Story
We all know how we get that awww feeling when we see a sweet young dog that needs our help. Berry was one of these dogs that was in dire need due to lack of space in a high-kill shelter and therefore facing the possibility of euthanasia.
Just look at those EYES! Berry is a 4 year old, 23 pound little mystery mix with the most gorgeous, bright blue eyes you’ve ever seen. We and the Texas vets believe she may be a Dachshund / Australian Cattle Dog / Chihuahua mix, although we do not DNA test our rescue dogs, so her breed is simply a best guess based on her appearance.
Whatever she is, we know one thing for sure: Berry is absolutely adorable! She has the beautiful look of an Australian Cattle Dog, but she is tiny at only 23 pounds, with shorter legs and an adorably long body that makes us think there is definitely some Dachshund in there somewhere. She is basically a miniature, long-bodied, blue-eyed Cattle Dog, and we are completely obsessed with her.
Berry's story is one of those that makes absolutely no sense. She was picked up as a stray in Houston and ended up in a very crowded, high-kill shelter. She was such a sweet and friendly girl that she actually made it out of the shelter's general population and into their adoption section, which gave her a chance to find a home.
Unfortunately, adoptions are incredibly difficult at this particular shelter, and after a week without finding an adopter, Berry was placed on the euthanasia list. She had done absolutely nothing wrong. She was simply running out of time because no one had chosen her.
Thankfully, we learned about Berry and rescued her with literally two hours to spare. We still cannot believe this wonderful little dog came so close to losing her life when she is exactly the kind of dog who should have been scooped up by a family and loved immediately.
Berry is sweet, friendly, affectionate, and just an all-around wonderful dog. She has the kind of happy, lovable personality that makes it especially heartbreaking to think about what almost happened to her. Now that she is safe, she gets to leave her shelter days behind and start looking for the family she should have had all along.
Berry does have some areas of hair loss along her body. This is unfortunately something we see very frequently in dogs rescued from the Houston area. Dogs who have spent time as strays in the extreme Texas heat, without consistent nutrition, veterinary care, flea prevention, or protection from the elements, can develop dry, irritated skin and poor coat condition. The stress of being a stray and living in a crowded shelter can also take a toll on their skin and coat.
The good news is that Berry's skin scrape was negative, meaning there was no evidence of mange or mites. She has also been fully vetted, and is totally healthy. With some time, good nutrition, regular care, and a little TLC, we expect her coat to continue improving and growing back beautifully. A quality diet and something like salmon oil added to her food may also help support healthy skin and coat as she settles into her new life.
Farfel's would like to see Berry in a home that includes her in family time and fun activities (and some lap or couch-time with belly rubs would be absolutely perfect!) as well as taking that extra step to participate in positive reinforcement / force free virtual or in-person obedience classes. These classes successfully teach a smart and cooperative dog like Berry the skills to accompany her family out into the world with excellent behavior. Berry has been fully vetted and is up to date on her vaccinations. This support Farfel's commitment to adopting out only healthy dogs. She has also been spayed to reinforce our commitment to a euthanasia-free future in the canine population.
