Story

Jake is a sweet one-year old male (possible) Hound/Blue Heeler mix who was brought to the HSOV on October 14, 2024 by a Washington County Ohio Deputy Sheriff. Jake was found near the Dollar General Store in Belpre Ohio earlier that day and was taken into custody by the Belpre City Police in hopes that his owner could be located. Unfortunately Jake's family/owner was not found, This handsome boy was not wearing a collar, and he was not microchipped. Jake has a shiny black-and-tan coat with a beautiful patch of blue ticking on his chest, a long tail, and a cute face with dark brown eyes, a dusting of blue/white on his muzzle and a thin stripe on his forehead, and large floppy ears which frame his face. These photos were taken shortly after Jake made his debut at HSOV late in the afternoon on October 14th. Jake spent a little time relaxing in the lobby with HSOV Manager Tracy Lynn and soaked up some loving attention while he waited patiently for several 'wild and crazy' kittens to finish their photo sessions. Jake weighs 42 lbs and has a super sweet personality. Since he was not reclaimed, Jake was neutered on January 13, 2025 and was also given rabies vaccine. Jake enjoyed an extended out-of-shelter 'vacation' at Boxers Bed & Biscuits from mid-March 2025 to mid-June 2025 thanks to the generosity of a group of dedicated HSOV volunteers/supporters. Jake returned to HSOV on June 20, 2025 and has enjoyed his own private “bachelor’s pad/man cave” in a spacious room adjacent to the shelter lobby. If you have been in our shelter, you have most likely heard Jake making his own excitement by pushing his stainless steel bowl around like an imaginary ice hockey puck. .. And we must say that he is quite an accomplished player. Jake is good with his adult people friends, but he is not good with cats or young children. Jake is dog selective and picks/chooses which dogs he gets along with. We are including several of Jake’s favorite toys/activities in his description (thanks to HSOV Volunteers Miley Kiggans and Levi Emil de Leeuw who are the co-Presidents of Jake’s Fan Club). Jake is a 'smaller little firecracker' (we LOVED Levi's cute description of Jake!!) with lots of love to give to his people friends. Jake is full of playful energy and is surprising good on a leash when he is outside the shelter. Jake loves water puddles/ponds as witnessed by Miley Kiggans when she accompanied him on an off-site walk during a rainy afternoon. Jake also loves peanut butter, pig ears, rope toys and stuffed toys (not necessarily in that order). We all agree that Jake is a totally different dog when you are with him outside the shelter .. Like many dogs, Jake's shelter presence does not represent his true character. Jake's 'ice hockey playtime with his stainless-steel bowl does not define his personality/behavior out of his 'bachelor's pad/man cave' residence. Jake has a sweet personality He isn’t a very big dog when you see him in person (less than 50 lbs). Jake is currently about 2-1/2 years old and has now spent the majority of his life with us. Jake would love to find a home with his special person/soulmate who would give him the love, playtime, and companionship which he is longing for.

Story

Tabatha is a beautiful 4-year old female Pit Bull Terrier/Labrador Retriever mix who was brought to the HSOV on July 23, 2024 by the Washington County Ohio Dog Warden along with Tabatha's male companion (Kenny) who is most likely her brother. Tabatha has a white short smooth coat with large black patch on her left side and at the base of her long tail. Tabatha has the most adorable face and the nicest 'smile'. She appears to have borrowed an eyebrow pencil to enhance her black eyebrows but didn't have access to a mirror when she applied her makeup (smile). Tabatha has a slender muzzle and short black semi-erect ears. This little lovebug was a pleasure to photograph when HSOV Kennel Tech Cadince Bibbee accompanied her for outdoor glamour pictures on July 26, 2024. Tabatha displayed a sweet, cheerful personality and adored attention from Cadince. Tabatha wags her tail the moment you make eye contact with her (and looks up at you with hopeful eyes and her cute smile). Tabatha weighs 58 lbs and walked fairly well on a leash for Cadince. Tabatha and Kenny had an unfortunate incident which placed them on a 10-day bite quarantine when they were brought to our shelter. They have 'done their time' and have been great 'guests' in our shelter. Their owner decided to surrender them to our shelter, so they are now looking for a new home. Tabatha will be spayed before being adopted by her new family (a requirement for HSOV adoptions to be finalized). Tabatha was spayed on December 3, 2024 and was also given rabies vaccine. She is ready to find her dream home with someone as special as she truly is. Tabatha and Kenny are being listed as a bonded pair since we feel that it is in their best interest to be adopted together. Update: Tabatha and Kenny are not good with cats .. And they are dog selective and pick/choose which dogs they will get along with.

