Story

Eva was initially a stray and since adoption has shown significant separation anxiety. She is incredibly sweet and loving but the separation anxiety has been a challenge for our family. She will pace for hours and has on occasion scratched at the door or window while we have left her home. We’ve also tried to leave her in the backyard for short periods of times (i.e. school drop off) and she has jumped our nearly 6 foot fence. She has always been good with other dogs. She loves belly rubs, going to the dog park and playing tug. She also loves walking and is a good running buddy, but she’s also very strong and is difficult to handle because she pulls a lot. For the right family she would be an amazing dog, but unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be our family despite many efforts. Perhaps a family with more experience with a dog would be a good start - she is our first and we are out of our depth and really want her to thrive.

Kazhem is a very handsome, somewhat shy Akita mix who warms up slowly to new people. Meet HIROMI HIROMI was turned into the shelter as a found dog. No one ever came for her. Despite being failed by her former person, this sweetheart remains devoted and loving. After Hiromi’s arrival she was initially timid and lacked confidence. She can still be somewhat apprehensive but she has opened up and trusted us enough to let her true colors shine! She is silly, sensitive, refreshingly affectionate, playful and a free spirit. Her absolute favorite past time is to be showered with love and give it in return. Her gentle, resilient nature is inspiring but not surprising. Hiromi is very communicative by expressing a multitude of emotions with her eyes. Her body language is inviting and she understands how to use it to subtly let you know what’s on her mind. She is also an Akita so stubbornness is part of her DNA! Her ideal adopter should have a calm home environment and be able to provide consistency and a daily routine, where she can continue to expand her horizons. Hiromi gets excited for her daily walks and is a great traveler! She seems non-reactive to other dogs and might do well with a mellow male dog. She is approx 4 yrs old and weighs 57 lbs. After multiple attempts, the staff finally reached the owners. Their response was they were not coming back for him. He is a gentle giant with a gregarious, carefree attitude and is eager to learn and experience the world. He is game for adventure and deserves to have that special someone to accompany him in life. Tobi is playful and has a welcoming aura about him. He also has an unabashed, confident side to him. At the Placer SPCA in Roseville, California, we have a 5-year old, white female Akita up for adoption. Her name is Pearl and she is very sweet and loves to play. She was surrendered to us when her family had to move into an apartment and she did not meet the weight requirement. We think she would do best in an Akita-experienced home where she can be the only dog as she has not been friendly with the dogs she has met, though she was in a home with another Akita when she was younger as well as a small dog. She also does not like her feet touched and has some resource guarding with treats. She has great manners and is easy to walk. As a matter of fact, you don’t even need to toss the ball to me, I will just grab it, toss it in the air and entertain myself! I'm a professional dog trainer who is currently fostering Asha, a dog I've been working with for a few months. Her previous owners had to give her up, they were elderly and had mobility issues so were unable to keep up with her energetic personality. Asha is about 5-6 years old but still has a very youthful personality. She loves to be outside and explore and always has a smile on her face when she's on a walk! She's been coexisting peacefully with my dogs but I've never seen her around cats. She is a bit slow to warm up to new people but she is very expressive and affectionate once she befriends you. She has a bit of sensitivity to being pet or handled too quickly/roughly in certain situations so a family with young children might not be the best match. I've been working with her everyday to desensitize her to that sort of thing and also warm up to strangers quicker and I'd be happy to continue working with her new owners post-adoption absolutely free of charge!
