her brain with her new family (and bond through positive reinforcement based training. Nike enjoys riding int eh car on her way to adventures. She can be selective in her dog friends (liking some but not others) so if there are any resident dogs in the home, it would be recommended they meet prior to adoption. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Jabulani, lovingly nicknamed Jabu for short, is a sweet girl looking to affectionately nuzzle her way into your heart! This precious girl absolutely adores being in the company of her human companions. She greets everyone she meets with a curly tailed tail wag and lots of slobbery kisses. She also makes sure to show off her agile spins and funny vocalizations to wow her new friends. She is an energetic and active pup that would love to go for long walks, spend some time playing fetch in the yard, training using positive reinforcement methods, and enjoying a nice food puzzle. Jabu is also a gold medalist at tug-of-war and an expert in squeeky toys. You can see Jabu in action in this youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/j9ZpmzAYeRg Petite and beautiful at 62 pounds and 11 years, Jabu prefers to be the apple of her person's eye, for this reason she would be perfectly happy as a solo dog. This elegant and refined young lady would prefer a home without tiny little hands as she enjoys her space after meals and that can be hard for kiddos to understand. Jabu really loves her people and can be heard whining and complaining when left at home alone. With some support from our behavior team you should be able to work through her very mild separation anxiety.Overall, Jabu is a smart and bouncy girl, spinning around when she gets excited and even loves exploring the beach and dipping her paws in the ocean with her humans. This sweet girl joined us after her guardian sadly passed away unexpectedly. Are you interested in learning more about Jabulani? Story
Kuma is a male Akita Mix that is about one to two years old. He still squats to pee! He is such a sweet boy with a happy-go-lucky temperament and medium energy. He has shown to do well with other dogs big and small. He is playful when they want to play and takes social cues well. He is very well-mannered. Kuma loves to do tricks for treats, go for walks, and get all the pets and attention he can.  Our shelter is overflowing and we are having to double/triple up on kennels. Kuma is in desperate need to find his positive outcome.   Please let us know if you can help this sweet boy!
