Story
Huey is a budding senior Shi Tzu mix who came to the rescue after one of our veterinary partners contacted us for help. Huey’s owners had asked them to euthanize him, and they felt it was an extreme measure. We believe Huey was mistreated in his former life and had some behavioral/trust issues and an ongoing ear infection that needed to be addressed. We felt he deserved a chance to rehabilitate and live his golden years in a loving home. Once he was in our care, we were consistent with his meds and vet follow-ups and changed his diet to help with his allergies…It’s worked well. He still has occasional ear flare ups, and will need periodic cleanings from the vet., but he’s definitely feeling better and has a bounce in his step now.  In his prior life, Huey was mistreated and would snarl to avoid being handled or get his desired outcome of being left alone. His instinct was to avoid human touch and affection.... We knew Huey was trapped in this pattern and enlisted the help of Daniel with Lakeside Dog Trainer to work with Huey and help him learn to trust and establish new behaviors. TRAINER UPDATE - 11/15/22 “When Huey started his training back in August, he showed his defensive side towards us. He avoided eye contact and had NO interest in engaging. We worked with him on verbal cues and making eye contact. After a few days, he started to relax and realized he liked having someone else in charge. He started to seek out attention. We’ve been doing structured training with commands to build his trust, and working on basic obedience too. Huey is crate trained, housetrained, has learned to sit and wait for food, and has solid leash skills. He loves to go for walks and LOVES car rides, and does great meeting other dogs and people on leash.  Even after a hard life, Huey has proven he can be part of a pack. He’s still learning to trust his handlers, and enjoys receiving pets and affection on his terms. Picking him up is still not advisable, but we have not pushed that yet. Huey would be great as an only-dog, or with another calm, confident dog and he’s been fostered with cats. We have continuously exposed him to other dogs for short, safe, and positive meetings and he’s learned that humans will advocate for him and has really improved his doggie social skills. He needs a calm home — no kids or loud city noises. Structure will be key to Huey’s success. UPDATE - 2/25/23 Huey transitioned into a foster home in December, living with a retired foster mom who was a special ed teacher, a patient foster dad, and their three other dogs. He had some early hurdles, but his fosters powered through and he’s settled into a groove. We’ve confirmed that he absolutely needs structure and boundaries when he goes to a new home. If you give him too much freedom at once, he will make bad decisions, and really needs an owner who is a leader first, who also listens to his queues.  After two months in his foster home, Huey still has the potential to nip, but his foster family has mostly been able to successfully navigate around it as he typically gives warning...but not every time. He’s not going to be a cuddly lap dog, but he does make a good companion, and wants to be near you. He will follow his foster mom around the house, would love to accompany you on walks or running errands and will alert you to danger.  Huey is a complex pup. He can be a charmer wanting your affection and then get spooked and suddenly growl.  When he wants physical contact with you, he will put his front paws on your knees. If you reach out to touch him and he ducks his head or shows hesitation/resistance, it's best not to push affection. He is fearful of someone trying to pick him up especially when leaning over him. His foster parents give him affection when he requests it, but do not initiate petting. After two months, he’s now choosing to lay next to his foster mom on the couch, vs. the other end…baby steps! PACK: Huey has been living with three dogs and shows no reactivity to the pack when outside, eating, or taking treats. He initiates play with the two smaller dogs who are about his size. He can be reactive/growly (never bites or engages) with the larger dog in his foster home.  He is fine with her at mealtimes and outside, but will react to her inside the home if she gets too close to him when he’s on the couch or bed. One approach is to keep Huey off beds/couches and his trainers did restrict his access, but his foster family is allowing it. They manage their engagement and use a water squirt bottle to stop unwanted behavior…it works pretty well. CRATE: The crate was an importat tool to settle Huey in and they keep it always open and available to him. He no longer sleeps in it overnight. He sleeps on a doggie bed on the floor next to his foster parents bed and has never guarded his doggie bed, or the chairs he is permitted to sit on…so we are seeing progress. The dogs all switch places throughout the day with no problems. MEETING NEW PEOPLE: Surprisingly, Huey is great at meeting new people. The foster family’s 12-year-old granddaughter and son-in law came to visit and Huey was very excited. He jumped up against their legs and invited them to pet him. No snapping or growling…he often acts like this when meeting someone knew…it is perplexing.  