Story
Sheldon is a handsome 3-1/2 year old male Chocolate Labrador Retriever/Pit Bull Terrier mix who was brought to the HSOV on November 22, 2022 by the Washington County Ohio Dog Warden who picked him up on State Route 555 in the Cutler Ohio area. Sheldon was wearing an orange/silver reflective collar but there was neither an id tag nor a dog tag on his collar .. And he was not microchipped. Sheldon has a chocolate brown short smooth coat with a white bib on his neck/chest, a long tail, and an adorable face with expressive brown eyes, a milk chocolate nose, and short floppy ears . Sheldon has a friendly, easygoing personality and enjoyed his 15-minutes of fame when HSOV Humane Officer Fredley Tynan spent time with him for his outdoor photo session. There was an after-hours dog walk in progress, and Sheldon was very curious about other dogs that he saw being walked in the distant and seemed to want to make their acquaintance. He also 'perked up' when he saw cars being driven into the parking lot as though he expected his owner to coming to look for him. Sheldon appears to be housetrained. Sheldon weighs 59.4 lbs and walks fairly well on a leash. He has a slim trim physique and could easily carry a few more pounds. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Sheldon was held for three days so that his family would have an opportunity to reclaim him with proof of ownership. Since Sheldon was not reclaimed, he was neutered on January 11, 2023 and was also given rabies vaccine. Sheldon was adopted on March 25, 2023 but was returned a week or so later because he was nervous around babies (and perhaps with toddlers/small children) and shows his fear by growling, so we recommend that Sheldon be placed in a home with adults or older children. He is truly a fantastic lovable dog who will be a terrific companion with his new family. We've also learned that Sheldon does NOT do well with cats, so he should not be placed in a home where he would have contact with them. Sheldon appears to do ok with most other dogs.

Story
Harlem is a beautiful 10-month old female Terrier mix who was surrendered by her owner on May 24, 2023 because she was no longer in a position to take care of Harlem. Harlem has a black short smooth coat with subtle gray shading, a large white bib on her chest, white paws, a long tail, and an adorable face with dark brown eyes, a black/charcoal gray nose, and short floppy ears. When her owner surrendered Harlem, we were advised that Harlem would prefer to be an 'only child' since didn't do well with children, cats, and other dogs. (Note: After being in our shelter for many months, Harlem has been actually been doing ok with other dogs.) Harlem has been kept indoors and is housebroken. This young lady was naturally very scared/nervous when she entered our shelter in May 2023 and found herself in an unfamiliar place with people that she did not know. Our kind kennel techs have made sure that Harlem realized that she was in a safe place and that they would give her unconditional love while she waits her new home. Harlem weighs 54.6 lbs. She doesn't appear to have been accustomed to walking on a leash, so our HSOV kennel techs began working with her on leash training while these photos were taken later in the afternoon on May 24, 2023. Harlem was spayed on June 13, 2023 and was also given rabies vaccine. Since her owner later changed her mind about surrendering Harlem, she was held as 'safe-keeping' in hopes that Harlem could return home. Update 8/6/2024: Harlem is now available for adoption and is looking for a loving home. HSOV kennel techs and volunteers have provided some of their experiences with Harlem that we will share in order to help her find the perfect home: April 2024: Harlem's "play style" is varied (rough & rowdy; push & pull; gentle & dainty). She is a "mirror dog" (tends to mimic what other dogs around her are doing), and she is a good "helper dog". August 2024: Harlem has attended off-site walks. She rides well in a car and is friendly with other dogs on the walk. She is a little unsure of strangers who approach her on the walking trail but is easily redirected. Harlem is very loving and comfortable with her handler. She loves the 'water stream/creek' and jumps right in to walk in the water. Harlem would love to be back in a home of her very own with a special someone who would have the patience to adjust on her own schedule and to reach her full potential.

Story
Oakley is a magnificent 2-1/2 year old male Great Dane mix who was surrendered by his family on August 10, 2023. This handsome guy has a black-and-white short smooth coat, long legs, a long tail, and an adorable face with Great Dane features. Oakley has expressive brown eyes, a large muzzle, a black button nose, and short floppy ears. His family told us that Oakley is great with children of all ages. He is 'kinda' good with other dogs but may tend to be selective depending on the temperament of the other dogs. Oakley is very playful (like a big overgrown puppy), and he knows basic commands. Oakley has been kept indoors and is house-trained. He is sensitive/reactive if anyone grabs him by his collar or pulls him by his collar. Oakley adored HSOV Lead Canine Kennel Tech Jared Nash who accompanied him for outdoor photos on August 11, 2023. Oakley took cues from Jared and posed like a 'Best Of Show' Westminster contestant. Oakley weighs approximately 80 lbs and is strong on the other end of a leash. Oakley was neutered on August 16, 2021.

Story
Betty is a beautiful 3-1/2 year old female American Pit Bull Terrier mix who was brought to the HSOV on August 2, 2023 by a Good Samaritan who found her on Brandy Drive in Marietta Ohio. Betty was accompanied by her best friend Veronica who is most likely her sister. Neither Betty nor Veronica were wearing a collar, and they were not microchipped. Betty has a black short smooth coat with an over-sized white bib on her chest, a long tail, and a pretty face with a narrow white stripe on her forehead, a chubby muzzle, and short floppy ears. Betty was 'in a family way' when she entered our shelter and is very pregnant. We anticipate that she will be giving birth to several babies in the near future. Her bestie/sister Veronica is the self-appointed mid-wife since she is always as close to Betty as possible. Betty weighs 75 lbs. Thanks to HSOV Volunteer Tracy Moore for taking Betty & Veronica outdoors (together of course) so that they could have updated glamour photos taken on August 11th. We had taken preliminary photos in their kennel a few days after they arrived, and they were snuggled up close to each other on their large blanket-covered kuranda bed. We had late-breaking news soon after we posted Betty's Petfinder 'baby bump' photos on the evening of August 13, 2023 and will include a birth announcement: Betty gave birth to six healthy puppies. All of the babies and momma Betty are doing well ... And "Aunt Veronica" is also doing well. UPDATE: Four of Betty's babies survived but, sadly, two of the puppies passed away during the month of September 2023. Her four remaining puppies (Curie, Einstein, Franklin, and Newton) have thrived and are happy, playful youngsters who will soon be leaving for their new homes. Betty has been separated from her puppies, and she is ready to begin the next chapter of her life. She will be spayed in the near future and will soon be looking for a fabulous home of her very own. Betty was spayed on September 9, 2024 and was also given rabies vaccine.

Veronica is the self-appointed mid-wife since she is always as close to Betty as possible. Veronica weighs 50 lbs. She doesn't appear to have been accustomed to walking on a leash but made a noble effort with her best friend Betty by her side. Veronica has a gentle, rather shy, personality.
