Story
A dog by any other name, just wouldn’t be the same! Fantastic Mr. Fox, referred to as FMF or Fox, is a 6 year old (almost 7) Chihuahua mix. He came to MHCR as a transfer from a local CO shelter in February of 2025. He spent the next 10 months completely kicking our a$$e$ with his allergies and trying to get them under control. AND WE HAVE SUCCEEDED. This guy is, you guessed it, fantastic. He’s been totally worth the effort and we couldn’t be more thrilled to finally list him for his true forever home. He’s on a strict diet and requires daily meds to maintain this luxurious coat and to keep his skin fully intact. Fox is around 12-13 lbs. He loves wearing clothes and fully expects a nice wardrobe from his forever humans. He is great with dogs and cats of all sizes and has proven himself to be house trained. Are you in school? Perfect! He wants to eat your homework. If you aren’t into that you can simply crate him, but be warned, he will protest that a bit in the beginning. Fox likes car rides. He enjoys walks and stroller rides. He’s never met a stranger and is quick to warm up to new peeps he meets. He has bursts of play, but LOVES snuggle time under ALLLLLL the blankets as any good chi should. We have worked closely with Mr. Fox’s regular veterinarians as well as a dermatology specialist at CSU (🙏🏻) to come up with the right blend of meds and food to keep this boy comfy and healthy. He takes Atopica, prednisone, eats a strict prescription diet, and has an even stricter list of treats – with this kind of treatment you’d be surprised he isn’t royalty. We are happy to report, we’ve spent months monitoring his bloodwork and his body has finally taken kindly to the program. Mr. Fox, unfortunately has had a handful of seizures while in our care over the preceding 12 months. At this stage he does not require medications however it is something he may need additional support with in the future. We aren’t looking for just any home. We are looking for the right home. While there are many shapes and sizes, one thing is for sure, FMF’s forever peeps shouldn’t be opposed to a dog will have some medical needs. He promises to pay them back 10 fold, though. Fantastic Mr. Fox is in foster in Black Hawk, Colorado. *We require all adopters to come to Colorado to adopt. *We do not transport dogs. * You can view this wonderful dog at https://www.milehighcanine.org/post/dogs/fantastic-mr-fox You can apply for our wonderful dogs at https://www.milehighcanine.org/adopt/adoption-application/.

Story
"Meet Annie 💕 Annie is a 6-year-old, 9.5 lb Chihuahua with a tender heart and a big personality tucked inside her tiny frame. She’s a shy, sensitive girl who takes her time getting to know new people, and when she’s unsure, she can be a little snappy at first. But give her patience, understanding, and a calm environment, and you’ll see her true self blossom. Once Annie feels safe, she absolutely loves to snuggle. She bonds closely with her person and is happiest curled up beside you, soaking in the love. And don’t let her serious first impression fool you — when she’s comfortable, she can get downright frisky and playful! Annie would do best in an adult-only home with a securely fenced yard where she can feel safe and decompress. She prefers calm, submissive dog friends and would thrive with a chill canine companion (or as your one-and-only). Annie isn’t the right fit for everyone — but for someone patient, experienced, and kind, she’ll be an incredibly loyal and loving little companion. 💗" Annie is being fostered in Castle Rock, Colorado. *We require all adopters to come to Colorado to adopt. *We do not transport dogs.* You can view this wonderful dog at https://www.milehighcanine.org/post/dogs/annie/. Story
"Meet Tim, a big personality crammed into a teeny tiny 6–7 lb body. At 5 (almost 6), this little Chihuahua is sensitive, cautious, and learning to trust at his own very slow, very Tim-approved pace. He is adorable, expressive, and fully committed to doing things his way. Tim is a fearful little guy and will need a patient, adult-only home that understands this is a long-term trust-building situation. He does not like being picked up, will not allow a leash to be put on him (unless you can distract him with treats), and it will take a good amount of time before he is comfortable with petting. Even once he warms up, affection happens strictly on his terms. But when he chooses you, it feels like winning the lottery. Now for the fun part. Once Tim truly trusts someone, he becomes super snuggly and transforms into a tiny, affectionate shadow who just wants to be near you, still on his terms, of course. Those rare, hard-earned cuddle moments are pure magic and absolutely worth the wait. He is silly, playful, and loves his toys. He is also free-roam trustworthy, and gets along well with other dogs. Tim is looking for someone who loves an underdog story and understands that progress comes in baby steps. He needs patience, consistency, and someone who celebrates the small wins like “he sat closer today” or “he didn’t run away this time.” In return, you get the honor of being Tim’s safe place and watching him slowly blossom into the sweet boy we know he can be. If you’re ready for a tiny dog with big feelings and even bigger charm, Tim is ready to meet you." Tim is being fostered in Longmont, Colorado. *We require all adopters to come to Colorado to adopt. *We do not transport dogs.* You can view this wonderful dog at https://www.milehighcanine.org/post/dogs/tim/. Story
