Story
Oversized teddy bear seeks snuggle partner. Cuddly, smart, and eager to please, swipe right if you can handle this high energy heart with a soft side. Hatchi’s story is heartbreaking — he came into the shelter with his brother, but when their owner returned, they only took his brother… leaving Hatchi behind in a high-kill shelter. He soon found himself on the euthanasia list. Hatchi is now in a loving foster home and is looking for his forever home where he can feel safe, loved, and supported again. Hatchi does require eye drops daily for the remainder of his life. In our dream world, Hatchi would find a human that would help him feel confident and secure in a FINALLY stable environnment.

Story
Meet Nike, the Akita Siberian Husky mix. Nike arrived at the Shelter by no fault of her own – her previous guardian was unable to continue caring for her. Nike has been described as energetic and friendly with people. She enjoys going for walks and runs. She’s lived with children ages 5, 8, and 9 years of age as well as teenagers and did well. She was crated when left alone for a few hours and was eager to reconnect with her family when they came home. Nike is a smart cookie and comes with a whole vocabulary of things she knows including: “sit”, “lay down”, “high five”, “shake”, “wait”, “slow down”, and “come here”. She would love to work her brain with her new family (and bond through positive reinforcement based training. Nike enjoys riding int eh car on her way to adventures. She can be selective in her dog friends (liking some but not others) so if there are any resident dogs in the home, it would be recommended they meet prior to adoption. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Meet Emi Emi’s sleek, brindle coat is a thing of beauty and so magnificent to behold. Engaging, charismatic, gregarious, and spirited are the first things you sense about her from the moment she enters a room. Emi exudes a brand of joy that makes her impossible to resist! Not until you witness her graceful elegance and see a bit of frost around her muzzle, do you realize she is a senior beauty with an abundance of life experiences to share. She’s 8 yrs old and has found herself homeless, but she’s seen enough in life to know there’s still a wonderous journey ahead. She is a lover of people and she’d much rather be enjoying a fun adventure with you by her side on interesting walks or trips to the beach, than be left at home alone. She needs to be an only dog and is not suitable with cats. She is approximately 60 lbs. and seems unaware she has some arthritis and hip dysplasia. But as you can see, she enjoys playing with her toys and doing tricks for treats. Her healthy curiosity keeps her engaged in life’s adventures, though she also loves her beauty naps. Please don’t let her age deter you from considering giving her a home. Her heart is overflowing with love. If you are interested in Emi, please complete our adoption application in the link below. Shadow Nose's Story Meet Shadow Nose: Your Future Best Friend! 💖

Hi there! My name is Shadow Nose and I’ve been waiting patiently for the perfect person to bring me into their family. Could that be you?

I’m a 4-year-old, 53-pound, Akita German Shepherd Mix with a heart full of love and a tail that never stops wagging! My foster family says I’m incredibly sweet, affectionate, and well-adjusted with just the right amount of energy to keep you smiling every day.
Here’s a video to help you get to know me better: https://youtu.be/lvdhggj4fPo
🩺 My Special Needs
I have been diagnosed with mega-esophagus, a condition that means my throat is oversized and I need a little extra care when eating. But don’t worry — it’s super manageable! My foster family and veterinarian have created an easy routine that keeps me happy and healthy. I even have a fancy custom feeding station (built just for me!) where I eat and drink comfortably.

🐾 Why You’ll Love Me
From my captivating smile to my playful spirit, I’m the kind of dog who lights up a room.
I’m:
- Affectionate: I’ll happily cuddle up with you after a fun day.
- Energetic and playful: I love tossing my toys around and trying my best at fetch!
- Learning to have good canine manner
- I’m crate trained, know how to use a doggy door and can be left home alone without any issues.

 🌟 A Star Companion
I’m great with adults, strangers and kids and I even love car rides! One of my previous fosters took me to the Veteran’s hospital, where I brought smiles to everyone’s faces. At home, I’m bouncy and playful, but I also know how to wind down with a cozy nap in my dog bed.

