Story
Buttercup and her sister and brother, Bubbles and Brodie were surrendered to a kill shelter because their owners just had too many and couldn’t find homes on their own. Their mom is a long-haired Chihuahua and their daddy is a Shih Tzu and they were born on February 2nd this year so they are 8 months old. Buttercup has been spayed, is up-to-date on vaccines and heartworm negative. She’s also microchipped. She weighs just under 7 pounds and is probably full grown now. Buttercup is great at the Vet and The Groomer and loves riding in the car. She needs a little practice on the leash and she’s making great progress on house training. Buttercup is a little bossy but plays great with her brother and sister. we feel like she would be fine with other dogs after getting to know them but would always want to be the boss. She would be fine with older children, and we are not sure about cats but the bossy part would be the same at first. If you would like to give this super affectionate love bug her forever home, please email omlc7@hotmail.com or dogs4mylife@gmail.com. If you do not see a response, please check your spam folder.

Story
Meet Charlie. This gorgeous boy with the striking marbled coat came from a breeder in a small town outside Charlotte, NC. Charlie is a double merle, which occurs when two merle-patterned dogs are bred together and can result in vision loss. Because of his limited sight, the breeder was unable to sell him and listed him on a Facebook rehoming page. Thankfully, one of our local volunteers, Dina, saw the post and stepped in to get Charlie safely into rescue. Charlie has been in Dina’s home for the past two months and is fully integrated into her pack of 5 pups. He’s best paired with a playful dog his size or larger, because this young boy loves to wrestle and play. While he is technically blind, Dina believes he can see shapes and shadows, and his limited vision doesn’t slow him down one bit. It’s the only life he’s ever known, and he fully embraces it. Dina has been amazed by how adaptable Charlie is, both at home and out on walks. Within just a week, he learned to climb her non-carpeted stairs (she still carries him down to be safe!). He navigates the world using his strong sense of smell and hearing and lives life like any other happy, confident dog. He's mostly potty-trained but needs regular breaks and has been exposed to the crate for short periods of time. Dina shared this update: “Charlie is a snuggly pup, and Shih Tzus are very social dogs. He loves to bury his nose near your cheek and sleeps well through the night, cuddling in bed with me. He takes after the Shih Tzu personality more than the poodle. He loves being picked up, too. When you pick him up, he tilts his head back like Stevie Wonder. He’s playful but not overly energetic and loves all kinds of toys, especially ones that make noise when they hit the floor, like squeaks, rattles, or crunchy plastic bottle sounds. That helps him find them quickly. He has moderate energy. He plays with my dog Bentley or enjoys zoomies in an open grassy area. He also keeps himself busy with a Benebone, bully stick, or lick mat, then happily settles on the couch or floor.” Charlie’s ideal home would include a fenced yard for zoomies and another playful canine companion. Like any dog, he’ll need a gradual introduction to a new home—and with limited vision, taking things a bit slower is important. Starting with one safe room and gradually expanding his access helps him learn his surroundings. When introducing other pets, moving slowly and using jingling tags can help Charlie hear them approaching and feel more comfortable initiating interactions. He’s also best walked on a short leash for added guidance and security. Charlie is joyful, fearless, and ready for a home that will  Apply today! Story
Meet Hip Hop – The Sweetest Senior Shih Tzu Around! Hip Hop is a Shih Tzu weighing about 10 lbs, and she’s ready to find her forever family! This little lady has come a long way—from being found roaming the streets and ending up in a crowded shelter, to now living her best life in a loving foster home. When she first arrived, Hip Hop was matted and had some hair loss from a flea allergy, but with a little TLC (and some cozy sweaters), she’s blossomed into the adorable, happy pup she was always meant to be. Hip Hop is the definition of an easygoing companion. She loves lounging around the house and soaking up the comforts of home, but she also enjoys short backyard adventures with her dog friends. She’s been around dogs of all shapes and sizes—from a calm 5-year-old Jack Russell mix to an energetic 8-month-old Great Pyrenees mix—and she gets along with everyone. She’s even polite with cats! Her true love, though, is people. Hip Hop adores being near her humans and will happily follow her chosen person from room to room, just to be part of the action. She’s wonderfully respectful—never underfoot or demanding attention—and she’s especially sweet with kids. In her foster home, she enjoys spending time with her 4- and 10-year-old human foster siblings, often curling up at their feet or patiently waiting for someone to lift her onto the couch for a snuggle. Hip Hop has impeccable manners, is completely potty trained, and is as polite as they come. She’s the perfect companion for anyone looking to share their days with a gentle, loving senior who appreciates the finer things in life—lazy Sunday mornings, quiet companionship, and unconditional love. If you’re looking for a loyal little friend to share your home and heart, come meet Hip Hop. We promise you’ll fall in love, just like we have. Some medical things to note about her due to her senior age:  Has possible early kidney disease based on her SDMA Has mildly elevated liver enzymes May require a kidney-friendly diet long-term Needs annual labs (or twice per year if you prefer proactive care) Is otherwise comfortable, stable, and ready for a loving home Transfer Day: January 24that PetSmart Tysons Corner from 10:00–11:00 AM, an approved adopter must be present to adopt. Pets may be adopted prior to this date with an approved adopter. ##2573718##

Story
'Nauti' Girl!MEET VALENCIA!   This little lady’s world was rocked earlier in December when her owner was deported and she found herself scared and alone in the shelter. The outpouring of empathy and support for her and her situation was heartwarming, and she quickly found her way into a very experienced foster home with four other small dogs (some of whom had had similar, stressful backgrounds) and multiple cats. There she has had the time to settle, destress and come to life again. She is now back to what we believe is her true-self; a playful little gal who will roll over for tummy rubs for her (adult) human and play with her toys to entertain herself. Her favorite is stealing a nautical rope ball her foster mom has on a table, thus “Nauti” girl. Ha!   Valencia is bi-lingual having come to Tara’s House familiar with basic commands in Spanish and is picking up their English translations (Sit and Down, for instance). She enjoys hanging out with and playing with her foster-siblings, both canine and feline varieties. She sleeps through the night and has gone into an open crate to rest on her own several times (although she is not crated otherwise.)     Valencia has had some stress in her life and it sometimes manifests in her being fearful of new people (or even people who aren’t her main care-giver). She should not go to a home with children (most small dogs shouldn’t) and would do best in a home that can give her consistency as well as love. We think she would do best with another small dog in the home, as she could use the confidence that a canine relationship can bring and she seems to genuinely like other dogs. She is fearful at times so needs a strong leader that can show her that her human has things under control.   Valencia’s adoption donation fee is $450, which includes spay/neuter, routine vetting and a microchip. You can apply for her by filling out our online application, which is found on our website www.tarashouse.org.  Please email us at info@tarashouse.net with any questions.January 3, 2026, 1:16 pm
