She was sadly dumped at a shelter in Alabama alongside her brother, Clark. Despite this unfair start, Lois clearly shows signs of having once known a loving home and hasn’t let her past dim her wonderful spirit. Lois is incredibly friendly and affectionate with people and absolutely adores the company of other dogs. She’s social, gentle, and eager to connect, making her a joy to be around. At her young age, she’s in her prime for training and socialization and will thrive with a family ready to help her continue learning and growing. While Lois is currently heartworm positive, the good news is that K-9 Lifesavers is covering her treatment, and with a little rest, TLC, and patience, she’ll be feeling like her best self in no time. Lois will make an excellent addition to a loving home — and with a personality like hers, she won’t be available for long. Introducing Snowflake! Snowflake is a 2-year-old Labradoodle with the softest, fluffiest curls and the sweetest little teddy-bear face you’ve ever seen. His bouncy curls, soulful eyes, and permanently happy expression make him impossible to ignore—and even harder not to fall in love with. Snowflake has that fun, joyful personality that keeps you smiling without being overwhelming. He’s friendly with everyone—great with kids, cats, and other dogs—and he’s doing wonderfully with house training. Story
Meet Nilo! This beautiful boy has the ultimate puppy dog eyes and one very important (self-assigned) job in his foster home: official greeter and toy presentation specialist. Every time you walk through the door - whoever you are - there he is, tail wagging, proudly showing off whichever stuffie he has chosen for the occasion. It’s his love language, and who doesn’t love a formal greeting with a gift? We found this sweet, gentle soul in the shelter looking utterly defeated, like the light had gone out of him. Shelter staff said Nilo barely moved. He just…existed. Waiting for someone to notice, waiting for someone to care. We did - and now Nilo is thriving as a Miri's boy. He settled into his foster home beautifully and immediately made it immediately clear that he only needs two things from life: his human and his stuffed octopus. Nilo is utterly devoted to his foster mom and wants to be near her all the time, lounging in the yard, on the deck, on the couch - anywhere will do as long as she's nearby. And after his human, his second greatest love is his stuffed octopus. He carries it around everywhere and especially loves showing it off to visitors at the front door. He even clutches it while he's sleeping - and yes, it really is as adorable as it sounds! He’s getting so good at “sit,” and he’s now working on “wait” with the motivational support of senior salmon jerky treats. Every day he grows a little braver ~ wandering the yard longer, exploring on his own, finding his rhythm. Nilo lights up when his harness comes out, ready for a walk anytime. He’s already down 11 lbs and can comfortably walk a mile now… though he prefers to take approximately 400 sniff breaks to fully evaluate the neighborhood. Nilo is housetrained, leashtrained, a superb car passenger, and great with kids and other dogs. But some things are still hard. A neighbor occasionally practices shooting, and those loud noises terrify him so much that he tried to squish all 80 lbs of himself into a corner. Big sounds and big crowds aren’t for him. Nilo is a gentle soul who thrives in calm, quiet spaces and loves nothing more than squishing into the couch with his foster mom. He and his octopus are hoping to find a forever home that is generally calm and quiet with a predictable routine. Nilo would be happiest in a family where someone is home with him most of the day. While he doesn't love being left alone at first, he's fine once he learns the routine and can trust that his person is coming back. Nilo came to us very overweight, so he's on a strict diet. It's working - he's lost more than 10 lbs so far! His forever family needs to be dedicated to helping him stick to his diet and exercise routine so he can reach and maintain a healthy weight. This beautfiul boy has so much love to give and is so deserving of receiving it return. Could you be the person he's been waiting his whole life for? Nilo is approximately 88 lbs and 9 years old. Story
Meet Dexter! Dexter is an absolute doll and a fluffy ball of love and affection. This precious gentleman has spent his entire life being passed around like an old sweater: worn out, tossed aside, rehomed again and again whenever he became “inconvenient.” His most recent stop was only a few short months, through no fault of his own. When Dexter arrived at Miri’s Haven, he was clutching the few squirrel toys he was dropped off with like a child holds a blanket. He was confused, shut down, and painfully thin. Yet when he saw the resident pups, his tail twitched…the smallest spark of “maybe this time will be different.” And it has been. Dexter is thriving in his foster home where he is finally being showered with the love he's deserved along. His personality is shining through: he’s a connoisseur of comfort ~ he loves all the beds and needs approximately seventeen blankets to rearrange until he achieves the perfect snuggle architecture. He gets along beautifully with foster mom’s two cats, loves sniffing all the smells on walks, and has even started to show off his playful side! His favorite toys are the small soft ones that are easy for him to hold in his mouth. After a lifetime of being ignored and neglected, Dexter loves being with his person. He's a top tier snuggler and will happily follow his foster mom from room to room like a tiny loving shadow. He loves being petted, scratches his back by wriggling on the carpet, and bringing his face close to yours while wagging his tail to tell you just how much he loves you. If you have to step out, he'll stay home by himself - but will bring one or two of your shoes to his bed to snuggle with instead. He's not chewing the shoes - he just wants to feel like you're nearby and it's as precious as it sounds. He also has the funniest and most adorable little barks and growls. Dexter would love a home with humans who are home most of the time, love to snuggle with him, and can provide structure and routine. He walks well on the leash but would love a fenced-in yard to explore. He would also love to join a home with at least one other dog to pal around with. He's good in the car, so feel free to take him with you when you go out on adventures. Dexter is housetrained but may need a little time to get used to the potty routine and schedule in his forever home. He will benefit from pee pads and/or belly bands in the interim. Dexter does best with a predictable routine and regular opportunities to go outside. He has some trouble hearing, so cuddling and soft treats will help supplement verbal praise when helping him adjust. He sleeps through the night like a champ with the cutest, softest little snores you've ever heard. Right now, Dexter is on a special diet to help him gain weight and soothe his stomach. His forever family will need to be dedicated to helping him finish filling out to a healthy weight - as well as giving him the love, attention, and affection he's missed out on his whole life! He's got a little bit of arthritis and some itchy skin, but he's on meds to help him control these issues. Dexter is a well-mannered, affectionate senior with plenty of personality and playfulness. He acts younger than his age and enjoys walks, playtime, sniffing outside, warm clothes for cold days outside, mealtime, and cozy time with his people. Friendly, gentle, and polite, he would make a wonderful companion for someone seeking a loving, low-drama dog with a big heart. He thrives with a consistent routine and does best in a home where extended periods away are limited or thoughtfully planned. Dexter is counting down the days until his forever family finds him, and we can't wait to see who's lucky enough to adopt this sweet soul. Could it be you? Dexter is approximately 13 years old and 15 lbs. Fostered in Germantown, MD Please apply at MirisHaven.org