"Tonto is a slow-burn kind of guy, but once he warms up he is so worth the wait. This funny little dude is affectionate, cuddly, and full of quiet charm 🥰 He’s the type who will make you laugh with his awkward zoomies and then curl up for a long, peaceful nap right after. Why we love Tonto: Crate trained and a dream about it – not a peep overnight or during the day Very quiet overall (we honestly haven’t heard him bark yet!) Low energy with adorable bursts of zoomies on his long, stilt-like legs Content to chill, lounge, and nap most of the day Low-shed coat Doing great with house training when taken out regularly Not a marker 👍🏼 Things to know before adopting: Tonto is a dog who values his personal space. He doesn’t like feeling cornered and prefers not to be picked up when he’s cozy on the couch or resting in his crate. Respecting his boundaries helps him feel safe and confident. He’s kid-friendly with dog-savvy kids — he does well with older children (11+) who are gentle and understand when to give him space. He would not be a good fit for homes with young kids who want to pick him up or interact on their own terms. With other dogs, “dog tolerant” is a better description than dog social butterfly. He can coexist with other dogs, but he has shown some resource guarding with bones, comfy couch spots, and human laps (as most small dogs do). The perfect home for Tonto: A calm, understanding home that appreciates a quieter dog, respects boundaries, and enjoys a sweet companion who blossoms with trust. If you’re looking for a low-key, affectionate buddy who just wants to feel safe and loved, Tonto might be your guy 💙. He is 4 years old and 12.8 lbs." Story
Lolli 🍭is a 3-year-old Poodle/Chihuahua mix. If there are hands available, Lolli would like to be under them. If there are no hands available… she’ll still find a way. This tiny girl lives for human attention and would happily crawl directly into your skin if that were an option. Velcro dog doesn’t even begin to cover it. Lolli is spunky, affectionate, and absolutely devoted to her people. She loves any drop of attention you’re willing to give and will soak it up like sunshine. She’s house trained and enjoys her crate — especially when she knows you’re nearby. She’s still working on feeling confident when her humans leave, as she can have some separation-anxiety barking, so a home without shared walls would be ideal. She’s great with other dogs and does just fine having canine friends around. Cats? She’s… okay-ish. Sometimes she chases, but honestly, she seems to think they’re just oddly shaped dogs. With proper introductions and management, she may coexist just fine. Don’t let her cuddle-bug status fool you — Lolli loves to play! Fetch and toys are some of her favorite things, and she’ll happily bounce around before returning to her favorite hobby: being glued to you. If you’re looking for a loyal little shadow who wants to be involved in absolutely everything you do, Lolli is your girl. 💕 Lolli is in foster in Mead, Colorado. *We require all adopters to come to Colorado to adopt. *We do not transport dogs. * You can view this wonderful dog at https://www.milehighcanine.org/post/dogs/lolli You can apply for our wonderful dogs at https://www.milehighcanine.org/adopt/adoption-application/.

Story
Meet Buster! Buster is a 4 (almost 5) year old, 15 lbs, Chihuahua mix. This sweet, gentle boy is a total cuddlebug once he feels safe with you. He’s fully crate trained, potty trained, and walks well on a leash. Buster is smart, but also very shy—he can be skeptical of new people and needs someone who will go slow, respect his space, and let him build trust at his own pace. Once he warms up, his personality shines. With continued socialization and positive exposure to new people and experiences, he’ll continue to grow in confidence. He’s very chill, loves hanging out at home, and will happily entertain himself watching (or chasing!) squirrels in the yard. He’s great in the car, has no separation anxiety, and prefers quiet environments over big groups. If you’re looking for a calm, loving companion who will be your loyal shadow once he feels comfortable, Buster could be your perfect match. Buster seems to enjoy the company of similarly sized dogs, but he doesn’t require the company of one in his forever home.
