Story
🐾 Meet Jack 🐾 Jack is a handsome 15-month-old Border Collie mix weighing just under 60 pounds, and if you're looking for a dog who will become your loyal shadow, biggest cuddle bug, and adventure partner, this sweet boy is ready to steal your heart. Jack came to Melissa's Second Chances after being rescued from a heartbreaking hoarding situation in Oklahoma. Despite everything he's been through, he has never stopped loving people. In fact, one of Jack's favorite things in the world is wrapping his front paws around someone for one of his famous hugs. Once you earn his trust, he'll happily lean into you for comfort, affection, and reassurance. Jack is wonderfully social with other dogs and absolutely loves having canine friends to wrestle and play with. His foster home includes a German Shepherd mix and a Cattle Dog mix, and they have become his biggest confidence boosters. He would thrive in a home with another friendly, well-adjusted dog who can continue showing him that the world isn't such a scary place. While Jack has made incredible progress, he's still learning that unexpected noises and unfamiliar situations don't have to be frightening. Construction sounds, sudden loud noises, or surprising encounters on walks can make him nervous. When that happens, he looks to his person for reassurance and guidance. The good news? Jack learns remarkably fast. With calm leadership, positive reinforcement, and consistency, his confidence continues to grow every single day. He's already developing wonderful manners. Jack walks nicely on a leash, settles beautifully in his crate at bedtime, rides quietly in the car, and lets you know when he needs to go outside. He's eager to please, responds well to gentle corrections, and loves learning alongside the people he trusts. One of Jack's most endearing quirks is mealtime. Because of his past, eating can sometimes make him feel vulnerable. He often prefers having his favorite person nearby while he eats, almost as if he's asking someone to watch his back. It's just another reminder that beneath his big, athletic frame is an incredibly gentle soul who's learning what it means to feel safe. Jack would do best with a family that understands confidence-building isn't a weekend project—it's a journey. He'll flourish with patient adopters who enjoy training, celebrate small victories, and understand that trust grows through kindness and consistency. A fenced yard, another playful dog, and an active household where he can enjoy walks, car rides, swimming, hiking, or simply spending time with his people would be ideal. Every week Jack becomes a little braver, a little more confident, and a little more convinced that life is full of good things. His forever family won't just be adopting a wonderful dog—they'll have the privilege of watching him continue to blossom into the confident companion he's always had the potential to become. And once you've experienced one of Jack's signature hugs, you'll understand why everyone who meets him falls in love. ❤️🐾 ----------------------------------------- If you’re interested in adopting, please apply online at mscrescue.org/adopt. Story
Hi friends! My name is Willy. I'm a border collie mix of sorts and quite handsome if I do say so myself. I'm a bit of a special dog, a real shy guy, but if someone would just give me a chance I will make a great companion. I love other dogs, as long as they're friendly, and I absolutely must go to a home with another friendly dog or two to show me I'm in a safe place. We all need some reassurance sometimes, right? I also need a fenced yard. Whoever my new owner is will need to be able to give me lots of time and space to feel comfortable with them. I'm a really good boy, I'm crate trained and house broken, but until I get used to you I'm gonna need you to keep your paws to yourself. I promise it's not personal, and you'll see I'm worth the wait! Willy is neutered, up to date on shots and microchipped. He's located at The Pet Connection Sanctuary in Beloit, KS, but transportation to the right home may be available. To learn more about Willy please contact The Pet Connection by call or text- 913-671-PETS (7387).

Story
Meet Blitz, our friend with City of Raytown Animal Services! She's a fun-loving border collie mix, around a year old. She is super smart, loves other dogs and kids, and is looking for a home with people who are familiar with or willing to learn about herding breed dogs. Blitz loves going on adventures and is a very good girl in the car! When her friend took her on a day out of the shelter, including to pick out a toy, Blitz had soooo much fun! Call or text The Pet Connection at 913-671-7387 for more information. She's in the Kansas City metro, but transport might be available.

