Story
Lumi is a 4lb, 6 month old Chihuahua/Maltese mix who is small enough to fit in one hand, but she has a big loving personality. She was found as a stray in Texas, covered in ticks and severely matted, before coming to Colorado to find her forever home. Despite her rough start, she is an incredibly sweet, affectionate little puppy who loves people and other dogs.
Lumi is happiest being close to her people. She loves to be held and cuddled, leans her head into you when she’s in your arms, and gives plenty of kisses. She is also wonderfully independent for a puppy. When her foster family is working from home, she is content to sleep in a dog bed nearby, play with her toys, or ask to be held. She loves collecting her small toys from around the house and bringing them back to her bed.
She gets along well with the 15lb and 60lb resident male dogs in her foster home. She seems interested in playing and cuddling with other dogs, although because she may only reach 5–6 pounds fully grown, she would be safest around calm, gentle smaller dogs who can’t accidentally injure her.
Lumi can be a little nervous in new environments and may shake for a few minutes at first, but once she settles in, she does very well and usually finds a comfortable spot to sleep. She is happy being carried in a bag and has allowed unfamiliar adults and children in public to pet her without issue.
She does have some separation anxiety, so her ideal adopter would be home much of the day—such as someone who works from home, is retired, or can bring her to work. She is making good progress with her crate and now sleeps through the night.
Like any puppy, Lumi is still learning. She is making progress with potty training but still has occasional accidents and will need someone willing to continue working with her. As she has become more comfortable in her foster home, she has also started showing more typical puppy behavior, including chewing on clothing, yard debris, and other things she shouldn’t. She’ll need appropriate puppy-proofing and supervision.
Lumi does well in the car and is learning to ride safely in a dog car seat. She hasn’t had much leash experience yet, but should be able to learn with practice. She would love to have a fenced yard to explore.
Lumi is currently healthy with no major medical issues. Her veterinarian has noted some early tartar buildup, so like all small breeds she will need regular dental care professional dental cleanings as an adult.
Lumi’s ideal home is one where someone is around much of the day, she can be the only dog or live with calm small dogs, and her adopter is prepared for the normal challenges of a young puppy—including potty training, chewing, and continued socialization. In return, Lumi is an exceptionally affectionate, playful, easygoing little companion who mostly wants to be near her person and feel safe and loved.
