Story
'Nauti' Girl!MEET VALENCIA!   This little lady’s world was rocked earlier in December when her owner was deported and she found herself scared and alone in the shelter. The outpouring of empathy and support for her and her situation was heartwarming, and she quickly found her way into a very experienced foster home with four other small dogs (some of whom had had similar, stressful backgrounds) and multiple cats. There she has had the time to settle, destress and come to life again. She is now back to what we believe is her true-self; a playful little gal who will roll over for tummy rubs for her (adult) human and play with her toys to entertain herself. Her favorite is stealing a nautical rope ball her foster mom has on a table, thus “Nauti” girl. Ha!   Valencia is bi-lingual having come to Tara’s House familiar with basic commands in Spanish and is picking up their English translations (Sit and Down, for instance). She enjoys hanging out with and playing with her foster-siblings, both canine and feline varieties. She sleeps through the night and has gone into an open crate to rest on her own several times (although she is not crated otherwise.)     Valencia has had some stress in her life and it sometimes manifests in her being fearful of new people (or even people who aren’t her main care-giver). She should not go to a home with children (most small dogs shouldn’t) and would do best in a home that can give her consistency as well as love. We think she would do best with another small dog in the home, as she could use the confidence that a canine relationship can bring and she seems to genuinely like other dogs. She is fearful at times so needs a strong leader that can show her that her human has things under control.   Valencia’s adoption donation fee is $450, which includes spay/neuter, routine vetting and a microchip. You can apply for her by filling out our online application, which is found on our website www.tarashouse.org.  Please email us at info@tarashouse.net with any questions.January 3, 2026, 1:16 pm

Story
This is Tyson, he was given to us by a close friend who moved to California, Tyson is 9 months , at the time we lived in a house so he was much more manageable and free, we recently moved to a condominium and we don't have as much space anymore as well as our whole family is extremely busy and we hardly have time for Tyson:( .we have had him for about 6-7 months and they have been great but have just gotten difficult, he’s also a very playful dog but he is a big dog.he’s also very kind and can be destructive but He is not aggressive at all. unfortunately we can no longer care for him and as the cold approaches we’re afraid we wont be able to take care of Tyson anymore. We are hoping to find a caring and very loving adoptive owner as soon as possible!

Story
Meet Ember! This heartthrob has a goofy smile, the manners of a gentleman, and a heart of gold. This fragile soul spent WEEKS in a crowded shelter after being found wandering alone as a stray. The second he stepped through our door, he completely lit up. Within hours, he was following his foster like a tiny flickering shadow ~ smiling, tail wagging, tongue peeking out when he woke from naps. His foster mom says he's so well-behaved and so happy to finally be included in a family. Ember's ideal home has people who are around most of the time, want to take him on plenty of walks and fun adventures, and love to cuddle. He wants to spend most of his day on the couch with his humans, supervising any kitchen activities, and snacking on all the treats. When Ember wakes up from naps, his little tongue sticks out, like it's been searching for snacks in his sleep. As if that weren't cute enough, one ear tends to flip back in his sleep so he wakes up with lopsided ears to match his lopsided grin. Ember loves going for leash walks (in nice weather only - he's not big on snow and we don't blame him one bit!) and is equally happy to ride along in the car. He is housetrained and generally sleeps through the night. While his vision and hearing aren't perfect, he still bounds up and down stairs and can even jump up onto the couch. He doesn't need a ton of exercise, but he absoutely needs a ton of snuggles! After everything he’s been through, Ember still believes people will choose him. He's so ready to finally have someone to give all of his love to - could it be you? Ember is approximately 12 years old and 16 lbs. Fostered in Germantown, MD Please apply at MirisHaven.org

Story
A mysterious oracle has arrived at Miri’s Haven, and we are still determining whether we rescued a 12-year-old Shih Tzu or accidentally summoned a cursed Furby from 1998 who has come to observe humanity and snack. Furby is a fun, charming, fuzzy doggo. He has been enjoying his time in a foster home, but is hoping to find a forever home for the new year. He has lots of opinions. So far, here's what he's let his foster know about his likes and dislikes: Furby loves snacks (preferably delivered with reverence), gentle strolls (exercise but make it elegant), lap time (where he absorbs your secrets), scritches, and plush beds (plural… he has declared several thrones already). Furby does not enjoy baths, snow, rain, or strong wind (basically, anything where he will be wet or chilly). He does not love clothes, although he does look super handsome in a preppy sweater. Furby also gets anxious on car rides (perhaps because they mostly involve the V E T), but he does better with the help of a little trazadone. Furby arrived with cataracts, glaucoma, and ulcers on his eyes. Following several weeks of unsuccessful treatment, it was determined that Furby would fare better without his peepers (which weren't doing their job anyway). He is adjusting very well and does not let his blindness stop him. He walks with confidence and can handle a couple of small steps, especially going up. If there are multiple or steep steps, he’s happy to be carried up and down them instead. He is a great eater and a champion lap sitter. Furby gets along well with other dogs, big or small, and cats. He loves people and is very curious about the world. He enjoys plenty of grass-sniffing time and checking out every inch of the house for possible stray crumbs. He is housetrained, although if he isn’t taken out after a few polite requests, he may engage in some self-help. He does fine left home alone for reasonable periods of time and is always excited when someone comes to take him out for a potty break. Overall, he is a charming, friendly boy. He has plenty to say about the world and can’t wait to share it with you. Furby is approximately 12 years old and 10 lbs. Fostered in Falls Church, VA Please apply at MirisHaven.org

Story
Meet Ms. Dee! This pretty girl is as sweet and gentle as she is adorable. Ms. Dee arrived quietly with no fanfare, no belongings ~ just 12 years of life etched into a tiny 11-lb body that has clearly seen better days. Ms. Dee was surrendered to a rural Virginia shelter in heartbreaking condition and then made her way to us, hoping someone would finally notice how much she still deserves. Ms. Dee stood patiently while we cleaned her up, clipped away painful mats, soothed scabby skin, and gently cleared the gunk from eyes that had likely been ignored for far too long. She was sweet, gentle, and trusting ~ the kind of dog who breaks your heart because she’s so grateful for the bare minimum. Dee soaked up every moment of pampering and emerged soft, shiny, and very aware of how adorable she is. Since then? She’s claimed a cozy bed as her new kingdom, sniffed the yard alongside her new friends, and is warming up more each day. She’s shy, but she lights up at mealtime (same, girl). Walks are a mystery to her—leash and harness are clearly new concepts—but we’ll take it slow. She’s learning that the world doesn’t have to hurt anymore. We just welcomed spayed female shih tzu 12 years 11 lbs Dee. Fostered in Woodbridge, VA please apply at mirishaven.org