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. If interested in adopting, read about our Adoption Process and complete an Adoption Application on the Mo-Kan website.  A Mo-Kan application must be filled out to begin the process.(Sending an "Inquiry" via Petfinder does not constitute an application.)   **Updated Bio**If you have ever wanted a Border Collie with all of the smarts and energy that comes with them, meet Bunny (no jokes about my name please.  Have you seen my ears?).  Bunny is a 35 lb., 13- month-old border collie with all of the characteristics you would expect in a true border collie.  She has a very high energy level and is quite intelligent. Bunny would probably make a great sport dog.  She is extremely fast and has legs that let her leap high into the air.  She has recently discovered frisbee play and is learning all the ins and outs of keeping up with the flying disc.  Bunny loves to explore the world and go on long sniffer walks.  These long, unstructured walks allow her lots of mental stimulation, a must if you want to have a calm home.  Bunny enjoys playing ball for a few minutes, but would rather race around the yard as the other dogs fetch the ball.  Fast would be an understatement for this girl.  She is up for trick training, but finds that difficult to focus in her foster home with four other dogs.  There is always something more exciting than silly tricks. Water is a favorite with this pup, especially after exercise.  Bunny loves exploring the lake, running through the water and the mud, flopping down in the wading pool, or chasing the hose. She is quite loving and will happily sit on a lap or on the floor for affection, once her energy and mental needs have been met.  Bunny has a nice off switch, settling in with a favorite chew toy or napping.   As she approaches bedtime, it is necessary for her to race around the backyard a couple of times to get out the last minute bugs. It takes Bunny a few minutes to warm up to new people and new things in her environment.  Once she is comfortable with someone, they will be her friends for life.  She is very enthusiastic when greeting people, so would be best for older children.  She is being fostered with a mini Aussie, so sometimes doesn’t understand that she is bigger, stronger, and more exuberant than her foster sister. While Bunny is great with other dogs and definitely needs a companion dog.  She is not good with cats, finding them to be very rewarding to chase.  She is not good with chickens or other small animals, like moles in the garden.  Bunny is spayed and up to date on all vaccinations.  She is house trained, crate trained, leash trained, and has excellent recall. Bunny is being fostered in the Holden, MO area.Click here to watch a video of Bunny.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.September 14, 2026, 4:36 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Courtesy Post Courtesy Post - see contact info at the bottom of the bio!!  Dorito is a one year-old, 34 pound male neutered Border Collie, who is currently in a Kansas City area shelter. He was initially a stray in Oklahoma and was transferred to the Kansas City shelter. Dorito loves his people, is a very active and driven boy, and would likely make a great sport prospect.  He shows great focus, toy drive and a fantastic tug.  While he doesn't always return with the disc, it's simply a matter of teaching him the rules of the game. Dorito enjoys interacting with the other dogs in large playgroups with dogs big and small.  It's unknown how he is with cats, however. Dorito is highly alert on walks and if walking too close to a roadway, may lunge after cars, but is easily redirected. He also can be a leash biter but stops when told. Though he’s good with other dogs in playgroups, he will bark and pull, sometimes lunge towards other dogs when out on a walk. The shelter staff describes him as being very treat and toy motivated, Affectionate, Driven, Friendly, Happy Go Lucky, Hyper. He does still jump on people and can be mouthy, especially when trying to get you to play with him. He has shown no aggression. He is neutered, heartworm negative, up-to-date on vaccinations, and on monthly preventatives. Finn is a striking black-and-white Border Collie, around 1–2 years old and 50 lbs, who came into rescue as a stray. When he arrived, he was dealing with a significant skin infection and patchy hair loss, but with treatment and care, his coat is growing back beautifully and now shines with a healthy, glossy finish. Finn is a medium-high energy guy who's looking for an adopter with Border Collie (or similar herding breed) experience. He has learned “sit, down, wait, look, touch, take it, leave it, drop, and comes when called. He is house trained and crate trained. Finn has 2 older BC foster sisters he is respectful of them and takes correction well. He  loves running and playing chase, with them, shares toys and bones. Finn hasn't been tested with cats, but he is VERY interested in squirrels--so a home without small critters is likely best Finn loves every human, big and small, and prefers being with his humans and family. He has been to a dog park, and was great with other dogs, and people. He really enjoyed exploring, and spending time with foster mom. He prefers a good walk, run or a hike. His leash skills are improving with a harness. Finn has learned to play ball, his favorite game! He will bring the ball back for you to throw until your arm is tired! This boy is not a couch potato! Despite his playful energy, Finn does have an off switch. He's happy to settle down, snuggle up on the floor, and shower you with hugs and kisses during movie time. (He's still practicing keeping those four paws on the floor, so no furniture privileges just yet!) He also enjoys chewing on bones and playing with tough squeaky toys. Finn would thrive with an active family who will include him in adventures like hiking, running, camping, and long walks. He is up for any activity with his people. He will need continued positive reinforcement training to keep building his confidence and channel his intelligence in the right direction. Daily physical and mental exercise will be key to keep this fun, bright boy happy. Finn is up to date on vaccines, on preventatives, and neutered.  Does Finn sound like the perfect fit for your family? Apply to adopt him at MoKanbcrescue.org and come meet your new best friend! Story
