ABOUT MONTE Meet Monte! He is a 7-year-old bully mix with a big head and even bigger personality! Monte came to HAP after his beloved owner unexpectedly passed away. Understandably, transitioning from a home to the shelter was confusing and stressful for him at first. During his initial weeks, Monte needed time to adjust, but he's since settled in and formed a special bond with our team. These days, Monte lights up when he sees his friends, bouncing with excitement and gently nudging them for scratches. While he’s affectionate and loves attention, Monte is also perfectly content doing his own thing. He enjoys exploring our fenced-in fields, splashing in kiddie pools, and chasing his favorite toys. Bath time? Not a problem for Monte. His favorite part isn't the bubbles, it's the thorough scrub-down and the cozy towel-dry afterward. He’ll even let us drape towels over him like a little king, then lounge around in comfort and style. Monte is a smart, sassy boy who already knows how to sit, give paw, and speak for a treat. And if you're not paying attention? He might "speak" just to remind you he’s there! He’s the perfect mix of independent and affectionate, a loyal companion who loves to coexist with his people and snuggle up when the moment’s right. Monte has also spent some time outside of the shelter with one of our staff members, here's what she had to say about him: "I had my buddy, Monte, for a day out yesterday and he was the best boy! He was great in the car and stood at attention in the backseat the whole drive. He loved sniffing around the back yard and followed me everywhere inside the house. He is not a big PDA guy, but he did give me a couple kisses and loved having his ears and under his chin scratched. We finished off the day with an afternoon nap on my bed. He hopped right up, laid down, And promptly fell asleep! I can’t wait to take him out again" - Kaitlin If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. If you are interested in this specific dog but it ends up not being the best fit upon meeting, our adoption counselors will work with you to help find a match! All household members, including children and other dogs, must come along for the meeting to make sure it's a good fit. If a match is made, we encourage same-day adoptions! Our adoption fees include the animals' spay/neuter, microchip, age-appropriate vaccinations and preventatives, fecal testing, heartworm testing, and a small bag of food to get you started.

Story
Munch was purchased at 8 weeks with two partners who lived in my building. Unfortunately when the partners split he lived with one until they couldn’t support his needs any longer. I have been keeping him for a little over 6 months , he is kind , gentle and loves cuddles. He needs a home bigger than my small apartment where he can grow and be loved.

Story
Meet Gracie Gracie is a big “little” puppy at heart and the ultimate cozy companion. Her favorite place in the world is snuggled under a blanket—but since she can’t burrow under covers herself, she’s looking for a human who’s happy to tuck her in for naps and especially at bedtime. She knows exactly what “bedtime” and “time for bed” mean and will happily follow you to bed, where she sleeps right by your side. Gracie is a gentle clinger in the best way—she’ll follow you from room to room to keep you company while still respecting your space. Her favorite words are “dinner” and “breakfast,” and she comes running when she hears them. She’s also a big fan of bananas (she always gets the last bite!) and cheese—so fair warning, she expects you not to be stingy. She enjoys going for walks but prefers her space from other dogs, so leash walks with distance are best for her. At home, Gracie is wonderfully quiet and low-energy. She doesn’t bark; instead, she may let out a tiny grunt when she’s excited. She’s a true couch potato who sleeps most of the day and is incredibly easy to care for. Gracie is very polite about bathroom time. She won’t bark to alert you—she simply sits quietly by the back door when she needs to go out, so paying attention to her subtle cues is important. After potty breaks, she expects her reward (she’s trained her human well), and she does the cutest little happy dance when she knows a treat is coming. One of Gracie’s most endearing quirks? She “sings” along (adorably whining) when she hears guitar music. It’s impossible not to smile. She is crate-trained and happily goes into her crate when her person leaves—especially since she always gets a treat first. Gracie does best in a large crate where she has plenty of room to stretch out and get comfortable. Gracie is a loving, loyal, and easygoing companion who has been deeply loved and spoiled. Due to a change in her person’s situation, they can no longer care for her, but they hope her next family will continue to spoil her just as much.January 23, 2026, 10:29 am

ADOPTION FEE SPONSORED BY DEDICATED SUPPORTER   Meet Tobias: 70 pounds of pure enthusiasm  Tobias is a 2-year-old big-headed goofball whose brain is mostly made of static, snacks, and love. He may not be winning any academic awards, but what he lacks in brain cells he more than makes up for in affection, wiggles, and wholehearted devotion to his people. This big dumb-dumb is looking for an energetic family who can keep up with his zest for life and doesn’t mind a little chaos mixed with a lot of laughs. Tobias would do best with older kids who can handle his size and enthusiasm—because at 70 pounds, his love sometimes comes at full speed.January 28, 2026, 11:35 am

Story
Meet Khaleesi - Mother of Zoomies, Breaker of Boredom, and Ruler of Hearts. This 2-year-old black-and-white beauty is energetic, friendly, and absolutely convinced that people exist solely to love her (and honestly, she might be right). Khaleesi is the kind of dog who walks into a room like, “Party’s Here!” She’s got youthful pep, a happy wag and zero interest in being a wallflower. If you’re looking for a dog who will keep you laughing, moving, and feeling adored, Khaleesi is ready to take her rightful place on your couch… and in your heart. Adopt Khaleesi and gain a loyal partner who will happily rule your home with snuggles, zoomies, and unconditional love. Long may she reign. February 6, 2026, 9:02 am

Story
ABOUT ZEUS Zeus came to HAP in July after his owner passed away. At 7 years old, adjusting to shelter life after living in a loving home has been difficult for him. Shortly after his arrival, Zeus began experiencing concerning symptoms, including vomiting, loss of appetite, and bloody stool. He was referred to Wilmington Animal Hospital for further evaluation and advanced testing, where an ultrasound revealed a mass on his spleen. Zeus has since undergone a splenectomy, an important surgery that will allow him to live a happier, pain-free life. Following his procedure, Zeus was placed into a loving foster home where he can relax, heal, and recover in a calm, comfortable environment. This peaceful setting is exactly what he needs to regain his strength and emotional well-being after everything he’s been through! Zeus is a laid-back, low-key senior pup who enjoys chewing on bones, soaking up attention, and going for short walks. He is friendly with new people, easily won over by treats, and very affectionate. He enjoys long car rides, showing off his tricks, and melting into his friends for love! Given his age and size, Zeus is a low-maintenance companion who spends most of his day lounging or napping! If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals.