FOOD/TREATS:  He shows no signs of food aggression. He eats in the same room with the pack. They are separated around the room, but he does not push and will wait for his turn. He also sits with the pack and waits for his treat, which he takes gently. PETTING:  His foster mom never reaches to touch him without giving him the option to tell me he doesn’t want it by lowering his head or turning away. ( if pressed he will snap or growl)  If you are sitting and he comes over to you, he will lean in to get scratched or petted. He loves to have his ears rubbed, but you should never bend over to pet him, especially if he is laying down. He needs to be the initiator of contact. HOUSE MANNERS: He learned how to use the doggie doors to go out within the first hour he was here. He goes in and out as needed. LOUD NOISES: He fears fireworks and storms. He chose to sit with his foster mom on New Year’s Eve. He was shaking and for the first time wanted to be held. Huey continues to make progress, but does have quirks and needs a special adopter who is ready to work with a more complicated pup. He needs someone who understand his fear issues and allows him to be himself and accepts his love of all things paper.  He is not a cuddly lap dog,  but enjoys being near you. We are looking for an adopter with some leadership skills and patience to settle him in. Huey’s trainer will stay involved during his transition to his new home and be a resource for support as he settles in. Apply today to learn more. Story
PARKER Shih Tzu Mix Male Cream 3 years old 23 pounds Meet Parker - a playful and deserving pup Parker started off being reserved when he met his foster's residential dog and husband. However, over time, he has warmed up to them, showing an ability to build trust. Parker sometimes exhibits a bit of guarding when he's in his crate or with a toy. Identifying triggers for this behavior can be crucial in understanding and managing it effectively. Patience, building trust, and positive training will do wonders for this furry friend. Parker engages in playful activities like tug of war with a residential female dog. Understanding when these interactions are positive may offer insights into his personality and preferences when it comes to playing. Parker loves running around at full speed in the yard, showcasing high energy levels and a playful nature. He is potty trained which indicates a level of training and adaptability. Understanding Parker's past and working with his unique needs, including potential fear or trust issues, will be essential for providing him with a secure and loving home. This cute underbite is very typical of a ShihTzu trait! Please Note: *Must have a FENCED-IN yard!* **No children under 10!** If you are interested in adopting PARKER please go to our website www.somersetcottagepoodlerescue.org to see our adoption process and download the adoption application PARKER's adoption donation is $695 PARKER's adoption donation is $695

Story
I have more videos on the rescue website! My name is Pepper. I weigh 7 lbs. (2/16). I am one in a litter of three. We were born around November 15. We are fostered in Mount Airy, North Carolina but easy, affordable transportation is available. Our mom weighed 7 pounds and our dad weighed 10 pounds. They were both family pets with great dispositions. We all have long bodies and short legs. We are not considered hypoallergenic or non-shedding since we are mixed breed puppies. We are well socialized and very loving. We love being held and petted, and we always greet our foster mom at the door with wagging tails and lots of kisses. We love to play with toys and with each other. We do like to chew on fingers and toes so we definitely need some training in this area. We have a medium energy level. We are working on house training. We sleep in a crate every night and we have learned not to potty in our crate. As soon as our crate door is opened every morning we run straight to the door to go outside and potty. We are good with the other dogs and love to play with them. I am the boldest of the three and the first to try anything new. I love to snooze in my foster’s lap! We provide hours of entertainment to our foster mom just watching us play. We are pretty typical puppies - we eat, sleep, play, and then start all over again. We have so much love to give and we are ready to go to our new forever homes! We will not be adopted in to homes with small children because we are so small. We are up-to-date on our puppy shots and we have been dewormed. We have already had a check up by the veterinarian. Our records will accompany us to our new homes. Email is the best method of contact . Adoption applications can be found on our rescue website Carolinacaninerescuenc.com

Story
