Story

Shadow (aka Cerberus) is a cute 11-month old male Terrier mix puppy who was surrendered by his owner on August 12th 2026 because he was playing too rough with young children. Shadow has a sleek black short smooth coat with mahogany highlights, a teeny tiny patch of white on his chest, a long tail, and an adorable face with expressive brown eyes, a square muzzle, and large semi-erect ears. This young man is merely an overgrown puppy and is full of playful energy. Shadow has a Type 'A' outgoing personality and seems never to have met a stranger. Shadow was neutered on June 29, 2026 and was also given rabies vaccine. This handsome youngster may look familiar to some of our HSOV volunteers and Facebook followers since he was surrendered by his original owner on April 18th 2026 because he was no longer in a position to take care of Shadow. These photos were taken on the afternoon of April 24, 2026 when HSOV Volunteer Jennie Sherrard accompanied Shadow for his outdoor photo session. Shadow gave Jennie nice hugs while he begged for attention (and naturally Jennie obeyed his every wish .. who could say 'no' to Shadow's hopeful eyes and facial expressions?) Shadow weighs approximately 40 lbs and is still a growing boy. He is pretty active and energetic on a leash. Shadow went home with a foster family on May 12, 2026 who officially adopted him on June 29th 2026. His adoptive family loved Shadow (aka Cerberus) very much, but he was just too active and playing too rough with small children in their home. So another lucky family will have an opportunity to adopt this sweet boy Shadow aka Cerberus.

Story

Tiger Lily is a beautiful 4-year old female Pit Bull Terrier mix who was brought to the HSOV on March 4, 2026 by the Washington County Ohio Dog Warden. She was being kept on Safe-Keeping status at that time since it was likely that her owner would reclaim her at a later date. Tiger Lily has a brown short-haired cat with a small patch of white on her chest, a long tail, and a pretty face with cute wrinkles on her forehead, golden brown eyes, a slender muzzle, a liver-colored nose, and semi-erect ears. Tiger Lily's coat has a subtle 'tiger-striped' pattern which is absolutely stunning. This little beauty weighs approximately 50 lbs. Unfortunately, Tiger Lily was not reclaimed by her original owner so her status was changed to adoptable on June 7th 2026. Tiger Lilly has become a favorite of some of our HSOV volunteers who love to walk her for out-of-cage exercise and to stretch her legs. Like many shelter dogs, Tiger Lily is very excited and energetic on a leash when she experiences her 'get out of jail free' card but she settles down to a more reasonable pace after the 'burst of energy' (smile). Tiger Lily loves her people friends but she is selective of the dogs which she chooses to be friends with .. And she does NOT include cats in her circle of friends. These updated photos of Tiger Lily were taken on the afternoon of August 6th 2026 when HSOV Volunteer Miley Kiggans spent time with her on a sunny afternoon. Tiger Lily made the most of her 15-minutes of fame (and freedom from her floor crate) and thoroughly enjoyed being with Miley. Tiger Lily will be spayed before she is officially adopted. She would love to find a forever home (or a temporary foster home) so that she could enjoy the comfort of a real home environment.

Story

Jake is a sweet one-year old male (possible) Hound/Blue Heeler mix who was brought to the HSOV on October 14, 2024 by a Washington County Ohio Deputy Sheriff. Jake was found near the Dollar General Store in Belpre Ohio earlier that day and was taken into custody by the Belpre City Police in hopes that his owner could be located. Unfortunately Jake's family/owner was not found, This handsome boy was not wearing a collar, and he was not microchipped. Jake has a shiny black-and-tan coat with a beautiful patch of blue ticking on his chest, a long tail, and a cute face with dark brown eyes, a dusting of blue/white on his muzzle and a thin stripe on his forehead, and large floppy ears which frame his face. These photos were taken shortly after Jake made his debut at HSOV late in the afternoon on October 14th. Jake spent a little time relaxing in the lobby with HSOV Manager Tracy Lynn and soaked up some loving attention while he waited patiently for several 'wild and crazy' kittens to finish their photo sessions. Jake weighs 42 lbs and has a super sweet personality. Since he was not reclaimed, Jake was neutered on January 13, 2025 and was also given rabies vaccine. Jake enjoyed an extended out-of-shelter 'vacation' at Boxers Bed & Biscuits from mid-March 2025 to mid-June 2025 thanks to the generosity of a group of dedicated HSOV volunteers/supporters. Jake returned to HSOV on June 20, 2025 and has enjoyed his own private “bachelor’s pad/man cave” in a spacious room adjacent to the shelter lobby. If you have been in our shelter, you have most likely heard Jake making his own excitement by pushing his stainless steel bowl around like an imaginary ice hockey puck. .. And we must say that he is quite an accomplished player. Jake is good with his adult people friends, but he is not good with cats or young children. Jake is dog selective and picks/chooses which dogs he gets along with. We are including several of Jake’s favorite toys/activities in his description (thanks to HSOV Volunteers Miley Kiggans and Levi Emil de Leeuw who are the co-Presidents of Jake’s Fan Club). Jake is a 'smaller little firecracker' (we LOVED Levi's cute description of Jake!!) with lots of love to give to his people friends. Jake is full of playful energy and is surprising good on a leash when he is outside the shelter. Jake loves water puddles/ponds as witnessed by Miley Kiggans when she accompanied him on an off-site walk during a rainy afternoon. Jake also loves peanut butter, pig ears, rope toys and stuffed toys (not necessarily in that order). We all agree that Jake is a totally different dog when you are with him outside the shelter .. Like many dogs, Jake's shelter presence does not represent his true character. Jake's 'ice hockey playtime with his stainless-steel bowl does not define his personality/behavior out of his 'bachelor's pad/man cave' residence. Jake has a sweet personality He isn’t a very big dog when you see him in person (less than 50 lbs). Jake is currently about 2-1/2 years old and has now spent the majority of his life with us. Jake would love to find a home with his special person/soulmate who would give him the love, playtime, and companionship which he is longing for.

