Meet Darlene! This tiny Shih Tzu girl was found starving to death locked in an abandoned home in DC alongside another dog. Darlene survived, but her friend - the other dog - did not. Fortunately, she made her way to Miri's Haven and is thriving in recovery. Darlene is steadily gaining weight and slowly, tenderly coming out of her shell. Watching her figure out that the world can be kind has been such a sweet thing to witness. Once she realized that she's allowed to want things, Darlene made it clear that she absolutely loves 1) attention and 2) food. If her foster mom is petting one of the other dogs, she will sprint over like the annoying little sibling who must IMMEDIATELY be included. She is pretty much game to do anything along as she's doing it with a person! Darlene is still polishing up her house manners as she settles in and builds routine. She enjoys going for leash walks; she's less of a fan of car rides. She sees and hears well and can go up and down stairs with no problem. She has started learning some tricks, as she is very treat motivated, and loves chasing balls. She especially loves snuffle mats filled with hidden treats - she'll search and sniff with focus and confidence until she's found every last one. She will sometimes try to nosh on things that aren't exactly food (e.g., socks) so it's good to keep an eye on her. Darlene does not like to be alone, which is understandable considering what she has been through. She has started medication to help manage her separation anxiety, and will need a patient forever family committed to helping her work through it. Darlene is hoping to find a home with people who are home a lot, love to snuggle and play with her, and will take her on lots of walks and fun adventures. She'll do best in a home without young children and with at least one other dog to help her continue building her confidence. She thrives with structure and a predictable routine and will do best in a home that's generally calm and quiet. She'd also love to have a fenced in yard to explore! Meet Joe! Joe's story is the classic tale of a puppy bought from a store or a breeder who has found himself separated from the family he once knew. He was surrendered to a shelter in southwest Virginia after life had clearly taken its toll. When we arrived to rescue him, we found a pup with the saddest, most expressive eyes ~ the kind that look straight through you and into your soul. And when we realized those eyes were mostly blind… it just about broke our hearts. But here's the thing - Joe's transformation in our care has been nothing short of miraculous. It’s hard to believe he’s the same quiet, glum little man who arrived with so many skin, eye, and ear issues weighing him down. Once we began ttreating those, his whole spirit came rushing back in. Now he’s an easygoing, occasionally goofy gentleman who still naps like it’s his full-time occupation, but also keeps one drowsy eye on you at all times. If you move, he moves ~ bunny-hopping lightly behind you with that funny little bounce he does, as if he’s made of marshmallow instead of matter. Since being with us, Joe has discovered the joy of toys (selecting them one by one for private playtime), the deep and ancient comfort of being wrapped like a snug little burrito and held, and the absolute delight of going outside, where he becomes inexplicably energized (he'd love a fenced-in yard). Joe is obsessed with doing puzzles to find treats and has also shown an interest in interior design, taking the initiative to relocate his toy basket closer to his bed for better supervision of his subjects. A true renaissance man. Joe has T cell carcinoma but feels great day to day on a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication that may help slow its progression. Based on his diagnosis, we believe his prognosis may allow him approximately 6 to 18 months - and we want them to be the best months of his life. All he needs is a family willing to open their heart and home to him. In return, our rescue is waiving his adoption fee and will cover the cost of his medication and presciption urinary diet for the rest of his life. We want his new family to be able to focus on simply loving him for the time he has left. If your ideal Saturday night involves cozy blankets, a glass of something tasty, and Emily in Paris playing in the background…Joe is your soulmate. Joe is a professional cuddler who believes personal space is a myth. He loves curling up on your chest or lap and will happily snooze there while you binge-watch, scroll, or dramatically react to plot twists. Small guy, big cuddle energy. Joe sleeps through the night, takes his meds and medicated baths without a fuss, and is, despite everything he’s been through, a tender, gentle soul who just wants a person of his very own to cherish him for whatever time he has ahead. Buttercup and her sister and brother, Bubbles and Brodie were surrendered to a kill shelter because their owners just had too many and couldn’t find homes on their own. Their mom is a long-haired Chihuahua and their daddy is a Shih Tzu and they were born on February 2nd this year so they are 8 months old. Buttercup has been spayed, is up-to-date on vaccines and heartworm negative. She’s also microchipped. She weighs just under 7 pounds and is probably full grown now. Buttercup is great at the Vet and The Groomer and loves riding in the car. She needs a little practice on the leash and she’s making great progress on house training. Buttercup is a little bossy but plays great with her brother and sister. we feel like she would be fine with other dogs after getting to know them but would always want to be the boss. She would be fine with older children and we are not sure about cats but the bossy part would be the same at first. Meet the cutest little guy around! He is a compact ball of love and we call him our "Walmart Greeter". Carson's person died a couple of years ago and he is needing a new home. Carson is a happy little guy who loves everyone and gets along great with other dogs. Carson is playful, housebroken, snuggly, likes to play with toys and would love a family to call his own again. This little guy is part Shih Tzu part.... Bassett?? A short, stocky little man for sure. Don't let those little legs fool you though, he likes to run and play with the big dogs.