Please contact Destiny Sibert (DestinyS@luckydoganimalrescue.org) for more information about this pet.SISSY Come meet Sissy and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (July 21st) from 12-3 pm at the STORE in LOCATION (6100 Arlington Blvd, Falls Church, VA 22044)!   Female Weight: 8.6 lbs Best guess for age: 14 years as of September 2023 Best guess for breed: Shih tzu and Yorkie mix   It can take a lifetime of experience to teach people what the most essential - and best - things in life are. Good food. A comfortable place to rest. Smelling the flowers, savoring the feel of a warm sunbeam. And, above all, being with loved ones.   Or it can take a Sissy.   Sissy is content with the simple pleasures of life. She loves relaxing on her bed and will just enjoy her time there, going to her water bowl when she gets thirsty. She enjoys cuddling sessions. She relishes her rides in a stroller on warm days, sniffing the breeze. When her foster family goes on a road trip, she enjoys the car ride; she is an excellent traveler. When the four dogs in her foster home are playing around her, she likes just being near them. And oh yes, she loves her meals and her treats!   She communicates well with her humans. If she needs something - food, a water bowl refill, to go out for potty - she barks. She will also signal if she needs something during a car ride.    This sweet, calm, laid back girl experiences life with her nose and her heart. She is mostly blind and deaf. Her fosters say she has mapped her areas in their home and has her favorite spot there.    Because she is not able to see or hear when her humans are not around to respond to her barking cues, she would do best in a home where someone is home most of the day. Sissy has so much to offer in exchange. Love. Cuddles. And reminders of what is truly important. Will she be your reminder? Will you be her soft landing?   Gets Along With:   Sissy currently lives with dogs and does well. She hasn't been seen with cats. Because children might not remember to be calm around Sissy, we do not recommend her for a home with kids under the age of 12.    Currently Living at:  DC area foster   Special adoption considerations:  Sissy experiences the world with her nose and her heart. She is mostly blind and deaf. She also has a couple of health conditions but the 15/10 Foundation is generously sponsoring all of Sissy's medical care moving forward. Sissy's future adopter will be able to submit receipts for medical expenses to the 15/10 Foundation for reimbursement.  Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken.  All of our dogs are working on their crate training.  TO ADOPT:      The adoption fee for this dog is $375, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. Name:    Magwai       Best Guess for Breed:    Shi Tzu/Terrier Best Guess for Age: 4 Years as of 6/12/2024   Gender: Female Approximate Weight:    18 pounds as of 6/12/2024 Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven’t seen Magwai with cats or kids, but he can be tested! Currently Living At: South Carolina shelter; Magwai needs a foster or forever home in the DC area to get his freedom ride up here! Special Adoption Considerations: Magwai is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs.  All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care.  After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months.  We are happy to discuss this treatment and which phase of the study this Lucky Dog is in right now! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left! Magwai is Looking For: His forever home! Through no fault of her own, this sweetie now needs a new home. She's in her prime as a young adult dog and eager to have her own humans for long sniffy walks, romps in parks, and all the adventures they can dream up. More than that, though, she's dreaming of being well-loved and under her own roof for all his days.    She has so much to offer - adoring gazes and happy tail wags and loyal companionship. Can you resist that adorable underbite?   What My Foster Says About Me: We will update once Magwai has spent some time in his foster home. Story
About Charlie   Age 2.5years old Weight 16 pounds Energy level Medium Healthy status Healthy  Ideal home Fenced yard with someone home part of the day   Charlie came to us from a local shelter. Charlie is an affectionate Shih Tzu mix who loves toys almost as much as he loves his people. He can entertain himself for quite a while, burying his toys under blankets and pillows, walking around with a toy in his mouth, or lying on his back holding a toy with his paws. He also loves cuddle, lap, and play time with his people and will gaze adoringly into their eyes. He enjoys meeting new people (especially if a treat is involved!), but he will stay at a respectful distance and approach them on his own time.    Charlie is a sturdy boy who weighs around 16 pounds. He enjoys being the center of his guardian's world, so we are asking that he go to a home without to many dogs because we want him to be spoiled!  Charlie does great with no accidents if he is let outside in the backyard every few hours like most dogs. He will go on indoor pee pads if necessary. Charlie prefers not to be left alone for too long, so we are asking for a home with someone home part of the day.
