Story

JB is a sensitive, intelligent dog who is slowly learning to trust the world again. He recently made the long trip back from Iowa and handled it without any issues. Since arriving, he has begun settling into a predictable routine and has made strong bonds with the resident dogs—especially the Malinois and a female German Shepherd he absolutely adores. JB is skittish by nature and will need a patient adopter who can give him the space and time he needs. He is wary of new people and uncomfortable with handling. While he wags his tail and shows clear affection toward his trusted person, he does not enjoy being touched and often stiffens when petted. He will lick your hand when you’re not looking, but he’s not yet comfortable taking treats from hands. With the right person, he may continue to grow, but he will need an adopter who respects his boundaries. JB is not recommended for homes with men, as he is generally fearful of them. A female-only home is ideal. He should also not live with cats or young children. Teenagers may be okay as long as they understand his space and needs. On the bright side, JB does beautifully with other dogs and may benefit from living with a confident canine companion. He enjoys herding-type activities, loves to run, and frequently plays with the dogs in his foster home. Outdoors, he no longer chases the horses and respects their space. He does fairly well on walks and tends to circle his person, keeping close. While he hasn’t been off-leash, he has a solid recall and doesn’t try to run off when outside. JB is housebroken, kennel trained, and goes into both his indoor and outdoor kennels easily. He knows a few basic commands like “come,” “sit,” and “kennel.” A patient training approach—or even a class—could help him build confidence, but he will need a trainer familiar with fearful dogs. JB’s ideal home is quiet, structured, and led by a patient woman who understands nervous, shut-down, or fearful dogs. A fenced yard, another friendly dog, and a calm environment would help him continue to progress. Inside the home he tends to pace, but once things are still, he settles. Sudden movements send him retreating to his kennel, though he returns once the environment is calm again. JB is a project dog—but a rewarding one for the right person. With time, consistency, and compassion, he will continue to blossom at his own pace. He’s looking for someone who sees beyond his fears and is ready to offer him the gentle, steady love he’s learning to trust. Story

Phantom is a sweet lovable dog but very high energy! He got along very well with my other male and got attached to him. Unfortunately, we just don’t have the time to keep him busy like we’d like too as we both work very long hours. He is very treat motivated and learned the commands sit, lay down, and paw fairly quick. He is catching on to learning stay. We also have 2 cats in our house and at first he wasn’t sure about them but after some correction he gets along very well with my cats and tends to leave them alone. He loves going to daycare to let off steam and going to dog parks to run his laps. He is honestly very sweet and wants to please so he’d be perfect for someone willing to take the time to train him.

Hi friends! My name is Willy. I'm a border collie mix of sorts and quite handsome if I do say so myself. I'm a bit of a special dog, a real shy guy, but if someone would just give me a chance I will make a great companion. I love other dogs, as long as they're friendly, and I absolutely must go to a home with another friendly dog or two to show me I'm in a safe place. We all need some reassurance sometimes, right? I also need a fenced yard. Whoever my new owner is will need to be able to give me lots of time and space to feel comfortable with them. Oliver, our guest in board and train here at the Sanctuary, arrived just a few days ago. He's an adorable boy, and we're taking a few days to get to know him. Sadly, Oliver has gone through some traumatic events recently. His owner died suddenly and unexpectedly at a park with Oliver by his side; Oliver was left there and had to be retrieved later. Oliver was his owner’s whole world, and the family is now working with the Manhattan shelter to help find him an appropriate placement and new home. He is now with The Pet Connection, so he can decompress and get consistent handling. We know that Oliver is a sweet, gentle boy who loves his people. He enjoys taking walks and is reportedly good on leash. He would do best in a calm, adult home with no cats and no puppies. We also know that Oliver is part gazelle and can jump a short fence, so if your fence is only 4' tall, you'll need to walk him on leash for sure. Meet Pebbles, our sweet red border collie looking for her forever home! Pebbles came to us as a scared girl who wanted to do nothing but hide, having faced unimaginable challenges in her early life. Though she may initially seem reserved, she is slowly blossoming into a loving companion. With gentle encouragement and patience, Pebbles is starting to show her playful side, enjoying quiet walks and the warmth of human affection. She weighs in at 45 pounds and is a little over a year and a half old. Pebbles is fully potty trained and does great on a leash. She loves being around the other dogs and tries to make friends. Each day is a step towards building her confidence, and her journey of transformation is just beginning. She deserves a patient and understanding family who can help her continue on this journey of confidence and love. History | Pebbles comes from a border collie hoarding situation in Colorado. National Mill Dog Rescue (NMDR) was contacted by a family member because they had “some” dogs that needed rescued. When NMDR arrived they found 92 border collies all under the age of three. They were fed-ish by one person, mostly left to survive on their own, and had been doing so for years. They developed a pack mentality which, unfortunately, led to arguments ending in a loss of life for at least one dog. They would kill any and all small animals within the area. NMDR was able to safely evacuate 40 with hopes of going back to get the rest. All dogs were shut down and scared, but have begun to show friendliness after decompressing and time to learn to trust humans. Pebbles had one 4-week old puppy when NMDR showed up to the scene. This puppy was on the brink of death being eaten alive by fleas and ticks. NMDR was able to grab the puppy before the pack got to it. The puppy is now healthy and has been adopted by a member of NMDR. Check out her bio on our website with the link below!