🐕 My Ideal Home
I’d love to be your one-and-only furry friend, but with the right introductions, I might get along with another dog. I have "bossy" tendencies! I haven’t met any cats yet, so I’m not sure how I’d feel about them. My moderate energy level makes me a great fit for most homes and I promise to fill yours with love and laughter.

💖 Let’s Make It Happen!
If you’re looking for a loyal, loving companion, I’m your girl. I’ll warm your heart with my adorable smile and keep you entertained with my goofy antics. Check out my video of me tossing my toys around — you’ll see how much fun we could have together!

Don’t let my special needs hold you back—I’m one of a kind and ready to join your family. I can’t wait to meet you!

Story
3 yr old white M Siberian Husky Notes from his foster:  Chip is a very loving and intelligent. What an amazing dog! He has so much love to give, yet at the same time he has high energy! The husky traits are definitely there like talking to you, of which is  moaning and somewhat of a soft howl. His new adopters should be aware of what those traits are and with any negative ones he is trainable. But it needs to be a constant reminder to him, he is very trainable as an intelligent pup could be! He loves laying on the couch next to his human. He'll either lay his head on you or lay with half of his body on you, which means he wants loving!   The shelter estimates Chip to be 3 years, I challenge his age to be at least a year    younger. I've looked at his teeth, evaluated his boundless energy, and when playing with other dogs, he acts like a pup.   He does well with indoor cats, but he sometimes goes up and sniffs them like he's checking to make sure they are ok.  If he is outside and one runs away he will chase it -supervision is a must   It's not a good idea to have small animals like rabbits, guinea pigs or hamsters. Due to the huskey's high prey drive! Chip would be great in an active home that loves the outdoors and is busy with outdoors activities with him, like hiking or swimming. He loves water so much that he plays in his water bowl and likes to bite at the water coming out of the hose. Thankfully he's learning to do it outside in his water bowl only. The daily walks which    he needs, he has been doing extremely well on not pulling, except at the beginning or if another owner/dog is walking by. He'll pull because he is very excited to meet them. I have him sit and calm him down until they have gone by. He loves car rides to a fault. If a neighbor gets in their car and starts it up he will continue running around the car until you call him off. But keep attention on him because he's known to run after the car, like let me in, you forgot me!   Chip would do best in a cold weather environment. We haven't had time to take him to the snow but I can imagine him loving it! He loves to go out on the deck late at night. He lays with his nose in the air, wide awake enjoying the cold night. Then he comes in and either jumps on the bed partially laying on me. Or if I'm rolled    over towards the middle of the bed, he'll lay on the bed along the edge. Always waiting to be petted. And yes, we do have other pets but once he moved in, he took over everything! If something is on the floor and becomes missing whether it's a dog item or an item of his human, Chip has most likely picked it up and moved it somewhere else. He does know how to share. He is not food aggressive, will let my labradoodle eat out of his bowl with him. And he shares all of the other pets toys he took over. When all the pets are resting or it is bedtime, his high energy is gone and he calms down to a resting state, sleeping too.   He does need a home with another younger high energy dog to play with, my 2 15 year old Yorkies are not playmates. My 5 year oldlabradoodle adopted as apuppy    during COVID did not learn how to play with dogs. She sure knows how to play with Chip whether she wants to or not. She always runs out of energy way before he does. Chip might even bless a family with another high energy dog. They will wear each other out. And eventhough my Yorkies don't play he has learned to leave them alone occasionally forgetting and dangles a toy over their head as they show their growling teeth, so he moves on.   Chip is very friendly with people one of the only things he hasn't learned is not to jump up on the person. He's so excited to meet someone new,  that to get their attention he thinks they needs to be eye to eye. Kids he has had little exposure. He will do well with kids just needs an adult there to watch over until he calms down with his     excitement. He is also vey dog friendly unless the other dog turns aggressive on him he will respond back to correct Most of all he becomes very attached to his humans and loves them MOST of all !!!   ##2559846##