Story

Nova Ann is a beautiful 3-year old female Terrier mix who was surrendered by her owner on August 7th 2026 after the family moved recently. This little beauty has a charcoal gray/chocolate shorthaired coat with a large white bib on her chest, white socks on her paws, a long tail, and an adorable face with dark brown eyes, a charcoal/milk chocolate nose, a slender muzzle, and short semi-erect ears. These photos of Nova Ann were taken on the afternoon of August 8th 2026 when HSOV Kennel Tech Emily Beaver accompanied her for outdoor glamour pictures for her Petfinder/Facebook debuts. Nova Ann was a bit apprehensive since this seemed to be a new experience for her, but she did herself proud with a little encouragement and moral support from Emily. Nova Ann hadn't stepped on the scales yet, but she is estimated to weigh 50 lbs or so. Her family told us that Nova Ann did not do well with young (2- and 3-year old) children or their mother in the home and had shown irritability toward them. Nova had never bitten anyone, but shouldn't be in a home with small/young children .. And would benefit from an experienced adopter. Nova Ann has already been spayed.

ZuZu (Spayed)

Story

ZuZu is a lovely 2-1/2 year old female (possible) Boxer/American Pit Bull Terrier mix who was brought to the HSOV on April 19, 2026 by a Good Samaritan who found her on State Route 555 in the Little Hocking Ohio area. ZuZu was wearing a collar but, unfortunately, there was neither an id tag nor a dog tag on her collar .. And she was not microchipped. ZuZu has a white short smooth coat, a long tail, and a beautiful face with hopeful innocent eyes, a black button nose, a square muzzle, and short floppy ears which are sprinkled with black spotting. This sweet girl has a friendly outgoing personality and loves attention. She appears to have had litters of puppies in her lifetime. ZuZu weighed 36 lbs when she entered our shelter and could easily gain several pounds to fill out her slim trim figure. ZuZu is fairly strong on a leash in spite of her size. These photos of ZuZu were taken on the afternoon of April 24th when HSOV Volunteer Jennie Sherrard accompanied her for outdoor glamour pictures. ZuZu was such a 'good girl' and looked so cute in her heart-covered pink bandana. She thoroughly enjoyed being the center of attention. ZuZu appears to be housetrained, so someone has surely loved ZuZu and cared about her. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, ZuZu was held for the mandatory three-day stray hold so that her family would have an opportunity to reclaim her with proof of ownership. Since nobody called or came looking for her, ZuZu can be fostered or fostered-to-adopt with an approved HSOV foster/adoption application. Since she was not reclaimed, ZuZu went home with a foster family on May 12, 2026 who offered her a fabulous temporary home so that she could enjoy the comfort of a nice home environment instead of being in a shelter kennel/floor crate. Her foster family reports that ZuZu is good with children and other dogs (and our HSOV staff/kennel techs feel that ZuZu is also good with cats). ZuZu is still available for adoption. Please complete/submit an HSOV foster/adoption application if you would like to meet ZuZu so that we may arrange a meet-and-greet with ZuZu and her foster family. Note: ZuZu was returned to HSOV by her foster family on May 30, 2026 for a happy reason (to meet a potential adopter). The meet-and-greet went extremely well, and ZuZu went home with another foster family on May 30th 2026 who planned to adopt her after she was spayed. Unfortunately, ZuZu was returned to HSOV by her foster-to-adopt family on June 26th 2026 because she and the resident dog in the home were not compatible with each other .. So her original foster mother took ZuZu back to her home where she is available for foster/adoption with an approved HSOV foster/adoption application. Update: ZuZu was spayed on July 20, 2026 and was also given rabies vaccine.

Story

Ares is a cute 2-year old male mixed breed/Terrier who was brought the HSOV on April 15, 2026 after he was found on Vickers Road/Barth Road in the Marietta Ohio. Ares was not wearing a collar, and he was not microchipped. This good-looking boy has a black shorthaired coat, a long tail, and an adorable face with dark brown eyes, large erect ears, and the nicest 'smile'. The individual who found this cute boy reported that Ares did not like being put in a kennel and was not a fan of women .. We've confirmed that Ares really is very hesitant about being put into a kennel, but he has actually done ok with our female staff/kennel techs. Ares has a stocky build but he hasn't yet stepped on our scales for an official weigh-in. These photos of Ares were taken on April 24th when HSOV Lead Canine Kennel Tech Emily Beaver accompanied him for outdoor pictures. Ares agreed to wear a bright orange bandana which was a nice contrast to his sleek black coat. Ares was in seventh heaven when Emily gave him the opportunity enjoy the 'great outdoors' and out-of-kennel time. Ares is still adjusting to being in a shelter and Emily has gained his trust. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Ares was held for the mandatory three-day stray hold so that his family would have an opportunity to reclaim him with proof of ownership. Sadly, nobody called or came looking for Ares. Since he was not reclaimed, we will have Ares neutered and find him a loving home.
