Story
MEET CROWN! This royal cutie is around 8-10 years old and joined City of Elderly Love after he was brought to Philly's animal control shelter as a stray then timestamped for euthanasia due to his physical condition and veterinary needs. Thankfully, Crown has made a full recovery and has put on some much needed weight. Crown has gone through a lot of changes lately going from fending for himself, to the shelter, to a foster home, but one thing that hasn't changed is his easy-going, magnetic personality! Crown is a petite little pittie, weighing around 40 lbs. with the cutest apple-shaped head. Some of Crown's favorite things include playing with rope toys, lounging outside in the sun, hanging out with his canine foster brothers, eating snacks whenever possible including most veggies, and taking slow walks around the neighborhood! Despite his age, he's pretty mobile and gets around great. He loves to romp around in the yard and stairs are no problem for him. He does have a slight limp, likely due to an old injury and stiffness and would benefit from some joint supplements, but it doesn't hamper his mobility. He'll have about one good zoomie session a day (usually in the morning) then he's happy to just chill out the rest of the day. Crown is housebroken and pretty quiet besides the occasional bark to let you know he needs to go out. He doesn't mind being left alone for longer periods of time. In our opinion, Crown is as perfect as they come but we also wouldn't put it past him to try to stick his head in a stinky trash can and taste test its contents, just something to keep in mind. He also prefers to eat his meals away from the other dogs so that he doesn't have to share. He doesn't show signs of guarding toys from the other dogs but definitely doesn't want to share his meals. Crown is a little too interested in cats so we think he'd do best without them. He can be a little mouthy when taking treats and is still working on taking them more gently which is the only reason we'd recommend him for families with older kids. But otherwise, a little gentleman! Crown caught up on vet care since coming to the rescue and is overall, a healthy guy. He was badly in need of a dental - many of his teeth were worn down and cracked so he's since had a dental cleaning with extractions and is feeling much better these days. Now that he's fully recovered from his days as a stray, Crown is ready to land his kingdom! Crown is available for adoption through City of Elderly Love. He is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Story
MEET NELLIE! Nellie is an 8-10 year old pittie who was seized for cruelty and neglect by Philly's Humane Law Enforcement team, completely emaciate. She spent some time in the shelter before she hitched a ride to City of Elderly Love and never looked back! She's now ready to lay down some roots in a low-key home with a family who can help Nellie's world remain small due to her difficult past. Nellie has the most unique face with wrinkles galore, soulful golden eyes, and pouty lips. She also has some muscle loss in her head but now that she is at a healthy weight, it's less noticeable. Despite looking larger in photos, Nellie is a peanut! She has short little legs, a peanut head, and (now) a nice round belly. Nellie is currently living with another dog but prefers her own space where she can spread out. She tolerates him, but can get overstimulated around him easily and isn't afraid to tell him to beat it if he's being annoying. Because of this, we think she'd be happiest as an only-pet or with another lower-key dog. Nellie loves her crate and you can sometimes find her curled up in it without being prompted. Nellie takes a little time to warm up to new people and can be anxious in new settings (like an unfamiliar car ride or during a vet visit) but settles in wonderfully and will be your very best friend if you offer her a treat. She loves being petted and scratched and will bonk her head into your leg or flip over on her back to let you know she'd like some lovin'. We really don't know anything about Nellie's past before entering the shelter its safe to say she's been through a lot. She doesn't require much - a quieter home where she isn't asked to go on tons of adventures but can get a nice stroll through the neighborhood and a comfy spot to sit in the sun would be a dream come true. Nellie is available for foster or adoption through City of Elderly Love. She is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. Interested in meeting her? Story
MEET DIAMOND! They say diamonds are forever and we think it won't take long for this sweet gal to be forever in your heart. Diamond is a 10-year-old pittie mix who was surrendered to Philly's open admission shelter by her longtime owner who, heartbreakingly, believed it unlikely anyone would want her. Little do they know, she's exactly our type! Diamond was surrendered with a number of mammary tumors and required two surgeries to remove them all. We're happy to report that biopsies showed that her tumors were all benign and she now has a clean bill of health. She has also lost close to 20 lbs of unnecessary weight (now down to around 65lbs.), can move easier, is feeling great, and is shining bright in every way! We like to think that Diamond's personality boils down to the four C's: 1) Companionship: she's a total sweetheart who lives for belly rubs, nose scritches, and human interaction. She's great about meeting new people. She’s adorable, affectionate, and the ideal partner for lazy days, long naps, and casual treat-sharing (her love language is snacks). She’s low-maintenance and emotionally generous, a true Velcro dog who just wants someone to love her back. 2) Communication: she's also not shy about letting you know what she wants, when something’s bothering her or when she needs a little extra love, using her voice, gentle nudges or patiently waiting in relevant locations (while staring at you) to indicate what she wants. 3) Confidence: she arrived at shelter quite overweight, but thanks to her foster family’s help and her own determination (and a lot of motivation by way of vegetables as treats), she’s now strutting confidently toward her summer body and her rightful place on the couch.  4) Control (or lack thereof, occasionally): she appears not to have had much experience with other dogs and can be a bit over-excited when meeting them. We have a feeling she didn't get out of her former home much and sometimes will bark at other dogs on walks. At her age, she might thrive best in a dog-free home where she can soak up all the love for herself. That said, she has happily lived with cats! Diamond can be a little touchy about things she's not used to - such as veterinary handling. She does best with a slow and gentle approach. Diamond isn't currently living with kids but has interacted with them happily. Because she's such a low-key girl, she'd likely do best in a home with older kids. Diamond is living proof that senior dogs still have so much to give. She's getting a second chance at life and looking for a best friend to experience it with! Whether you’re watching TV, enjoying the porch breeze, or sharing snacks at sunset, Diamond is ready to shine right by your side! Diamond has caught up on vet care and is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. Diamond is available for adoption through City of Elderly Love. Interested in adopting her? Visit cityofelderlylove.org to complete an online adoption questionnaire or email us at info@cityofelderlylove.org!
