Story
Meet Walt! This 3-year-old, 20-pound chihuahua is a gentle and thoughtful boy looking for a calm, patient home where he can truly blossom! Walt is currently enjoying some much-needed time in a fabulous foster home with an awesome trainer! His foster dad is helping him to become the confident, capable boy we all know he can be! Walt may be a little shy when you first meet him, but don’t let that fool you — once he feels safe, he is incredibly sweet, loyal, and deeply capable of forming strong bonds with “his” people. Walt is currently enjoying daily structured walks, which he absolutely loves. These walks have helped him build confidence, learn that “leash = follow,” and strengthen his trust in his handler. He walks nicely, stays engaged, and is clearly gaining comfort in the world one step at a time. In the home, Walt is both house-trained and crate-trained! He does wonderfully with other dogs and is respectful of cats. He tends to be more curious about other animals than people at first, and having a calm, balanced dog in his future home would likely help him continue to gain confidence (though it is not required). Walt prefers to observe, think, and approach at his own pace. He sleeps quietly through the night. Walt is still learning that human hands, leashes, and food bowls are safe, so he appreciates slow movements, calm energy, and gentle guidance. With consistency and patience, he is making beautiful progress. When given space and time, Walt will approach for affection and is clearly beginning to enjoy gentle love and connection. Ideal Home for Walt: ● A patient, calm adopter who values structure and routine ● A quieter household (ages 16+) ● Daily walks and predictable boundaries ● Someone willing to let Walt warm up on his own terms ● Optional: another calm, well-balanced dog Walt is searching for the right person who understands him. In return, he will offer quiet companionship, loyalty, and a truly special bond. If you’re looking for a sensitive, thoughtful, and deeply rewarding dog, Walt might just be your perfect match. Walt's amazing foster dad/trainer has put together some helpful training suggestions along with a guide on how to help him acclimate to his new home. If you'd like to be the one to show him just how good life can be, head to greatlakesdogrescue.com and submit your application for our wonderful Walt!

Good With Kids: No young kids Good With Other Dogs: Yes Good With Cats: Unknown Housetrained: Workin’ on it Crate Trained: Yes Walks Nicely On A Leash: Yes Knows Basic Commands: Workin’ on it Energy Level (Couch Potato, Moderate or High): Moderate Special Needs: Physical Fence: Preferred Favorite Toy / Activity: Playing outdoors with dog pals. ARRIVAL STORY: Was relinquished by owner due to too many dogs in home. AGE / WEIGHT: 1.5 Yrs Old and 9lbs. PERSONALITY: Jake may be just 9 pounds, but inside that tiny frame is a heart waiting to blossom in the right hands. At about 1.5 years old, this sweet, soulful boy has already been through more than most pups ever should. Jake spent his early life in a home with too many dogs and not enough human love to go around. Despite that rough start, he’s learning every day what it feels like to be cherished — and he's ready to keep learning with you. In foster care, Jake has discovered the pure joy of playing tug with his dog pal Remi and the hilarious thrill of burying his favorite treasures in the yard. While he’s still working on a few basics like housetraining and commands, he’s already showing us his gentle, quiet spirit. You may never hear his unusual bark, but you’ll see his personality shine in the small moments: a tail wag in the yard, a happy trot beside his dog buddy, or a shy glance that slowly turns into trust. He’s a handsome mix of Chihuahua, Yorkie, Mini Schnauzer, Pomeranian, Toy Poodle, and a sprinkle of a few other breeds — a true one-of-a-kind companion! New Home: Jake is looking for a calm, patient home — ideally with a woman and another confident dog who can show him the ropes. He can be a little fearful, especially around men (he never really got to know them before), but he’s never shown any aggression. With time, understanding, and lots of love, Jake will reward you in ways only a dog who has truly learned to trust can. If you have experience with shy or unsocialized dogs, and your heart is open to watching a once-nervous little boy learn to feel safe, Jake will be your greatest joy. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Mwanna is a very sweet, 8 year old chihuahua.  She is blind but gets around fairly well once she learns the lay out. She is friendly and loves to be around people. She is happy to snuggle on the couch. She is very calm and rarely barks unless she is locked up away from people.  She can’t see so even if you are nearby, she can’t tell, so she calls out for you. She is working on housebreaking.  She goes potty outside if taken out on a regular basis and does use piddle pads.  She is very fond of her daughter, Delilah.  It would be nice if they could stay together. With love and attention, Mwanna would make a perfect pet. No history with cats, older children and physical fence required.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.  ********************************************************************************** We show some of our adoptable dogs at PetSmart, Utica, each Saturday between the hours of 11:00am and 3:00pm.  Cats typically don't do well at events, so they only attend with a pre-approved meet and greet appointment. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Winston is a very sweet boy, who loves to play with toys and enjoys the company of other dogs. Winston came from a hoarding case, so he does need someone with patience. He is afraid of outdoors, but he is very good about using his potty pads in the house. He is also afraid of human touch until he knows he can trust you. Then he allows you to pet him, but still fears being picked up. He loves to sleep in bed with his human.  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.  ********************************************************************************** We show some of our adoptable dogs at PetSmart, Utica, each Saturday between the hours of 11:00am and 3:00pm.  Cats typically don't do well at events, so they only attend with a pre-approved meet and greet appointment.