Tabatha is a beautiful 4-year old female Pit Bull Terrier/Labrador Retriever mix who was brought to the HSOV on July 23, 2024 by the Washington County Ohio Dog Warden along with Tabatha's male companion (Kenny) who is most likely her brother. Tabatha has a white short smooth coat with large black patch on her left side and at the base of her long tail. Tabatha has the most adorable face and the nicest 'smile'. She appears to have borrowed an eyebrow pencil to enhance her black eyebrows but didn't have access to a mirror when she applied her makeup (smile). Tabatha has a slender muzzle and short black semi-erect ears. This little lovebug was a pleasure to photograph when HSOV Kennel Tech Cadince Bibbee accompanied her for outdoor glamour pictures on July 26, 2024. Tabatha displayed a sweet, cheerful personality and adored attention from Cadince. Tabatha wags her tail the moment you make eye contact with her (and looks up at you with hopeful eyes and her cute smile). Tabatha weighs 58 lbs and walked fairly well on a leash for Cadince. Tabatha and Kenny had an unfortunate incident which placed them on a 10-day bite quarantine when they were brought to our shelter. They have 'done their time' and have been great 'guests' in our shelter. Their owner decided to surrender them to our shelter, so they are now looking for a new home. Tabatha will be spayed before being adopted by her new family (a requirement for HSOV adoptions to be finalized). Tabatha was spayed on December 3, 2024 and was also given rabies vaccine. She is ready to find her dream home with someone as special as she truly is. Tabatha and Kenny are being listed as a bonded pair since we feel that it is in their best interest to be adopted together. Update: Tabatha and Kenny are not good with cats .. And they are dog selective and pick/choose which dogs they will get along with.

Story

Loki (fka Idaho) is a handsome 2-1/2 year old male Pit Bull Terrier mix who originally was in our shelter as a tiny newborn puppy when his mother (Layla) was brought to HSOV on December 17, 2021 along with her four newborn babies (Idaho, Russet, Yam and Yukon). Layla was a good mother to her puppies and she eventually went back home with her family. Her puppies all found homes during the new year (2022). Loki came back to our shelter in the Fall of 2023 and has been readjusting to shelter life for the past several months while enjoying a large 'bachelor apartment' in our Safe Haven facility. He has recently made a move from Safe Haven to a smaller apartment adjacent to the lobby of our shelter .. Loki is usually seen looking through the window when visitors come to our shelter in hopes that special someone will offer him the home that he has been dreaming of for the past six months+ Loki is ready to move on with his life and find an appropriate home of his very own. This magnificent boy has a black-and-white coat, huge paws, a long tail, and an adorable face with blue eyes, a black button nose on his chubby muzzle, and short floppy ears. Loki's left ear is white and his right ear is black. Loki is looking for a home where he could be an 'only child' since he is not good with other dogs or cats. He would most likely be ok with older children who would be strong enough to withstand his 'hugs' and robust playtime. Loki is big boy who currently weighs 105 lbs and is very strong on a leash (especially when he jumps). He would probably do best with an experienced handler who could give him the attention and exercise that he loves. Loki is merely an overgrown puppy in a very large body. He is full of playful energy and doesn't know his own strength. This collage of photos were taken on July 2nd 2024 when HSOV Lead Canine Kennel Tech Jared Nash accompanied Loki for outdoor Fourth of July pictures in his festive red/white/blue bandana when Loki was chosen to announce our HSOV Wednesday Wish List for July 3rd. Loki has already been neutered, so he could leave our shelter immediately with an approved HSOV adoption application. And as an added bonus, we can offer BABY PHOTOS of Loki (whose baby name was Idaho since he was such a cute little pudgy potato) UPDATE: Loki went home with a foster family on October 4, 2024 so that he can enjoy a real home environment while he waits for someone to adopt him and give him a forever home. Loki has been slowly introduced to the other dogs in his foster home, and they are getting along well. Loki went home with foster family on October 13, 2024 who plans to adopt him if all goes well. Loki was returned to HSOV on December 7, 2024 by his heartbroken foster family. They truly loved Loki but could no longer keep him since he did not get along with one of their resident dogs and had caused bodily injury to her.
