Story
Meet Charlie! This gorgeous boy with the striking marbled coat came from a breeder in a small town outside Charlotte, NC. Charlie is a double merle, which happens when two merle-patterned dogs are bred together and can result in vision loss. Because of his limited sight, the breeder couldn’t sell him and listed him on a Facebook rehoming page. Thankfully, our volunteer Dina saw the post and stepped in to get Charlie safely into rescue. He was fostered in North Carolina with five other small dogs before coming north. He’s now living in Reston with an active family that includes three kids (7, 9, and 12) and a playful Labradoodle named Nola. Charlie and Nola became instant best friends, even though she’s more than twice his size. They love to wrestle, play tug, and run around together, with Charlie following Nola’s lead. Charlie would do best with a playful, confident dog his size or larger to be his buddy and role model. While he is technically blind, he may see some shapes and shadows, and it certainly doesn’t slow him down. It’s the only life he’s ever known, and he navigates the world confidently using his amazing sense of smell and hearing. His foster mom, Katie, has been amazed at how quickly he adapted to her home and neighborhood walks. Within days, he learned the layout of the house and how to climb the stairs (she usually carries him down for safety). At first, a baby gate kept him in the main living area and blocked the stairs while he got comfortable with the space. After a week, he started barking whenever someone approached the gate. Now, he knows where the stairs are and either steers clear or navigates them confidently on his own. Charlie is crate-trained and doing well with potty training, though he benefits from regular breaks about every three hours. He doesn’t have accidents in his crate, which his foster family uses when they’re away for longer periods. A home with a flexible schedule is the best fit for him. He enjoys leash walks and exploring the neighborhood with Nola and does best on a short leash for guidance and safety. Overall, he’s a happy, confident little dog who loves to play, explore, and be part of a loving family. Katie shared this update: “Charlie has been absolutely wonderful. He’s great with my kids - sweet, gentle, and never nippy. He’s young, bubbly, curious, and also very food motivated. He’s fearless and confident, doesn’t let his limited vision hold him back, and definitely doesn’t realize his size compared to larger dogs. He’s a rough-and-tumble player who loves romping around with Nola. They even play tug with the same toy, which is just too cute to watch! I love it. Charlie is a very snuggly dog. He loves to bury his nose near your cheek and sleeps well through the night, cuddling in bed with my kids. He has jumped off beds a couple of times as he’s learning to navigate our home, and it’s been so cool to watch. He’s playful but not overly energetic and loves all kinds of toys, especially ones that make noise when they hit the floor, squeaks, rattles, or crunchy plastic bottle sounds, which helps him find them quickly. He is so easy to please with treats. I’ve put all kinds of toppers on his food: diced apple, steamed lentils, carrot shreds, blueberries, diced broccoli stems…he loves them all. I think he really needs a doggy buddy in his new home. He follows Nola and uses her as a guide on walks. not the whole walk, as he definitely wants to do his own thing sometimes. but for segments of the walk.” Charlie’s ideal home would include another playful canine companion; larger dogs are fine. Like any dog, he’ll need a gradual introduction to a new home, and with his limited vision, taking things a bit slower is important. Starting with one safe room and gradually expanding his access helps him learn his surroundings. When introducing other pets, moving slowly and using jingling tags can help Charlie hear them approaching and feel more comfortable initiating interactions. He’s also best walked on a short leash for added guidance and security. Charlie is joyful, fearless, and ready for a home that will give him the love, engagement, and structure he needs to be his best self. Apply today! Bert: 3 years old 14lbs Shihtzu Beige with black Betty: 4 years old 9lbs Shihitzu Beige with black Meet Bert & Betty: These two were found as strays, having clearly endured some tough conditions. Despite their rough start, Bert and Betty are full of love, resilience, and personality. They are a bonded pair and must be adopted together; their connection is something truly special. You’ll often catch them grooming each other at the end of the day, with Bert sweetly cleaning Betty’s face before she returns the favor. While they get along with other dogs, Bert and Betty would likely thrive best as the only pups in the home. They can sometimes “team up” and try to outmatch other dogs, especially smaller or more timid ones. That said, they coexist well with calm, confident dogs who don’t engage. Their personalities couldn’t be more different: Bert is your classic lovebug. He wants to greet every person and pup on walks