🐾 Meet Lucy If your idea of a great dog is one who wants to be your sidekick for whatever the day brings, Lucy may be ready to volunteer for the job. ❤️ Lucy is a beautiful young Australian Shepherd who is sweet, affectionate, playful, and packed with that wonderful young-dog enthusiasm for life. Her previous owner describes her as “super sweet,” energetic, and clingy—and in Lucy's case, clingy means she'd really like to be part of whatever her people are doing. She's also got an impressive compatibility report card: Lucy is reported to be great with dogs, cats, and kids. She has lived as an indoor dog and is both house trained and crate trained. At just a year and a half old, Lucy has plenty of energy and will do best with people who actually want an active companion. Walks, adventures, playtime, training games, enrichment, and opportunities to use that busy brain should all be part of her life. Give Lucy appropriate outlets for her energy and you'll get to enjoy the affectionate girl underneath who loves being close to her people. Lucy can be energetic and pace when she's left alone, so she'll benefit from a family willing to help her develop a comfortable routine and continue building her ability to settle independently. She is crate trained, which gives her new family a helpful foundation to work from. Australian Shepherds are bright dogs who thrive when their bodies and brains both have something to do, and Lucy sounds ready for exactly that kind of partnership. She's not looking for a life where nothing ever happens—she wants to participate! Lucy is losing her home simply because her owner no longer has the time or ability to provide the care she needs. At only 1½, she has virtually her entire adult life ahead of her and is ready to spend it with people who have the time, energy, and love to make her a real member of the family. If you're looking for a smart, affectionate, energetic companion who would be delighted to join the adventure—and then stick close to her favorite humans—come meet Lucy. 🐾💕 ----------------------------------------- If you’re interested in adopting, please apply online at mscrescue.org/adopt. Story
Meet Paige 💗 Paige is a 2-year-old, medium-sized sweetheart who is finally getting the chance to find the kind of home she’s always deserved. Paige’s story started when she was just a young dog, dumped in a ditch in rural Missouri. She was taken in by a family who tried to help her, but could no longer offer her the care she deserved. When Paige ended up getting pregnant, her puppies needed help, some wonderful local rescuers reached out to Melissa’s Second Chances. Of course, we couldn’t leave mama behind. ❤️ Now her puppies are safe, and it’s Paige’s turn to be someone’s baby. Paige is an incredibly sweet girl who loves people. Her previous owners says she is good with dogs and kids, and she’s already proven herself to be a great leash walker! Having spent most of her life in the country, Paige can be nervous around lots of cars, noise, and hustle and bustle. She may be happiest in a quieter home where she can settle in at her own pace and discover just how good life can be. 🐾 Paige at a Glance * 2 years old * Approximately 30 lbs * Medium-sized * 🐶 Reportedly dog friendly * 👧 Reportedly kid friendly * 🦮 Great leash walker * 💗 Sweet and people-loving * 🌾 More comfortable with a quieter lifestyle (nervous with loud noises, busy traffic, and city hustle and bustle) Paige has spent enough of her young life simply making do with what she was given. Now that she’s finished raising her babies, we’d love to see her find a family who chooses her, too. 🏡💕 ----------------------------------------- If you’re interested in adopting, please apply online at mscrescue.org/adopt. Story
Meet Cooper 🐾 Cooper is a 3-year-old Heeler mix with a playful personality, plenty of energy, and a gentle heart. This handsome guy loves to play and would make a great companion for someone looking for an active dog to join them on adventures. Despite his energetic side, Cooper knows how to be gentle — especially with kids. He has lived with three children who love petting and playing with him, and he does wonderfully with them. Cooper also does well with other dogs. He can be a little reserved when meeting a new canine friend, but it doesn’t take him long to warm up and start playing. Cooper is crate trained and has spent his life living both indoors and outdoors. Because of that, he may need a little patience and consistency as he adjusts to living fully indoors and learns the routines of his new home. He generally behaves well when left alone, although his curiosity can occasionally get the best of him when no one is watching. Cooper has never lived with cats, so we don’t know how he would do with feline friends. If you’re looking for a fun, playful dog who can keep up with an active family but still has a sweet and gentle side, Cooper might be your guy! 💙 ----------------------------------------- If you’re interested in adopting, please apply online at mscrescue.org/adopt.
