BEFORE PAWS NE:Fergie was born into “The Fairview litter” of puppies that were picked up by a good Samaritan in Texas after being dumped in the country. She spent her first year of life in Texas before arriving in New England at the end of July 2023.SINCE COMING TO NEW ENGLAND:After traveling from Texas, Fergie took her time to find her comfort level and to come out of her shell. After a few weeks, with the help of the foster’s family dog, she quickly learned how to climb stairs (she hadn’t known them in Texas), swim, and how to do well off-leash, while hiking in the wooded areas of New England. She has gained confidence in herself from the companionship of another dog, so we feel she would continue to grow and thrive in a home that has another dog for her to spend time with.Fergie looks forward to taking daily walks, loves hiking and swimming. She is happy to join her foster mom and brother on car rides and is content either laying down or by feeling the wind on her face out the back window (see picture ☺). Although still a puppy at a little over a year old, she is even-keeled and is happy to just hang on the floor with a toy or a bone to occupy her time. She is a snuggle bug on the couch at the end of the day.WHAT SHE KNOWS: Fergie is house-trained and does well in a crate, but can also do well unattended as long as valuable items aren’t within her reach. She currently has her own room at night, where she alternates sleeping on the couch or floor. She is a dream on a leash and is working on her recall/off-leash abilities. She knows the commands ‘sit’ and ‘come’. She has never shown any resource guarding or issues with being fed or given treats near her foster brother. WHAT SHE’S WORKING ON:Fergie never experienced stairs in her original foster home in Texas. While in New England, she has conquered shorter flights of stairs and is learning how to conquer longer sets when the situations arise. She also currently has access to a fenced in yard, so her time on a lead or line has been limited. She is practicing using one but should be supervised and not left alone until she has grown more comfortable with this concept.Fergie is also learning how to be social with new people. She can be shy and takes a little longer than others to go up to new people. Slow introductions are more productive for her and she is improving with every outing she goes on. Having her foster brother has helped her gain confidence in this area and she is learning that people are good (and sometimes have treats!)DOGS: Great! Fergie previously attended doggie daycare in Texas and loved it. She has met several new dogs while in New England and has gotten along with all of them automatically.RABBITS: There are an abundance of rabbits (wild, outside) on the current foster’s property and she will chase them and go searching for them. She is learning to focus her attention elsewhere but is still very intrigued by these wild creatures.CATS: We are not sure about cats at this moment but would want to test them inside so see if there is improvement from her outside experience with rabbits (see above)THE BEST FIT FOR FERGIE:Fergie would continue to thrive and be happiest in a home that has another dog. An active couple or family that provides her with daily walks or outside time would be in her best interest. New owners should be understanding about allowing her some time to decompress in her new home and once she finds her comfort zone, they will discover a beautiful, ‘happy to be here’ dog that will give you her love and gratitude for giving her a welcoming home to grow in.