and quickly becomes everyone’s best friend. He’s happiest curled up on your lap, soaking up affection. He truly just wants to be loved and be your loyal companion. Betty is a bit more independent but just as endearing. During the day, she enjoys relaxing in a cozy spot, but in the early mornings and evenings, she turns into a snuggly sweetheart. Don’t let her size fool you; she’s got impressive stamina and could happily walk for miles on a nice day. They both love toys, enjoy playtime, and have wonderful temperaments with people of all ages. Bert and Betty are doing well with structure and routine. They are housebroken and making great progress with crate training. Continued positive reinforcement will help them keep building confidence when left in their crates. They are still working on leash skills, especially Betty, who can get a bit adventurous, so they’ll benefit from continued guidance and consistency. If you’re looking for a pair that will make you laugh, keep you company, and fill your home with joy, Bert and Betty are it. They’ve already brought so many smiles into their foster home, and they’re ready to do the same for yours. Please Note: **No children under 10!** If you are interested in adopting BERT & BETTY, please visit our website at www.somersetcottagepoodlerescue.org to learn about our adoption process and download the adoption application. BERT & BETTY's adoption donation is $1300

Story
The perfect little companion for someone who wants a loyal shadow by their side. Willie is an 8-year-old, 7.8-lb Shih Tzu with a calm, loving personality and wonderful manners. He’s easy on a leash, great in the car, and perfect in public. Whether it’s errands, a pup cup run, or quietly visiting friends, Willie is happiest simply being near his person. He was found alongside two other little dogs on the side of the road by a man on a motorcycle. They had clearly been surviving outside for quite some time — covered in fleas and buried beneath painfully matted coats. Despite all of that, Willie remains incredibly sweet and trusting. He ignores other dogs and prefers focusing on his humans. Willie is truly the definition of a perfect little old soul dog — calm, affectionate, portable, and ready to spend the rest of his life being loved. If you’re looking for a tiny companion who will happily follow you anywhere, Willie is waiting. Willie is neutered and up-to-date on vaccines. The adoption fee for this dog is $250 which includes routine vetting and spay/neuter. PetConnect Rescue cannot guarantee the exact breed of any animal in our care. The breed listed is based on any background we may have been provided, and the general appearance of the animal at the time they enter our system. Story
Meet Yoshi, a Bichon–Shi Tzu mix, who is a loving and playful boy who is sure to bring a smile to your face and warmth to your heart. Yoshi is 2.5 years old and is a big, solid boy, weighing around 15 pounds. With his affectionate nature and playful spirit, Yoshi is always up for a good time. He is an athletic dog who enjoys staying active and would be the perfect companion for all your adventures. Whether it's a game of fetch or a walk in the park, Yoshi is ready to join in on the fun! He is a funny boy who will keep you entertained with his silly antics and playful personality. He frequently has exuberant “zoomies” and loves to race around the yard (see video). Yoshi is housetrained. He is super playful with other dogs, so keep this in mind if you have other dogs at home who may get irritated by an overly playful young pup. Because of his extra–playful nature, we think he would do best as an only dog. Yoshi is a true companion, never leaving your side. Yoshi is neutered, UTD on vaccines, and has had fecal and heartworm tests. Yoshi is eager to find his forever family and share his love and joy with those around him. Could you be the one to give Yoshi the loving home he deserves? Apply at https://fs8.formsite.com/Caringhearts/form1/index

Story
Meet Beau, a little bundle of fur with a big personality! This adorable 9-lb Shih Tzu has had a rough start in life, but that hasn't dampened his spirits. Beau is a tough cookie on the outside but a total lovebug on the inside. He just needs a little time to warm up and show his true colors. In his foster home, Beau has shown his foster mom just how loving he can be. He enjoys following her around, snuggling up close, and giving kisses. Beau is a curious boy who loves to watch the world go by from the comfort of a windowsill. He's also a pro at napping and can imitate a buzz saw with his snoring! Beau is a well-mannered boy who walks nicely on a leash and enjoys car rides. He seems to get along with other dogs, but he would prefer a quiet home with experienced dog owners who can give him the time and patience he needs to settle in and feel safe. If you're looking for a loyal companion to shower with love and cuddles, Beau could be the perfect match for you. He's a little charmer with a big heart, and he's just waiting for his forever family to find him. Could you be the one to give Beau the happy ending he deserves?
